Understanding Samba 4's features and goals
Hi folks, I'm the co-author of "Windows and Linux Integration," a recent Sybex/Wiley title. So I'm very much interested in what's coming next in the Samba world. And I've been watching the Samba 4 'technology releases" with interest. One nifty feature that I like a lot: the old options that specified many confusing types of server behavior have been replaced

frustrations with shares
I dont know much about Solaris, but i found this. There are problems with ACL's across platforms: the uid has to match numerically the gid has to match numerically the NSF mount has to support the ACL operations, e.g., if the ACL grants write, but the remote file system is read-only then the ACL can not be honored. Its running samba 4.2 in WORKGROUP mode (I can find everything for domain but I am not ready for that). Its running on freebsd on the latest nas4free build NAS with a ZFS file system.. KDE frustrations, now
So I d/l gqview from where I found the rpm, and installed it. It didn't show in my kde menu, so I did something *really* dumb: I ran the kde menu updater. Now I can't lock my screen. Nothing at all happens. Nothing shows in .xsession-errors, nothing shows in /var/log/messages. I restored all of .kde/share from last night's backup... and the screensaver still doesn't go, and

printer frustrations
I've got an old HP LaserJet 1018. It's a winprinter. After I bought a new router (to go inside the Verison one), I plugged it directly into my box (ok, via a hub). I run CentOS 6. Before we went on the trip, I could print, I upgraded my system, and this is the first time I'm trying to print... and no joy. I've tried sending the firmware to it via lp -o raw ... -h :9100, and

[PATCH] Fix mkinitrd detection of LVM root on RHEL 4
RHEL 4's mkinitrd will fail to recognise that root is on LVM when running on a recent kernel/udev due to changes in naming. This patch detects LVM root for RHEL 4, and uses a dirty hack to frig mkinitrd if required. Channel Bank Frustrations
I'm trying to get a Carrier Access Corp. Channel Bank I working with a Digium T100P without success. What is stranger is that the status lights on the channel bank and T100P seem to change almost each time I power cycle the channel bank or reset the T100P. The channel bank has three status lights: T1, Framing, Status. T1 is green, Status is yellow, and Framing is usually red but sometime

Safari 4 Plays Theora/Vorbis
FYI: After hearing about Safari 4's support for HTML 5, I played around with it and found that it will play Theora/Vorbis in the browser using the VIDEO tag. (If the QuickTime component is installed.)

Can't change password change dates with PDBEDIT
I'm setting up a Samba server using CentOS 4's (RedHat Enterprise Linux) standard version (v.3.0101411). I want to be able to force users to change their password upon first logging in and to have to change them after a certain period of time (per user, not system-wide). The problem is that the pdbedit commands don't seem to be registering at all in the database. If I enter the

number detection problem.
Hello, We're using asterisk with a z-plex 10 and a Zap tormentia card at a non-profit home for the aged. Sometimes when we dial out, our numbers are misintepreted with one number being detected twice. For instance 337-4411 becomes 337-7441 7's 4's and 0's seem to be particularly prone to this issue. Any ideas? I've tried turning down rxgain and txgain. A little debugging

Sieve Frustrations
I'm soooo close, but this last little thing is eluding me... I have the following Sieve rule in my global sieve rule: require ["fileinto"]; # Move spam to spam folder if header :contains "X-Spam-Flag" "YES" { fileinto "Junk"; stop; } This isn't firing. The .Junk folder exists under the user directories, but messages that have the
