samba + pptp
Hi guys, I have samba domain controller running at a client. It's a fairly simple and straightforward setup, uses smbpasswd for auth, nothing fancy. The client wants to be able to vpn in and access their files. I setup pptp, and use the built in WindowsXP client. After establishing the vpn connection, I can access the domain controller. I get asked for my username and pass - type in

Windows update
Hi! How do you guys solve windows security updates? Is there a way to force windows computers to be updated. Even more flexible is if one can update windows through login script. what's the best filesystem
Curious what folks think the best choice of filesystem is, specifically when used for Samba and regular Unix users (SMB+NFS access). I'm using Reiser now but its slow and doesn't work good XP attributes. I've also used XFS (a couple of years ago) and liked it but had some troubles with cross-platform Unix and the extended ACLs. What's the preference today? Thanks -- Eric A.

SUSE 9.1 Samba 3.0.9 Wn 98 I am having an issue with windows 98 and a samba printer. I am able to get to all the shares on the server and the printers from other clients (win 2K / XP) and am able to get to all the shares fine via win98. samba 3 + DNS(SRV records) + Active Directory Clients
Hai , I am new to samba. I have configured samba 3 as PDC and when I add win2k client into my DC, the client says 'unable to find 'mydomain' name , may be due to DNS Issue. I have also configured bind as dns server and I have the forward & reverse records for 'mydomain'. I read that I need to add some SRV records for active directory clients(win2k/winxp). But I

10 Gigabit Ethernet and Samba
Do anyone have any experience using 10 Gigabit Ethernet connections with Samba? Specifically, if you have had such an experience, can you share what sorts of optimizations you made to get the maximum data transfer between server and workstation? I am just experimenting with this kind of setup myself and I see a huge GULF between the raw TCP/IP transfers that I can make between two

cached credentials local login -- notebook domain members
Hallo, I wonder if cached credentials local logins are expected to work with samba. I have users with notebooks that I want to be domain members. If the notebook is in the wild I want the users to use their profiles (either local or roaming) stored on the notebooks. But once disconnected from the network the users can't login. I found a thread:

Excel files Locking up problem
Hi, My samba is 3.0.13 version. I got a funny problem. UserA logs on to a shared (all users can read/write/execute rights) drive and opens an excel file. UserA closes the file or modifies it. When UserA reopens the file in 5 secs or less, the file seems to be lock by the computer that UserA is on! When UserA had closed the file, UserB on another computer tries to open the file and it says

Ghost logons / Recycle Bin Options (related)
Hi all. Long time no write :) Have been looking at recycle bin options using the VFS options. Everything works fine, but I have one question/snag. We use a script that uses smbclient to send a message to a machine to warn them they are low on space. So the user thinks "oh dear" and deletes stuff. Problem is on the quota system its still counted as part of their user space... Is there

Samba as a domain controller for Linux workstations?
I was wondering, if it's possible to set up Samba as a sort of a domain controller for Linux workstations? I'm thinking of benefits like roaming profiles, managing printers etc. Or perhaps for Linux there are better choices than Samba, when it comes to the office / school use (many users, many classrooms, many workstations etc.)? -- Tomek http://wpkg.org
