Member server plus local accounts - can it be done?
Good morning list, due to several changes we have to move from a pure local-users scenario to a member server scenario for our "public" data servers ("public" in terms of "all members of the chair" and "all machines"). The member server is running, managing access via group memberships works. We can't add any account to the ad, as we are only a user

How can I restart samba?
I'm fiddling with the various configuration files to try and get Samba working - after making changes to various files I end up rebooting [shudder] the box to get the settings to take. I invoke the smbd, and nmbd binaries from a root bash command line, each with the "-D" option. I can't seem to send a "kill SIGHUP" command to the PID I read from a "ps -ex"

Samba Log file format
The samba log files leave something to be desired in both format and management. I'd like to propose a change if I could. Format: Previously, a log entry is cut with date and timestamp and action on a SINGLE line. Now the date and timestamp is on a separate line from the information that you'd look for in a log file (machine name, ip address, connection status for service, etc.) This is

force re-authentication when accessing different shares
hello & thx for your fast response! i need a way to create samba shares without creating system user accounts: - add users via smbpasswd with unique password - no need for a corresponding useraccount in /etc/passwd - access to the corresponding shares should be independent from any domain (i.e. the share should be accessable via windows client) to come around the useraccount-restriction (as

Simple Umacs example help..
Hello all... I am just starting to teach myself Bayesian methods, and am interested in learning how to use UMacs. I've read the documentation, but the single example is a bit over my head at the level I am at right now. I was wondering if anyone has any simple examples they'd like to share. I've successfully done a couple of simple gibbs examples, but have had a hard time

can't resolve NETBios names
My LAN has a single linux/samba server as a PDC/file server, and several windows workstations. The workstations get their IP addresses from a Linksys cable router DHCP server. I can't get the linux machine to resolve the NETBios names of the windows machines. >From the Linux machine I can see the Internet through the DSL router, I can ping the windows machines by IP address, but

problem with cached netbios name of wins server
fc2, samba 3.0.9 The samba server is PDC. Temporarily, the server was dhcp, which gave it the IP 192.168.1.64 we then set it to static 192.168.1.150, which is what we want. however, the different windows clients, on and off, on ping and such, resolve INTRANET, the netbios name of the pdc, to 192.168.1.64 still, despite me removing wins.dat. I even tried the following suggestion, to no avail

Stopping example execution?
Hello, I''m wondering If I am missing something here when creating an example that sets an expecation at the top or beginning of an action but requires you to stub / mock everything that follows. Example: I want to test that a certain controller is running a before_filter...thats easy: - controller.should_receive(:require_user) - do_get But now i''ve got to mock / stub

Changing a user's primary GID
I'm using samba version 3.0.10 on an Intel PC running Redhat Linux 3.0 AS. I am using winbind with the idmap_rid module to authenticate users to Windows AD. All the current Linux user account names are exactly the same as the corresponding Windows AD SAM acct names. Everything works beautifully EXCEPT for the GIDs generated from the from the AD Groups that the Windows accounts belong to.

How to smbmount a share on a domain
I'm running samba 2.2.5 on a RedHat 8 box. I need to mount a share from a PC that is on a domain that the linux box is not a part of. Normally with another PC you would specify your username as DOMAIN\user, how do I do this with smbmount? I've looked at the documentation, google, etc. I can't find anything. Is this even possible? Here's what I've tried: smbmount //dd192/PM

CentOS 6.5 + Samba 4.1.6 - Variable Substitution (smb.conf)
Hello everyone. So, I come to you because I have a little problem when setting up my domain controller based on CentOS 6.5 and Samba 4.1.6. Everything works well, except for one small detail, which in my case blocking me. I would like to automatically generate the home directory of the user during the first connection (from Win or Linux), but the problem is that for some unknown reason,
