Question on Inheriting Permissions
I asked this question yesterday and got some really good answers that I will
be able to use later. My problem was that I did not ask the question in an
exact enough way.
Here is what I am trying to do:
I have a share on my Samba server called art. The directory is owned by the
user root and the group tech doc. I have set the permissions like this on
the directroy:
drwxrwxr_x That is I want

administering permissions via Windows 2003 Server
Hi,
We have a Linux Release 9 FIle Server with which we are having major
problems controlling file permissions. Even though a directory may have 777
permisions when any attempt to change/add permissions on this directory
(via computer management by admin in Server 2003) this just results in
'access denied' message even though we have full ownership.
We also have a WIndows 2000 terminal

Samba 4.0.8 on RHEL 6.2 how to grant permissions via Windows to unix users/groups?
I have built from source Samba 4.0.8 on RHEL 6.2.
I want users to be able to change permissions via Windows, but I don't see how to do that for the unix users and groups in the Windows permission screens. When I create a folder, for example, and right-click to get properties and click on the security tab I can see under "Group or user names:" Everyone, kallbac (Unix User\kallbac)

Administering a Linux domain member in a NT domain, as a "Domain Admin"
Hello,
After following the winbind-related steps in the SAMBA 3 howto, I was
able to achieve console logins on the Linux workstation by any domain
user; Great!
Now, I've come to the issue of expecting that a "Domain Admin" should be
able to administer the Linux workstation much like a "Domain Admin"
administers a Windows workstation on a domain. I've seen

Permission issue
Hi,
We did a classicupgrade of our Ubuntu Server (4.3.11, TDB), the server DC5 also host shares. Post the migration we are seeing some permission issues.
When trying to give permission to a domain group/user to folder/file we get the following
chown "LIN\\myadmin:LIN\\adgroup" adtest/
chown: invalid user: 'LIN\\myadmin:LIN\\adgroup'
wbinfo --ping-dc : checking the NETLOGON

newhidups, usb permissions and Debian
Hi all,
I've tried installing NUT from both the Debian packages and the
2.0.4-pre1 source but I'm unable to sort out the USB permissions when
using the newhidups driver and an APC XS series UPS. In each case,
I'm able to run newhidups as user root but running it as user nut
fails:
--- as 'nut'
# /lib/nut/newhidups -u nut -a apc1
Network UPS Tools: New USB/HID UPS driver 0.28

FreeNAS/Samba Group Permissions with LDAP
I'm not sure if this is an LDAP issue, a Samba issue, a BSD issue or a
FreeNAS issue...
I'm working at migrating a large block of file shares from an aging
CentOS/Samba 3.0.9 server to a FreeNAS (8.0.2) server. (The FreeNAS box is
running FreeBSD 8.2-RELEASE-p3 and Samba 3.5.11.) I will eventually be
migrating the entire domain and user base off of that server, but for the
time being, I

User permissions of profile/home directory lost
Hi All,
I run a small domain for my home that consists just of two user
accounts... one for my wife and one for me. I just have a single DC and
the home and profile shares are located on the DC. For years this setup
has served just fine giving me access to both linux and windows with a
unified authentication and file server base.
However, on Monday around 12 noon MST my wife lost permissions

Administering samba locally without opening root to the net?
Hello.
I'm trying to find a way to administer a (set of) standalone
samba machines (3.x style) locally.
Most things are now done using `net rpc' command. But this one
connects to a (local) samba server over network, and hence requires
auth.
Another example is pdbedit tool which accesses local passdb.tdb
file directly as long as user running this command has the
necessary permissions.

administering an MS Windows partition under Linux
Hi all,
If I have a dual-boot machine (Linux and Windows) would I have any
good tools under Linux that would allow me to look at the content of
the Windows boot partition, administer it, clean up the registry,
remove viruses if any, etc? The Windows installation seems to be so
defective as to be quite useless so I am trying to think of a good
strategy for dealing with the situation.
