Samba 3 Beta3 using LDAP and NT4 Migrate
Hi,
I am trying a test of migrating a NT4 Domain to Samba 3 Beta 3 configured to
use LDAP on Redhat 8. Is this possible?
Details
-------
I previously had Beta 2 on LDAP running as it's own domain controller
without problem and could create users (in LDAP) with smbpasswd -a. XP
clients could join and login OK.
Now I have flushed that setup and have loaded Beta 3 configured to use LDAP,

Understanding Documentation about BDC in HowTo Collection
hi list&john,
i read in the documention about BDCs:
The domain SID has to be the same on the PDC and the BDC. In Samba
versions pre-2.2.5, the domain SID was stored in the file
|private/MACHINE.SID|. For all versions of Samba released since 2.2.5
the domain SID is stored in the file |private/secrets.tdb|. This file is
unique to each server and cannot be copied from a PDC to a BDC; the BDC

LDAP/Samba issues when replacing server
I hope that someone can let me know what I have done wrong.
I need to replace and existing server (server1) with a new server (server2). Server1 is currently running LDAP/Samba (3.0.14). Profiles stored in /opt/samba/profiles
I installed all of the pieces, and LDAP works (mostly, I have an issue, see below)
I ran net getlocalsid DOMAINNAME on server1
used the SID value in net setlocalsid

OS : Suse 9.2 up to date with Samba 3 and openldap
Goal :I want to migrate from Windows NT to samba 3.
WINPDC : name of the Windows NT PDC
LINBDC : name of the Linux BDC
WINNTDOMAIN : name of the domain on WINPDC
I set up smb.conf to act as a BDC, openldap is running well with a
structure ready (I used smbldap-populate from smbldaptools)
I used "net setlocalsid" to set my LINBDC SID

RE: samba Digest, Vol 42, Issue 6
Hi Scott,
Good to see 64bit, I would suggest doing something like this as follows>
logon to a BDC that is currently accepting domain logons and is replicating
the database from the PDC.
as root > slapcat-v -l ldiif-transfer.txt ; to dump the database.
root > scp ldif-transfer.txt root@RHE4BDC:/dir
root > net getlocalsid | cat sidtransfer.txt # vi and check the file for sid

How can I change the localSID for a SAMBA Server?
I am trying to change the localSID for a SAMBA server, however I am unable
to. I have tried the command "net setlocalsid" to no avail. To troubleshoot
I have also stopped the smbd and nmbd services, but this did not help. Any
help would be great!

Domain SID issue
Hello
I have a client who historical had a machinename with an underscore
in it : samba_machine
I had to get rid of the underscore names and changed the name
to samba-machine. At the same time I upgraded to samba-3.0.11 to
get a printer queue problem resolved.
Now it seems the Domain SID has changed, so I changed the new SID
back to the old one with net setlocalsid, because on all machines I had

What's wrong with WARLOCK?
Just kidding. If you don't like it, change it, but do expect problems.
It's not something you will find a recipee for in a How-to book.
The SETLOCALSID changes only the LOCAL SID, not the
GLOBAL SID, for which we would probably need SETGLOBALSID.
When I faced the same problem, I did something really wrong
but it worked. I copy-pasted the LOCAL SID to the

Changing domain name
Hi,
For reasons best known to the IT admin before myself, we currently
have a domain name of WARLOCK. I want to change this. We have about
15 WinXP Pro client machines on the domain as well as a few linux
domain clients.
A bit of reading shows that it should be as simple as doing a net
getlocalsid, making the change, followed by a net setlocalsid.
I started doing this when I noticed something

Seamless update from Samba 2 to Samba 3 on a new server
Hi,
I'm new to the list, I hope i'm posting at the right place ;)
I'm having a hard time trying to update and to move my Samba 2.2 PDC to a
new Debian server.
Currently, the PDC is using Samba 2.2.8 on a Solaris Server. My goal is to
move it to another computer, and to update it to a
newer version (3.0.24)
This must be fully transparent for the users, since I have no time to

"net setlocalsid" question
Hi,
I'm a tad confused about something. I've got a production instance of Samba
running. I am trying to get a test version running on the same box, with the
same SID. Without the test server running, I used "net setlocalSID
<oldsid>" (the net binary is the one for the new server). Then when I issued
'net getlocalsid' it returned it. I thought I was fine.

PDC from 2 to 3, SID headaches
Hello,
I'm doing a migration of a PDC from Samba 2.2.8a on Mandrake Linux 9.0 to
Samba 3.0.6 on Debian Woody (stable), both on the same machine, different
partitions, they do not run simultaneously. And I really need help. :-/
I could not find a detailed guide, so after having a look at the migration
chapter of the official howto, I adapted my smb.conf keeping the same host

a little problem with net getlocalsid
My samba PDC is working very well. I only have an 'theoretical' question
(I think). When I run 'net getlocalsid my-pdc', it fails (see below). I
think this is because someday the name of my pdc was other! In fact 'net
getlocalsid my-old-pdc-name' works! and that output is the same output
obtained from running 'net getlocalsid my-domain' (as written on the

Two differents sambaSID ! Very strange !

I've configured the SambaSID of my domain manualy with "net setlocalsid

I've done a check with "net getlocalsid" and everything seems to be ok,
but when I add a new user with smbpasswd, his sambaSID doesn't
correspond to the Domain SambaSID ! And in the LDAP directory, the
sambaSID of the sambaDomain ObjectClass doens't correspond to the
