Best Distro for my dream Xen setup
My requirements: A distro that''s relatively modern (e.g. supports kvm and xen, but I guess as long as kvm runs on any of the guests I should be OK too). I plan to run Linux, Windows2k (xfer my old desktop), WindowsXP, and probably Solaris 10. I also need to xfer my other old Linux system Redhat 7.0 (2.2.16-22), so that I could eventually migrate all data and services off it. I was

Adding printer stops with "Operation could not be com pleted"
Tor, For what it's worth I finally got the "Add Printer" wizard working with Samba 2.2.6 at the Unix end and Windows NT as the client. But it was a hell of a struggle! Don't know if it works with Samba 2.2.5 and/or Windows XP. BTW I don't see an "add printer command" in your smb.conf extract - don't you need that? Regs PCC -----Original Message----- From: Tor

Firewire question (Centos 4.4)
Assuming I have a firewire card with a supported chipset, is there anything special I need to do in order for the kernel to recognize the card? Shouldn't kudzu "wake up" and configure the card when I boot up after installing it? This is a brand spanking new 4.4 system and a supported Agere chipset firewire card. I'm having trouble tickling devices connected to the card.

PXELINUX + LOCALBOOT disables network within operating system
Hi, I am using syslinux-3.85 (and before till 3.72) and I have seen a peculiar problem on a couple of machines that I have in my lab. The problem is that if the machine boots onto PXE, and then does a "LOCALBOOT 0", the networking component of the OS stops working !!! If I skip PXE boot, and just let the OS boot, the OS's networking is working fine. The problem is seen of all the

Samba as gateway MIT kerberos
Hi, We have Windows2k machines connected and authenticated with Samba. We also have MIT kerberos for Linux systems. What we want to do is using samba as a gateway, clients using Windows2k machines can access their AFS file space. We are trying to encrypt the usernames and passwords and send to samba side which then decrypt and retrieve the plain-text password. Does Samba have

Network frozen in Centos 5 with Xen
Hello, I have this problem - I have installation of Xen and Centos 5 (all RPMs are from Centos repositories). I have several DomU virtual machines running on this machine. When I try to copy some bigger amount of data from another physical computer to Dom0/DomU on this machine, the network freezes. The link is still up, I can see that the connection really links on the switch, but nothing is

Sluggish server with big array
Hi! I am experiencing strange behavior with my new CentOS 6.3 installation (system up to date). I have a big 11 TB EXT4 array mounted on /home/data. The server is a Tyan 2U (TA26-B3992-E) with Dual Opteron 2216, one cpu has 4 Gigs RAM and the other has 8 Gigs (so 12 Gigs total). The server uses 8 x Seagate 2TB SAS hard disks (7200 RPM) and all the disks are grouped together to form 1

Asterisk 1.2 and Athlon64 platforms
Good evening all, Are there any folks out there running Asterisk on Athlon64 platforms with 64-bit operating systems? I have a couple of new asterisk servers to build up this week and I'm debating whether to order some Athlon64 CPUs and boards for them. I usually install Gentoo onto the boxes, so any experiences (or pitfalls) that folks running Gentoo + Asterisk on Athlon64 platforms would

Locking for Linux/WinXP clients (-or- CIFS issues)
Hi... I've been running samba 3.0 for quite some time now (Debian's stable version, currently 3.0.14) and I've had no problems. That's probably been because all my clients were Windows XP boxes. I've now moved several users to Linux (Ubuntu Breezy) as their desktop and I've noticed there seems to be a problem in accessing files across the platforms. If a Linux box

optimal hardware for computations in R?
Hi, I am planning to buy a new PC for computing simulations in R under Linux. I was searching the web/mailing list-archives for useful hints about the "optimal" choice of hardware - surprisingly I found no recent topics. As far as I know, R doesn't use threads, so I think that there should be no benefit in choosing a dual-processor machine. So the remaining affordable choices
