SAMBA netbois lookup issues
Hi all! I am from the Windows world and am trying to migrate to Linux and have done a fairly good job so far. My recent challenge is that I have built a Samba file/print server that works very well on my internal network but when I VPN into the network remotely I am unable to access the server via it's server name. What is driving me crazy is the fact that the last of my Windows

Netbios name resolution with DHCP
I have a network with RH7.2 (netbois name "server"), Mandrake 8.1 ("Linuxbox"), Smoothwall ("Smoothwall"), WinNT ("di-bosco"), Win 98 ("robertw" & "Nicole") x 2 and Win 2k ("DiBosco2k"). Smoothwall is the DHCP server. Why would it be that all the Windows machines can ping to a netbios name, eg ping server, ping Linuxbox

subnet browsing crappy solution!
Trying all the stupid methods to solve the issue of Win2k hosts from different subnets that can't be seen in the NetworkNeighbourhood when server is Samba on Linux (including reading the F***ing manuals and not finding anything useful or browsing through the source of samba until my eyes fall in my mouth) I have decided that they were, well... ,stupid and chose to try crappy solutions! Can't join linux machine to linux pdc controlled domain.
Getting error message: Error connecting to my_pdc Unable to join domain my_domain when I run 'smbpasswd -j my_domain -r my_pdc' from linux_box my_pdc is the primary domain controller for my_domain. I have three win2k machines that are all using the pdc for domain authentication. They all work fine (funny enough) and can access the domain. I have added linux_box$ to /etc/passwd on

Hi All, For many years I have had an OS/2 box peer to peer Netbois over TCP/IP connecting to either stand alone WIN98 or Dual boot with OS/2. Now I've moved the laptops over to Linux. I installed Linspire which is supposed to support Samba. Being new to Samba I have no idea what to to put in the .conf file - on Linspire there's 5 of these files. All I have changed is the workgroup

new samba install
we have been trying to move our samba box to a faster server, with better NICs, faster processor and more memory. both the old and new server are using samba 3.0.14A both on debian based distributions (old was sarge, new is breezy) here are the steps we followed: install samba from the apt archives. confermed that they were the same version. copied smb.conf from old server to new server. changed
