Browsing between linux boxes
My problem appears to be too simple to be addressed in the documentation,
being a linux-to-linux problem. This is a mixed home lan, but the majority
of file sharing is done between three linux boxes. All three have a public
directory, but the one on box1 is mainly used for file sharing. All of this
worked well with our old Samba 2 setup, but has now gone to pieces. Two of
the boxes are

What happened:

The Security in samba is set to users. and passwords are encrypted. What I

Windows bombarding Samba looking for share that does not exist
I have a strange problem and I'm hoping that somebody on the list
recognizes what it is.
I am running Samba 3.0.23d on a Linux box with 2.6.20.15 kernel.
I am connecting from 5 or 6 Windows XP SP 2 boxes.
A share on the Linux box exists called "Music" (Note the UPPER CASE
"M"). The share is accessible to all users who have smbpasswords on the
Linux box.

printer services
Hi:
I have a question regarding printer support/services. Does Samba
support shared printers directly attached to a Windoz or Linux machine?
(i.e. attached via a parallel port or USB port to either the Samba
machine or one of the Linux or Windoz boxes).
If so, how does one configure Samba and/or the other network machines to
configure the printers to make them reachable to the rest of the

passwd chat for samba->kerberos passwd-sync
Hello!
I tried to run a samba3 server as pdc for windowsXP clients with ldap
backend and kerberos authentication.
I stuck with these two possibilities:
1. Samba is pdc, winxp is domain-member, users are autheticated against
smbpasswords within ldapsam.
If the kerberos password of the korresponding principal has the same
password, the users get a ticket from the kdc after windows logon.
But I

regexpr and portability issue
Dear all--
I am still forging my first arms with R and I am fighting with regexpr() as
well as portability between unix and windoz. I need to extract barcodes from
filenames (which are located between a double and single underscore) as well
as the directory where the filename is residing. Here is the solution I came
to:

Lotus Notes 4.6.4 doesn't load, RH 7.1
Hello all.
I am new to this list and Linux in general. I am
working my way out from under the dependancies of MS;
however, I still need to use some windoz products at
the office. On RH 7.1, I have Wine installed (thank
you Codeweavers and other good Wine folks) and have
gotten most of the windoz apps to work. The only one
I am having problems with is Lotus Notes. It starts

write permissions - chapter 2
hello all,
I have been trying to run MS Windows and Excel under wine. They are
about the only two remaining dependent Windoz apps
The error they produce relates to write permissions. However that does
not seem to be the root issue. Other apps, such as Notepad, seem to be
able to write without issue.
What is currently required in way of wine config to satisfy Word and Excel?

Local mount of Win shares.
Hi,
I have Samba server working just great.
Is there a way I can work the other way around, I mean - can I mount Win shares in the Linux?
Something like, making /shares/whatever see the files on //WinMachine/sharename?
This could be good for backing up the files from the Windoz with the Linux box.

Can I find the datetime an object was last assigned to/saved?
I'm using v 1.9.1 under Windoz XP.
Can I do the equivalent of "ls -l" on my R objects? R's "ls()" lists
only the names.
Thanks!

is it safe to replace every "<-" by "=" in R code?
hi;
When I first started looking at R code, I thought that the <- notation for
assignment made the code less readable (and I still do). Then I found that
now one can use "=" in place of "<-" for assignment (I understand this
started since version 1.4). Anyway, I think using "=" makes the code much
more readable.
I was wondering, would it be safe if I

Hi there,
first of all I want to thank everybody who gave me good advise so far ;-).
Now it's the first time I can give advise, and I'm quite glad that I can
start giving insted of only taking now :-) !
Hi Petr,
Yes, I have solved my general problems as follows:
First of all you have to check your firewall settings, because that was the
major problem on my system. On RH 7.2 the
