Managing large amounts of zones
I'm wondering what others are using for an interface to managing very large amounts of zones and frequent updates? We aren't using DNSSEC at all and are considering changing the code to directly query a backend database and or having a backend database maintain the zone files for pre-compilation. Thanks Christopher

smbpasswd -w account
Hi, I've setup Samba NT based networks with OpenLDAP database. But to make sambas operations works fetching data to LDAP, it should have an account on LDAP that able to write some objects, such as passwords (when changing passwd) or object creation (when registering or joining to directory) .The scope of this account is strong enough to any containers on the directory, such as

smbldap-tools and joining workstation to domain
Hi, I've reported this before but I guess I'll have to do it again, since it's not fixed yet or I'm understanding something wrong here. The problem is that smbldap-useradd -w 'machinename' will add only posixAccount entrys into ldap but it should add both posixAccount and sambaSAMAccount entrys. So if one doesn't add correct machine account entrys manually to ldap

PDC without WINS - performance boost?
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 I have an unsolved problem with WINS, when i was setting the PDC i connected it to a lan (DHCP) to update the OS, and when i changed it to production environment i defined a static IP. Even after clearing the cache WINS still looks for the old ip to get browse syncs. I've seen this issue posted in some threads in the samba mailing list as well as

'credentials' file doesn't work - also observed by others
Background: Linux, Debian (Sarge). I want to auto-mount an smbfs at boot. smbmount version is 3.0.7-Debian. With the following in my fstab, I can do the mount as root, but have to provide a password (hence either I can't boot unattended, or can't mount it during boot): //<server>/<share> /mnt/point smbfs

smbldap-populate failure
dear list, I'm trying to migrate nt4 to samba3, and have two issues at the moment. First is: I'm getting two (small?) errors using smbldap-populate on my ldap database. At first I tried ignoring this, but now also rpc net vampire complains. (maybe because of this..?) This is the output of smbldap-populate: <quote> server:/usr/local/sbin # smbldap-populate Using builtin directory

Hello, I've recently created a new server (new P4) and installed samba. (Debian sarge with Samba 3.0.10) I've re-installed samba from scratch. I've copied over the old smb.conf and smbpasswd file, copied over /etc/passwd, /etc/shadow files too. (old server (P III) was the same, Debian sarge with 3.0.10) With the new server, the xp machines I have, won't login to the domain. The

Encryption
Kevin, Firstly, you need to obtain the DES libraries. Then you need to tell the Samba Makefile that you wish to compile in DES encryption services and link with the DES library. Then in the smb.conf file you need to add to the [Globals] section: encrypted passwords = yes Then you need to create a separate smbpasswd file. Please read the documentation in the docs directory of the Samba source

samba credentials file - hit and miss?
Greetings, I'm using a CentOS 5.4 Virtual Machine and Samba 3.0.33-3.15.el5_4 to access a file share from a Windows XP host. I also tried the same using a Fedora 10 VM with the same negative results. Please read on. I've browsed the web and read the mount.cifs man page. And the conclusion is the same: you connect to a share using a username and password and you're good to to. Or,

Windows 2000 prompts for password when using unix account on windows 2000 workstation
We are trying to get windows 2000 to map a network drive on our unix box which is set up with samba. Both win 2000 and the unix have the same account set up on the share. We have hacked the registry on the windows 2000 box so it uses plain text passwords however when we log in and map the drive, it still wants us to enter the password for the user. Why is this so?? Is there a hack for this??
