Why need to add a machine account to /etc/passwd first with Samba+LDAP
Hi, I am using Samba 3.0.10 PDC with LDAP as password DB. Before we use smbpasswd as passwd DB and every time I need to add a machine account into /etc/passwd so that the mahcine can join the domain. My understanding for LDAP is, this step is not needed any more since we will put all machine account into "ou=Computers". But I am proved to be wrong. Is this the way Samba works? I

group a machine account belongs to (samba pdc)
Does it matter to what group a machine account belongs to? Does that group have to be mapped to a domain group with net groupmap? I created a local group in my linux box (samba pdc 3.0.7) called "machines" and I'm using it as primary group for all the machine accounts. Do I have to map this group to some windows group?

mapping winbind users to nis uids and gids

They have the same username registered in NIS domain and in Windows domain. Is it possible to map winbind users (usually using uid & gid > 10000) to nis users, so user john

Re: Samba 3.0.3 on FC2: windows machine cannot join domain
After, oh, six months of attempts here and there to read everyone's experiences with Samba/LDAP and inability for a windows 2000/XP machine to join the domain, I finally discovered what was not working properly. In my smb.conf I put: add machine script = /usr/local/sbin/smbldap-useradd -w "%u" As instructed by many How-to's and Idealx. However, I thought to myself, %m

making winxp machine a member of the domain
Hi, I am using Samba 3.0.7. on a Red Hat 9 system. I tried to configure the machine as a PDC by using a configuration file quite similar to what is giving in the chapter 4.Windows NT domains of 'Using Samba' 2nd edition by Orielly. Using testparm shows that the machine has been identified as a PDC of the domain 'hamsateam.' To test the PDC, I tried to make a WinXP

nscd, ldap and the root/Administrator account
Hi, I'm using Samba 3 as a PDC with an Openldap backend and also have a number of Samba domain member servers that lookup the ldap directory for their account information. I use ssh to perform various administration tasks. There is an account called Administrator in the LDAP directory that has a UID of 0 . However, after nscd has been started, the next time i login to one of the member

Security Question: passwordless machine accounts
Hi folks, Finally got Samba up and running after many oplock issues and I'm very pleased. One "detail" left that bothers me. I'm running FreeBSD 4.7-STABLE on our PDC and every night I'm (root) is emailed a security report. Among the items reported is: Checking for passwordless accounts: . . CLIENT01$::1134:1134::0:0:Machine CLIENT01:/dev/null:/sbin/nologin . Should I

Synchronizing uids on deferent machines running winbind
Hello, I've a small Linux network, NFS amd NIS server with three clients. Each machine is running winbind to connect to a windows 2000 domain. All is working fine, I just have a problem synchronizing the uids generated by the winbind to a windows user that logs on to the Linux network. For example, on one machine a user can get uid 10000 and on another machine the same user can have uid

Using user account information from another machine
Hi, I had no responses to my previous message about setting up a samba linux fileserver using account info from another linux box, so I've tried to figure out a solution. I need to have two separate servers, one holding the UNIX accounts for the users and also acting as a PDC, and a second one acting as a mere file server with a backup unit (perhaps a DVD-RW). All I want to do is that the

securing a remotely hosted machine
Hi, I'm looking to put together a doc for the wiki.c.o on howto secure a remotely hosted machine. Its a situation that many of us find ourselves in, wherein we either lease or colo a server ( or many ) and there is always the issue of remote hands, other facility users etc being able to get physical access of the machines. So what are the usual steps that people take in order to secure

Re: Samba 3.0.3 on FC2: windows machine cannot join domain
After further review, I don't believe this is the proper approach to the problem. It seems to me that the %u is being used ambiguously. The logic of how the published API of the variables and the call to the smbldap-useradd program makes it important for the documenters to understand what the tools are doing... not what is happening in samba. We can see what is happening with the tools by
