Standardized Benchmarking?
Hello all,
I'm creating a site where people can share their benchmarks. If you are
interested, the site is at (I just started on it so it has the stock
graphics and color scheme still):
www.dcsnow.com/mambo
I would like some thoughts on what would be a good way to standardize the
testing so the results are more comparable. Is Bonnie+ a good program for
hard drive speed testing? Is there

Samba Client with Windows XP share slow performance
I'm getting awful performance when trying to write to our new NAS and/or a
Windows XP share. In short, I'm getting just under 1/2 the speed that I
can get if I mount a Linux share on the Windows box and send the files
that way. Here are the test results:
>From XP to Linux via FTP 47MB/sec
>From XP to Linux via SAMBA 40MB/sec
>From Linux to XP via CIFS 21MB/sec

Am I getting the best performance?
Okay, I've been chasing performance for a while now. I have no idea if I
should be trying to get better performance or if I'm getting all I can out
of my hardware. Here is the information:

/dev/hdd:
ATA device, with non-removable media

Horrendously slow transfer speeds in FC3 is drivingmecrazy!!! Please help... - SOLVED!
Thanks for the tip but recompiling the latest version was the second thing I
did after trying and failing to tweak the smb.conf on my original hardware
conf. I found that compiling it for my specific architecture (i686)
increased my performance by 100% (from a punny 0.8 MB/s to a better but
still punny 1.6 MB/s).

Hlp with server load
I have a system that is running into problems with high load, however,
even when I shut down everything that could be loading the system, the
load continues to rise. I can't see anything that is causing the load.
Any ideas?

/dev/sd and /dev/mapper
I've done a little research, and can't really find out why it happens,
but on one server I have built, I get the old fashion /dev/sda1,
/dev/sda2 type partitions and on another server I get the /dev/mapper
style partitions. Both machines are hardware raided (before the install)
and both machines are Centos 5.5 64 bit, using the same set of CDs to
install from.
Can someone please

Hello,
I've been using ext3 on some of my production servers, I am now
having some serious issues. I'm not sure where to pin point this
to.

no problem. setup as RAID 1.
2. I have success using this with a standalone at all levels

strange problems
Hi all,
I am having some strange problems with samba on one of my fileservers.
I am using samba 2.2.1a compiled with qouta support and the quota patches.
Kernel is 2.4.9 with quota patches.
Everything seems to work fine exept some very wired things:
If I try to save a document from word 2000 to a samba share the file can't
be read afterwards by word.
The file is on the server I can copy the

Any ideas on the following? (CVS 10/01/2003)
Only reference I could find was a Zaptel change log update...

every time you load the driver
and an email refering this to serial console usage.
Something I should worry about?

User's smbd processes don't get killed
Hi, all.
Last saturday, we've done a cutover for Samba 2.0.5a to be our new
fileserver. All is going well, except for two network users that make me
reboot the server.
What happens is as follows:
* user logs on onto samba server;
* user opens and closes files, etc, OK until in one of these
operations his/her machine hangs;
* user reboots his/her machine to log on again. In this

Ext3 destroying ownerships and permissions
Hi!
A few weeks ago we upgraded 9 large webservers from ext2 to ext3. Since then we've seen very strange behavior on several of the machines. Permissions of files are repeatedly changed at random occasions. Several times, ownership of files have been totally mangled. Several users have logged in to discover that all their files suddenly are owned by another user! At two of these occasions

Can anyone shed some light on this subject? I don't have a clue where to
begin looking. It's RHL 6.0, Samba 2.0.3, stock kernel.

days my Samba Server freeze the whole Server.
First the clients get connection problems, timing out to access the shares
and then some minutes later the whole Server freeze, i can't even logon on
the console. Only a cold reset is possible.
I convert all files from latin-1 to a UTF-8 and then from UTF-8 to

High system in %system load .
Hello
Got strange problem with high system "%system load" and very slow user level
programs (apache+php+mysql) behavior
gstat shows 1.5-4% hard disk busy load but system shows about 20-30% load
while user load is max 5%.
vmstat shows from 2 to 35 process in "b" state.
Now use 7.0-RELEASE-p5 , but the same problem was with 7.0-RELEASE.
And have no idea what to do with this.

64kbps, 44.1KHz, VBR.
The <encode> </encode> is the same for both configurations and here it is:

Serial ATA hardware raid.
Hi everyone,
I'm looking into setting up a SATA hardware raid, probably 5 to use with
CentOS 4. I chose hardware raid over software mostly because I like the
fact that the raid is transparent to the OS.
Does anyone know of any SATA controllers that are well tested for this
sort of usage?
From what I can tell from googling, this is more or less where RHEL stands:
Red Hat Enterprise Linux
