possible to use samba without unix accounts for each user?
We use samba as a domain controller and file server for small separate network environments. We've currently got samba configured to get posixAccount and sambaAccount information from ldap -- and have nss_ldap configured to feed the same posixaccount objects into the posix user account apis via nsswitch.conf (getpwent etc...). In our environments we seem to regularly run into problems which

Samba 4.10.6-1 Configuration on AIX
Rowland, If you were up for another hint at rid versus ad... I'd like to understand a bit more. With rid, I map the administrator to root only... no mapping of users in AIX. How does Samba figure out that bobw at mydomain.com should use the samba user ID bobwsmb? If I use ad, I would use rfc2307 attributes to address that (I think). It seems more "specific" to use ad, but

Special Characters in smbmount
Can you assist me in determining how to use smbmount using special characters. I have a Windows dir I want to share and its share name is $transfer. I use the $ as a prefix so that it rises to the top of the list and is easily recognizable. Here is the command I have tried for the following directory d:\$transfer; $transfer is a valid share on the D drive: Smbmount //servername/$transfer

Dovecot User Listing Error - getpwent() failed: Invalid Argument
?Reuben, could you try this: service auth-worker { ? executable = /usr/bin/strace -o /tmp/out /usr/libexec/dovecot/auth -w } and send the out file to me? I wasn't able to reproduce your problem with glibc-2.28. Aki On 31.08.2018 21:30, Aki Tuomi wrote: > Ah. I think this might be caused by glibc 2.28. I saw a similar error with the "doveadm purge" command after upgrading my system to that version. glibc-2.28. There was a posting by Michael Marley on 31/08 saying he saw something similar to this problem after upgrading to 2.28 as well with 'doveadm purge'. Questions about Domain Member server
Hi list, I have a couple of questions regarding Samba being a Domain Member of a Samba PDC and BDC. Situation: 3 servers, running Solaris 9 and Samba 3.0.7. The Solaris machines are LDAP clients (getpwent fetches info from LDAP). The Samba domain is called 'ALW'. Machine 1: PDC + LDAP master (PDC1) Machine 2: BDC + LDAP slave (BDC1) Machine 3: Domain Member server (FS1) A

I have no idea why it's returning invalid argument, maybe you need to raise this as issue with glibc? rsync 3.2.7 hangs when --usermap is used and receiver is not a super-user
After upgrading to rsync 3.2.7, the following command hangs forever (using "--usermap" causes the hang; without "--usermap" it doesn't hang): rsync -v -p -e --usermap user:user /etc/services user at remote: It did not hang with rsync 3.2.3. Not sure if it's intended behaviour? The fine manual says that --usermap should be used as a super-user on the receiver, but
