Solved: Samba 3 w/ADS on Slackware
Hi folks: We have finally solved the problem. We have figured out how to correctly install Samba 3 with Active Directory Support on Slackware (and presumably on any other non-RPM based distro). The howto has been published on my website. Please visit http://www.rongage.org/manual_samba_howto.html for the step-by-step instructions on how to manually install Samba 3 from scratch with Active

Samba 3 - can not use Samba resources from Win2k
Hi folks (again)... I have Samba 3 installed (compiled from source) with Kerberos 5v1.3.1 also installed (from source). My problem is that none of the domain users can use any resources from the Samba server. The Samba server is (trying to be) in Domain mode (security = ads). The Samba server has been joined to the domain and shows up nicely in AD Users and Computers (on the Windows 2000

dataplot oen source? (was: RE: FW: re: GUI's for teaching)
IIRC, the license stated in the source code of dataplot is rather restrictive. I don't think one is allowed to use the source as can be done with GPL code. Making Red Hat 3 Authenticate against AD Domain
I have a Red Hat 3 AS server I am trying to set Samba 3 up on. I want to use the homes function of Samba and I want user's to authenticate against my AD domain. I am having a problem making the server a member server of my domain. I tried using the smbpasswd command and got the error about trying net join for this action. Also, is there anything else I have to do to get my users to

FW: re: GUI's for teaching
Have a look at the GUI on dataplot, NIST's plotting software. It is implemented in tcl/tk. The site states it is "public domain software" -- open source? I can't find anything about the license. In any case... http://www.itl.nist.gov/div898/software/dataplot/ Brett A. Magill, Evaluator Research, Assessment, and Evaluation Saint Louis Public Schools Brett.Magill at

Trouble authenticating clients from ADS domain on Samba 3.0.5 file server
I'm so close I can feel it :-) I'm having a problem connecting users to their home directories. Under "My Network Places" on XP clients I can see my Samba file server ("Hobbes") just fine. When I double click on it to open it, I get a login/password prompt that I can't bypass even though I try logins/passwords that exist on the ADS server and/or the UNIX accounts.

HLM in R
Does anyone know of code to conduct hierarchical (that is, multi-level) models using R. Beyond simply requiring a nested design, I want to model explicitly the covariance between levels as is done in such multi-level modeling software as HLM or MLwin and discussed in Goldestein (1999) available online at http://www.arnoldpublishers.com/support/goldstein.htm (a nice and free resource for anyone

Using S-Plus Documentation with R
Insightful has some nice docs available for download that are s-plus command line guides to statistics. There are two versions, one for S-plus 2000 and one for S-plus 6.0. With regard to syntax, is one a closer match to R than the other? Are they based on the same S engines? Does that matter? I know there will be differences in any case, I am just trying to decide wich version I want to

Opening Data Via FTP
Hello all, I am trying to read a table in via ftp, something like this: read.table("ftp://ftp.the.file.com/the/directory/file.txt") The trouble with that is, our ftp server is picky and wants my username and password. Oh, bother. My question: Is there a way to send user/pass and read the file into R? I am using R 1.5.1 on Windows 98. Thanks, Brett A. Magill, Evaluator

Managing Data
Hello everyone, Can someone point me to some resources on managing data in R and/or S-plus? I have started using R more and more often in my work and I really like it. But, managing data is very different in R and S-Plus than in other packages that I am accustomed to. I know that it is an option to use different workspaces for different projects or to store all objects as source and read them

Factor Analysis
Thanks to Brian Ripley for the time and effort put into developing the factanal package for R. I have found it very useful. However, in trying to replicate some results from previous research, I have run into the need for a couple of extensions and was wondering if they might find their way into future implementations. 1. Though maximum likelihood estimates might be more rigorous and

Managing Data [Summary]
A while ago I asked about data management approaches in R. I was asked by several people to post a summary of the responses and alas I am just getting around to doing it. I received several comments, both on and off list. Below is a compilation of these responses. Hope this is as helpful to others as it was to me. Best, Brett 1. Hi folks; Sorry for the off-topic message. I'll be brief. If anyone has any experience with older Spectrum Technologies Channel Banks (Centra 3000 or Centra 4000), please contact me off-list. IAX on windows
I know this has come up before but... Has anyone done anything to get an IAX client built on Windows? I thought someone had started one, but I haven't heard anything about it since - and that was months ago? Anyone have any idea what the status is? -- Ron Gage - Saginaw, Michigan I am looking for work - resume at http://www.rongage.org/resume.doc Electrical Engineering, Linux Programming,

Samba 3 still doesn't work - build errors (details)
Ok, this is simply getting annoying now. First, with Slackware 9, I could build Samba 3, could join a domain, but nobody in the domain could use the Samba machine, or browse the shares on it, or log into it. Just for grins, I decided to build a whole new machine and try with the latest Slackware (9.1) to see if I could fare any better. No go.... I can't even get Samba 3 to build. Besides

Samba 3 doesn't compile - the saga continues...
Please see my post from 24 hours ago for the background on my efforts to get Samba to run. I received instructions to modify include/includes.h to change the #include <compat.h> to #include <compat_ap.h>. Needless to say, this solved nothing other than a bunch of harmless warnings. It also caused a different warning to spew forth eternally from gcc, and more importantly, it

Status of "Official" Win Binaries for 1.4.0
Hello Everyone, Just a note to inquire about the status of the "official" RWin release. I downloaded the binaries from CRAN using the link provided by Guido Masarotto <http://sirio.stat.unipd.it/RWin> soon after they appeared on CRAN. However, following R help, it seems that there are some problems with that compilation, particularly related to GRID and Lattice. Sure enough, I
