Problems with Samba and security hardened WinXP SP2 clients
We're running Fedora Core and Samba-3.0.8-0.pre1.3 and we're authenticating
our Windows XP users against Active Directory running on Windows 2003.
Everything works fine!
But now we're trying to secure and harden our WinXP machines and now when
any user logged into a secured WinXP they get the errormessage "The account
is not authorized to log in from this station". I browsed

Samba4: W2k clients cannot set / sync time with samba4 AD DC
Hello,
I HAVE sniffed the network traffic for this w2k client and
provided the link via paste.ubuntu.com, so everybody can look inside
that without the need
of extra-tools like wireshark. And as I realized you have looked into
that sniffed result output. I did it this way, because I work on an
isolated test env which I cannot access through my computers and do file
transfers. And I dont

Can't Install Samba 3.0.14a
I'm running FC3 with its bundled samba 3.0.11-fc3, and I'm trying to
update to 3.0.14a. I've downloaded the rpms from samba.org, and (I
think) I've backed up the original samba installation--/etc/samba--and
I've stopped smb (I had to kill the smbd and nmbd processes;
"/etc/rc.d/init.d/smb stop" didn't work). I've also withdrawn (make
uninstall) an

Creating Custom System Policy Templates
Has anyone looked into creating custom templates for Microsoft's System
Policy editor ? I like the idea of managing workstations through the
NTConfig.POL file, but the included templates are quite a bit outdated.
Does anyone know if it would be worth-while to take the time and create an
updated Template to add policies to manage newer features of Windows
2000/XP through the NTConfig.POL

SAMBA / LDAP / Domain Password change problem
I have our Samba server mostly working, however it will not allow me to
change the password on the client desktop or via USRMGR. The error
message we are getting is "the system cannot change your password now
because the domain TOPC is not available". USRMGR reports "Could no find
domain controller for this domain"
Everything is authenticating properly. Any ideas?

SV: Getting ads_connect: Strong authentication required w hendoing ne t ads join
Thanks for that interesting information. But how come it works in my lab
(where I'm running Fedora Core 3)? Could it be because I'm running a newer
version of LDAP? You think this will be fixed in future releases without the
need to put certificated on the DC?
Are there any detailinformation where to put the certificate on our DC:s?
Unfourtunately we're not running any CA in our

I use samba 3.0.10 on my linux box and I would like to access to a winXP

Unfortunately, it doesn't work although it worked with a SP1 windows.
Here is what I have done :

added interface ip=192.168.0.4 bcast=192.168.0.255 nmask=255.255.255.0

Slow browsing/reading from WinXP SP2
Hi,
I have a Samba 3.0.9 server on Linux 2.6.9 (Fedora Core 3) that serves WinMe
and WinXP SP2 clients wonderfully. I have recently bought a new laptop however
that is not playing nicely. Samba for this laptop is responding *very* slowly
when browsing or reading files on either the 'samba' or 'jimhome' shares. The
new laptop has Win XP SP2 pre-installed. I have its Windows

Lingering WinXP SP2 issues
After apparently flawed testing, we rolled out SP2 for XP this week as
samba seemed to be able to handle printing acceptably in recent
versions.
Once we rolled it out, we started getting reports of many users
receiving the error :A policy is in effect on your computer which
prevents you from connecting to this print queue. Please contact your
system administrator." on a select few

WinXP SP2 machines disappear from the workgroup controlled by Samba
Hi,
I have a problem which I couldn't solve myself thus decided to ask here. My
setup is rather basic. There are over 20 PCs in the network, most of them
running WinXP Home SP2 and WinXP Pro SP2, a few Windows 98 SE and the Linux
(Debian) server running samba 3.0.7(-1). They all are in the same subnet.
Windows clients and samba are configured to participate in the same
workgroup. WINS is

Samba 3.0.7, WinXP Pro SP2 printing issues with netbiosnames.
Hi
We're currently experiencing some problems that wasn't a problem in 3.0.4.
Since SP2 was installed printers get connected \\<ipaddress>\<printer-name>
instead of \\<netbios-name>\<printer-name>. It's more common on SP2
machines but it happens on non-SP2 machines.
Although these issues are not consistent.
Which some windows applications seems to have a

Copying (Samba -> WinXP SP2) MATLAB generated .jpg files very slow.
Greetings,
This is a interesting problem. One of our researchers uses MATLAB to
generate jpg files as part of his vision research. When he copies these
files from the file server, it is very slow. I tried 3.0.28a and I see the
same problem as we have with 3.0.28.
Here are some interesting stats.
1) MATLAB generated files:
command: robocopy Y:\23_1 C:\23_1 /e

Question about soft mounting samba shares...
I'm backing up a bunch of Windows machines onto a linux box (FC3, Samba
3.0.8-0.pre1.3) and it works great... UNLESS some idiot disconnects or shuts
down his computer while I'm running the backup, and then my rsync command
hangs while trying to copy the files from that computer's smbmounted drive to
the server. Isn't there some sort of way to soft mount the samba share or

Update: Slow browsing/reading from WinXP SP2
I stumbled onto another tidbit that may shed some more light. From the
new laptop, I tried to create a new folder on the 'samba' share. It
fails with the following error message:
"Unable to create the folder 'New Folder'. Access is denied"
It obviously looks like a permissions issue, but what? I did not have
to make any changes to my other laptop (upgraded from XP

MS-DOS, WinXP SP2 with 3.05 and 3.0.6rc2
Hello!
I use Windows XP SP2 on my clients. I use the http://unattended.sf.net to
automatically
install my WinXP machines from a MS-DOS client. This works fine in
samba-3.0.5 but since
SP2 causes a problem with printers I upgraded to samba-3.0.6rc2. RC2 in
turn doesn't work
with MS-DOS clients. The symptom is that I can boot from the fileserver
but when I try to
invoke a program I get
