Write/Modify issues
I'm having problems with one share. It's mounting a directory on an
isilon over NFS. I've re-created the setup on the same machine where
the data is and that works fine, it's just the existing share gives
trouble.
I can create a file, but not rename and sometimes not delete. Also
saving file from say photoshop result in two empty files being created
one with the proper filename

CPU consumption by samba
Hi,
I'm having strange performance problems with samba and an application written
with VisualFox Pro.
This application is entirely installed in a Windows share and it has a hystory
of strange phenomenons.
Initially it ran fast on an old NT server (but that server has been replaced).
It has strange performance problems with Windows 2000 Server: it runs fast
with some servers and slow with

Here's my setup:
Caldera Open Linux Lite (kernel 2.0.29)
Samba 2.0.4a

and numerous Windows NT 4.0 Workstations)
I can see my Linux box in Network Neighborhood on my Windows NT boxes. I
can open the Linux box and see the top level shares available. When I
try to open a share I see one or two anonymous folders.

exporting an FUSE base file system to windows
Hi,
What I wanted to do was to export an FUSE based filesystem mounted
on linux to a windows box using samba.
I can browse and navigate the fuse filesystem without problems
on the linux box. With smbd running I can even navigate the filesystem
using smbclient.
Unfortunately when I try to access the exported file system from WinNT
the mountpoint of the filesystem shows up as a zero size file

large file pre-allocation causing Windows error
I'm trying to copy a 400 MB file from a Windows 98 host
to a FreeBSD 4.5 Samba server providing access to a FAT32
filesystem. I've got "strict allocate = no", but from
what I can see with debug set to 10, it is doing a
ftruncate which takes about 50 seconds to complete.
It appears that Windows gets impatient and generates
an error (while Samba is still waiting for the

smbcontrol xxxx reload-config doesn't work and other details samba 3.2
Hi Samba team.
I installed on a new server samba 3.2.0.
And all work fine, except the reload-config command and other things.
For resolve some missed-configuration, I modify the smb.conf and call
smbcontrol <smbd_pid> reload-config, but it's not work.
Ex :
I added mdfs root = yes (same as samba 3.0.x), after I called smbcontrol
xxxx reload-config

3.5.9: logon scripts are not working under non root user
I have issues running logon script on samba 3.5.9 (freebsd 8.2p1) under non
root user.
When i login to the XP box under root all is OK. logon script is working,
but it's totally not working under all other users.
turning on debugging reveals that under non root it's incorrectly parsing
the logon script name from config (adding full network path to filename)

Unable to reset file permissions
Question regarding file permissions on Samba 3.0.22:
Using a Windows XP client when I attempt to change the file permissions
of a directory (or any single file for that matter) once I click the
'OK' button the properties window closes as expected, but upon opening
the security permissions tab again I notice the permissions have
revented back to how they were beforehand. If I click

Existing files don't show up in share, new files do
I am suddenly no longer able to see any existing files on one of my
shares, from my Windows clients.
I have a Linux server (Fedora Core 8) which used to be my firewall and
router as well as file and print server. There are two Samba shares on
it I have mounted on various Windows clients: my home directory and a
multimedia directory with my music and videos, etc. I mount the former

Possible Bug: Can't copy from Mac OS X to Samba Version 3.0.2a-Debian?
So I'm trying to copy a file called "Stuffit Standard 8.0.2 X
Installer.dmg" from my Panther workstation to a Debian i386 server,
running Samba 3.0.2a as packaged under Debian.
There's plenty of disk space left, I'm looking at a folder full of
files with long names, some containing spaces. When I drag the file

File browser doesn't remember last directory over Dfs
Hi,
I have encountered some strange behaviour after upgrading to
3.0.12 on FreeBSD 4.10 file servers.
Normally when users on windows apps use the file browser to select
a file it remembers the selected directory between invocations, so
that, for example, they can easily read in multiple files from
the same directory, or if they click on Save As... it takes
them to the directory where they

Single File Delete/Directory Listing on Windows ME
Hi;
I'm having a really odd problem with some Windows ME stations connected to a
Samba server. From a command prompt on the ME stations, I do the following:
dir *.*
This works as expected, all the files in the directory are displayed. I
then do:
dir test.txt
And I get:
General failure reading drive G
Abort, Retry, Fail.
The directory contains the file, and the file shows up in a full

Changing Windows passwords
Hi all,
Is there a way to use the "encrypt passwords" and the "passwd chat" programs
simultaneously? smb.conf(5) doesn't mention anything about them being
mutually exclusive, yet when I run testparm on the smb.conf file, I get:
ERROR: the 'passwd chat' script [...] expects to use the old

strange DOS-Error 58
Hi,
based on Bart Lagerweij's ( www.nu2.nu ) bootdisk, I've created a small
DOS system that users can start by booting from network ( PXE ). The
system is configured to map a network drive from a Suse 9.0 Pro / Samba
server with various tools on it. The connection is anonymous.
Until recently everything worked fine but suddenly there are strange
errors:

I'm having a problem with files locking so that every time the are
opened up they are opened as Read-Only. Windows doesn't see them as
readonly but Samba thinks that they are write=no and so they can't be
saved or deleted.
I've included a log, my smb.conf, and a getfacl of a user's home
directory as well as a getfacl of the directory from /home. Any help

I really appreciate all your responses on this.
I might not have fixed it by looking at samba logs but i noticed there was
directory in user unix directory with wildcard * as folder name
once i removed it, samba showed up all the files and directory.
am not sure what would * as folder name caused this behaviour
may be samba was trying to interpret * as something else not sure......
