Domain cannot be contacted
I have setup two samba domain controllers, both have basicly the same
configs and use the same ldap database backend. Often however when
logging in users will get a "domain cannot be contacted" error,
attempting to login multiple times will eventually get them in and it
will work fine from then on.
The question is, is there anything else I really need to do to make this
work correctly?

Issue logging on in a samba + ldap environment
Ok I narrowed down the problem I am having here... I have a master ldap
server and a replica ldap server. If I point the DC at the master logins
don't work, I get a "domain cannot be found" type message. If however I
point it at the replica it works just fine. On both servers multiple
other services also use ldap, they all work fine with either server, I
have phpldapadmin on both

Proper use of SID's and LDAPon dc's?
I have two samba dc's, same subnet, the goal is to have them both be
able to answer domain login requests and therefore if one goes down we
still have the ability to login to the domain. Can this be done with
samba? if so could you just tell me generally the procedure for this?
heres what I have right now.
server1, openldap master, samba points to loopback for ldap

idealx dual head patch?
i have two domain controllers, both have openldap, server1 can write to
the ldap database and pushes that to server2 which can only read. In the
smbldap.conf file it reads...
# Notes: to use to dual ldap servers backend for Samba, you must patch
# Samba with the dual-head patch from IDEALX. If not using this patch
# just use the same server for slaveLDAP and masterLDAP.
# Those two servers

Two DC's on same subnet possible with ldap?
Is it possible (and correct) to have two DC's on the same subnet? Both
have write access to an ldap backend.

Macintosh rsync: Inconsistent Behaviour: Hints Appreciated
I have a problem with rsync on macintosh copying files that have not been
updated. Despite careful reading of the archives, I can't find an
explanation (or a fix), but I strongly suspect I'm just missing something
that an expert will recognise instantly... Your assistance would be greatly
appreciated.

Per-user home filesystems and OS-X Leopard anomaly
I encountered an issue that people using OS-X systems as NFS clients
need to be aware of. While not strictly a ZFS issue, it may be
encounted most often by ZFS users since ZFS makes it easy to support
and export per-user filesystems. The problem I encountered was when
using ZFS to create exported per-user filesystems and the OS-X
automounter to perform the necessary mount magic.

Macintosh sandbox denying access folder
Hi all,
Have any of you had experience with macintosh's sandbox denying
access to a folder served by Samba?
I don't know exactly how to reproduce, so here's everything (?): I'm
running macOS Catalina (10.15.1). In the terminal I start a python
command interpreter.
python
# then
>>>import os
# then I repeatedly list a directory others have been having problems

Debian + Samba 3.0 + Mac OS X 10.[2-3] -> insufficient privileges
hi all,
I've read trough the list and see discussions with similar problems.
I've setup a file server and users can connect to it via SMB/CIFS.
Windows users just happy. The problem starts with the Mac users.
All Mac users are using OS X (versions 10.2,10.3).
I'm vetoing several files right now, permission inheriting turned on,
I've forced the create mode and directory mode to

Mac .DS_Stores
Hi all. We have a file server using samba with a lot of Mac clients.
Mac uses files called .DS_Store to store information about the layout
of the files in the directory. We have a hierarchal storage system,
and don't want to back up the thousands, if not hundreds of thousands
of .DS_store files. Currently we have a policy in place that these
files don't get backed up, but they

Macintosh binaries; was: Rcmdr and Macintosh
I am a Windows user and trying to make life easier for my Mac-using students. After investigating the Mac situation more, it appears that the key to easy use is having precompiled binaries. However the packages I am interested in (Rcmdr and its required package, car) do not have one. I do not have easy access to a Mac, so I have a plea to Macintosh users: could someone please create them if it is

git .gitignore vs exclude file
I am a bit confused about the different purpose of each.
I think the .gitignore file belongs in the root of my project and is
project specific, but that also seems to be the reason for the .git/
info/exclude file
what happens if they conflict? which one wins.
What is standard practice?
My exclude file looks like this
# git-ls-files --others --exclude-from=.git/info/exclude
log/*.log
tmp/**/*

Lower-case filenames on receiver side
Hi everybody,
i've been using rsync for quite some time to sync files between my
laptop and my desktop
for example i use the following to backup the music library (from Mac
to Linux)
> rsync -rvzu --exclude=.DS_Store --delete --exclude 'Podcasts/*'
> $LOCAL_MUSI $REMOTE_MUSIC >> $LOGFILE
An odd thing i always noticed is that some files were always copied,

3.3beta2 on centos 6.2 seems very broken
i have been playing with 3.3beta2 for a few weeks now and i can easily
create inconsistencies between replicas.
my first test was to start an rsync from a client using the gluster fuse
code and then reboot one of the servers. after the rsync finishes, i
can see that the replicas are out of sync (which is to be expected), so
i start a self-heal via find. after that has run to completion, i

and then jumps to the end of the line. backarrow jumps backwards from the

Macintosh Speex player
Hi All,
I'm have a lot of speech files that are given from an organisation that
has a lot of audio tapes with talks on them. Many people use these
tapes, and I have started to convert to the audio to mp3. More recently
I've started using speex, but the problem is, many people are using
macintosh's and I don't know how to play speex files on macintosh,
