Migration from NT4 to W2K3 AD
Are there any gotcha's.....
I am currently using winbindd and very successfully integrating my Samba
boxes with the NT4 domain structure. The admin who is doing the migration
(A corporate person not used to Linux at all) is already nervous about the
migration since it involves Linux.
Usernames are not supposed to change..but, the authentication domain is
going to be a completely new

Removing Samba+LDAP, replacing W2k3+AD
Four years ago, I migrated our network from Windows NT based servers to
Linux, Samba+LDAP based setups. This setup has worked fine. Last year,
we replaced our Exchange 5.5 server - the last "real" Windows server -
with Scalix. This last decision has come back to bite me.
Several new "thingys" that the boss wants, among other things, are
forcing me to implement Exchange

HOW TO: Migrating users' locally-stored profiles from one domain or workgroup to a new domain
Migrating Users Profiles When Changing Domain Affiliation: A Primer
I. Introduction
NOTE: This applies to Windows NT-based systems with locally-stored user
profiles. Windows 9x and Me do not manage user profiles in the same way.
Quite often we find the need to change a workstation's affiliation,
either from a workgroup (that is, the workstation is not in a domain
environment) to a domain,

Replace SBS2003 with Samba4
Hello all,
I'm currently investigating the option to completely replace a SBS2003 DC
with a Samba4 DC. My research (mostly on samba.org guides) shows that it is
feasible, however I'd like to get feedback from the community on my goals.
Current status:
A Windows SBS 2003 is the PDC and a W2008 R2 server is acting as secondary
DC. Domain operational level is 2003.
There are ~40-50

Migrating from NT4 PDC to Windows 2003 ADS; Samba as member server
Here's the situation. We've got an old NT4 domain (not a Samba domain in
NT 4 mode) which we'll call CRUSTY. There is of course an NT4 PDC and
several NT4 BDCs. We have some Linux/Samba file servers (Samba 3.0.1)
that are member servers (security = domain) of the NT4 domain. We also
have several NT4 BDCs and about 200 workstations of varying vintage
(2000, XP) in several

Migrating user accounts Samba 3.5.3 to Windows 2003 (2008)
Hi all,
I need some help with the following problem:
I need to migrate a bunch of user accounts to another domain on a Windows 2003
server (eventually to 2008R2, but that step seemed to big to do in one go).
To keep all access rights etc. correct, I need to get the SID history set
correctly as well.
From what I've researched so far, I'm aware of

Migrating from 2.2.8 to AD 2008R2
Hi,
We have an old samba server, 2.2.8a, running on freebsd 4.9, as a PDC.
There's currently a temporary, standalone mode, win2008r2 with an (mssql)
app that for full utility requires running on a ADC. I have very little
experience with AD. An older version of mssql and the app were running on a
standalone win2k server, which is still available if needed.
I've found various

Domain member, security = ADS|domain and trusts with NT4
I presently have a Samba server (3.0.21b) set up as a member server in
an NT4 domain (with a real Windows NT4 PDC). We are migrating to an
Active Directory domain (with a real Windows 2003 domain controller).
We have set up a two-way trust between the old NT4 domain "CLUNKY" and
the new ADS domain "SLEEK" (aka sleek.local). The Samba server is a
member of the CLUNKY domain

Browsing with duplicate names in multiple workgroups/subnets and multihome machines
You can see by the subject I've got an ugly problem. Even though I don't
have a Samba server anywhere near the network in question, nobody
understands browsing as well as the folks on the Samba team. :-)
Here's the situation: I've got two workgroups, FLINTSTONE and RUBBLE
which are on physically separate networks. FLINTSTONE has a Windows 2003
Active Directory domain

Sharing AD domain info with 2 SBS2003 servers
When I took over as the IT guy in September, there were 2 separate
locations with different domains each managed by a SBS 2003 machine.
The connection between them was an OpenVPN tunnel. The network was
fine and one could see 2 domains in the network.
Local and Local2 are working names. From a workstation on Local one
could see Local2 in the Microsoft Windows Network, and vice versa from

Samba "hijack" the connection?
Dear all,
I have 2 domains: JUPITER.COM (Samba 3.0.23c - Centos5) and WIN.COM (Windows
2000 Adv Srv). I join a windows XP SP1 (MOON), first to Windows domain and
then to Samba's.
The problem is when I join the XP to Samba's and then try to logon to WIN.COM,
the XP is instead logon to Samba, thus the username is not found. The DNS is
not a problem, I set the DNS of the XP to

Eventually transitioning to Windows Server 2016
Hi,
I am preparing to get our Data Center from a Samba 3.5 NT4 domain to AD.
All users, file ownerships, etc. have to remain of course. I am planning to
use Samba 4.7.x, but I was wondering if it is possible to eventually
transition to Windows Server 2016 as the only DC hosts.
The way I understand it is that this is not possible right now, because
Samba doesn't support that schema version

BUG? 'valid users' doesn't allow groups from trusted domains
It appears that you cannot include groups from trusted domains in the
'valid users =' directive on a share.
Here is the scenario as I experienced it (names have been changed to
protect the innocent):
Configuration:
- Samba 3.0.21b as a member server in a real NT4 domain (security =
domain) called 'NTDOMAIN'
- NTDOMAIN has a two-way trust with Windows 2003 Active Directory

Any docs to convert samba server to Win2003 server?
Yeah I know. Not a good question to ask on a samba newsgroup.
Unfortunately for this client, the software they use requires a Windows
server. Since the box is less than a year old, they do not want to
purchase a second server for two applications. So, I am left with the
task of converting the linux/samba server to WinBloze 2003 Server. There
are only 10 workstations so if I have to unjoin
