FreeBSD Samba Binary Package
Hi, The Samba URL http://us3.samba.org/samba/ftp/Binary_Packages/ does not seem to have a FreeBSD binary package. I tried a web search but to no avail. I have searched the samba list archives and i could not find any pointers either. Any assistance would be most welcome Thanks in Advance, -- Vivek Varghese Cherian Free as in Freedom <www.gnu.org>

Revisiting slow explorer.exe connections
Hi: I recently encountered a problem reading directories via an XP Pro client shared from a samba server (redhat's rpm samba-2.2.7-5.8.0). File listing was sometimes VERRRY slow. It was not a DNS issue in this case. The symptoms, and my fix is below, but I wanted to ask, is there a way to deal with this from the server? (I dunno- like redirecting port 80 or something). >From the client,

RE: XP Pro timeout; we have a winner - webclient service
Thanks to Jason Balicki for the correct fix to this problem. The 'webclient' service in Windows XP, somehow interferes with access to the Samba server. With the service stopped and disabled, the clients are working again. Wierd interaction between Samba and HTTP?
Hi, O/S: Fedora Core 6 When running samba-3.0.24-1 (downloaded from Samba WWW site), all is well. But when updating Samba via 'yum update' to samba-3.0.24-5.fc6, things get bad. Things are equally bad when I try the next BETA release of Samba. When things don't work, I try to mount a share from Windows, like: net use z: \\<host>\jeff and it fails. When it fails, I

Extremely slow during browsing some directories
hi, I am quite new on using Samba and sorry maybe ask a silly question here. I set up simple Samba server on Fedora3 using the samba rpm package comes with fedora3( version 3.0.10-1.fc3). I use the SHARE security level to make things easier. Everything goes fine so far, except that for some windows user, some times, on browsing some directories, it takes extremely long time to display the

Documentation updates...
Hi all, Just a couple of suggestions for documentation updates. First of all, perhaps you should include the following about Windows XP and slow logons/long delays in opening files: Windows XP and slow network logons/long delays in opening files =============================================================== Windows XP includes a WebDav client that attempts to open shares via HTTP. webDAV (webclient) interferes with XP logons
Very long story short... 1. Samba server on machine running iptables or behind a firewall 2. Client XP domain logins taking 45 seconds or more. 3. The problem: webDAV (webclient) is running on the XP workstations and this mysteriously triggers access to port 80 on the file server, which in turn adds up to long delays. If you are running an HTTP server and it isn't blocked then

Problems w/long file access times (samba2.2.5 & WinXP pro) (fwd)
Hello all, we're currently having problems with Windows XP machines that have *very* long file access times for files that are located on our linux-based samba server (samba 2.2.5 / linux 2.4.18). This happens with all kinds of files, with all kinds of programs, including Office97, text editors, develoment environments, etc. Sometimes - the incidents itself seems to be random and is not

rsync problem with smb/ncpfs filesystem?
I'm trying to rsync a smb filesystem to a novell netware filesystem. Both file systems are mounted on a debian woody system (from root). On both file systems the rsync process has "root" file system rights. But trying to rsync a file with a read only flag like -r-xr-xr-x 1 root root 3441648 Jan 20 1998 WEBCLIENT.EXE to the novell filesystem gives this error: rename

WINS and multiple samba servers one subnet
Hi, I think I am not getting WINS to work correctly in my network. Here is the setup, any advise would be greatly appreciated: 3 Samba servers: 1. IBBFILE (Old samba server 2.2.8) being replaced by GT-IBB. I have moved about 70% of the users already. 2. GT-IBB (New samba server to replace IBBFILE samba-3.0.10-1.4E RHEL) 3. GT-BIOLAB (Samba server for students samba-3.0.10-1.4E RHEL). 4.

Samba and the WinXP WebClient
Hi! We've had horrible performance when opening files from out Samba server with OpenOffice.org on some of our XP machines (not on all, I might add). Also, the general file transfers (copy to/from server) were fast and adequate. Then I had stumbled upon the Samba HOWTO which mentioned turning off this "WebClient" service on WinXP. I'm just rather curious, why does this

Printing vs. iptables
Recently, Windows 2000 SP4 clients have developed a problem when using a network printer connected to a Samba print share. Some applications are OK. But take, well, notepad, for example. Selecting a local printer is normal, but there is a two minute delay (!) in selecting a network printer. Once selected, all is well. All smb operations are frozen until the selection happens. This is
