Printing OK on 98, "Access denied" on XP Pro
I have a very simple setup on a Solaris 8 server, running Samba 3.0.1 (see smb.conf below). A desktop PC running Windows 98 (SE?) happily connects to and prints to my one shared printer, but an XP Pro laptop takes a loooong time to install the local driver and then just says "Access denied, unable to connect".
I already told it to use a client driver and disabled spoolss. Here's

Changes to HOWTO and maybe Samba Guide for Solaris patches
Sun has changed the organization of their web site a lot over the years,
and I just noticed that a URL included in the HOWTO is broken now.
Perhaps there are others as well.
In section 39.6.2 "Winbind on Solaris 9" (p. 503), Solaris 9 users
are directed to download a patch from the following URL:
http://sunsolve.sun.com/pub-cgi/findPatch.pl?patchId=112960;rev=14

Basic Sol8 compile question
I'm scratching my head, and thinking that I overlooked something: how do I tell my Sun compiler (on Solaris 8 2/02) to look for files in /usr/include, etc.?
For some reason -- a steam-rollered environment variable, I guess -- the compiler won't look there. I get lots and lots of "cannot find include file" messages whether ot not I try ot use --with-pam or --with-winbind.

Solaris 8 & Samba 3: "address already in use"
I am getting errors when I try to start smbd which say that port 445 is already in use, but nothing else is using it.
In the log, the full error is:

Tiny HOWTO edit
On page 206 of the Samba-HOWTO-Collection PDF, in the seventh paragraph,
the word "use" appears to be missing from the sentence, "When Samba is
being used as the PDC and BDC the of an LDAP..." -- but that could just
be me.

Which compiler for Solaris 8?
I'm going to download Samba 3.0.2 and compile it, and I'm curious what, if any, recommendations you have for a compiler.
I initially tried to use Sun's Forte compiler when I cewt up 3.0.1, but that was a dead end. I can download GCC from all over the web -- so which version is best?
Thanks for any suggestions.

What happened to the Solaris packaging between 3.0.2a and3.0.14a?
Arnold asked:

Perhaps because Samba is bundled with the OS now and fewer people
need to get it from a 3rd party? Just guessing...

Testing LDAP: ssh connection refused
Hi all,
I installed a samba 3 PDC with LDAP.
I created a system account in LDAP (smbldap-useradd -m
testuser). When I try to login on my system as
testuser (ssh testuser@PDC-SRV.DOMAIN.ORG) I get the
following message:
ssh: connect to host PDC-SRV.DOMAIN.ORG port 22:
Connection refused.
However, if I connect to my system using with the root
account(ssh root@ip_address) that successes.

Can't compile 3.01 on Solaris
I can't get 3.0.1 to fully compile on my Solaris machines(2.6 and 2.8) Below
is an example the error I am getting. Note, that it errored out earlier with
the same problem, I typed make again and it went on to the next file, got
the same error about a file with extension .o.o not existing.
The actual error:

Can't see my Samba server into the A.D. Domain
Samba server: SUN/Solaris 8
Samba version 3.0.10
Domain: Active Directory with a W2K PDC
My Samba server is a Domain Member Server, connected to the Active Directory
Domain with the "net rpc join" unix command.
All the MS-Windows SMB client from the Domain can connect an use, without
any problem, the shares of the Samba server.
When I use, on an MS-Windows client or the PDC, the

.Xauthority & SMB
I asked this question a while ago, but never got any response. Since
then, I've researched the problem some more, so I can give a much more
concise description of what's happening.
I'm mounting the home directories of the users upon login (using
pam_mount) from the Windows server. However, none of the users can run X
Windows. It says there's a problem with the .Xauthority file.

Is print-serving this easy? Also, Sol8 compile problem
I plan to install Samba 3 on a Solaris 8 server in order to publish some local queues to a few Windows users -- but no file sharing.
Is it as simple as configure; make; make install and then share out a few queues? I'd like to add password protection to these pinters, but I can't decide on whether to hand off all authentication to our Active Directory server or just to use one shared

Why does lpstat run on Solaris Samba 3.0.1?
Hello, all;
I need help with getting lpstat _not_ to run.
I'm running Samba 3.0.1 on a Sun Solaris 8 server to share out a few print queues, and it works a treat. I also run a print spooler & job management product called Xi-Text, which displaces several of the stock lp* binaries; their implementation of lpstat (among other programs) doesn't completely replicate Sun's

Slow printing on Solaris 8/Samba 3.0.1 and oplopcks
I have Samba 3.0.1 running on Solaris 8 on a 4-CPU SunFire V480m and printing to a Printronix 5005B line printer is pretty slow -- as in five nmostly-empty 9"x5" pages per minute. (I only share out three local print queues and no filesystems on this Sun to Windows XP and some 98 clients.)
I would like to speed up the throughput, but I'm seeing a couple of errors.
First, I found

net ads commands work, wbinfo fails
Hi, all;
I compiled Samba 3.0.11 on Solaris 8 with MIT Kerberos 1.3.6 and
OpenLDAP 2.2.23. I joined our Active Directory domain, but only the
various `net ads` commands work, while any `wbinfo` commands fail.
Where can I start searching for this?
My log.winbindd says that the server failed to fetch the shared
secret. Oddly, it also says that it's trying to contact a Domain named

Custom form and anonymous printing
Good afternoon;
I need to set up a custom form (paper size) on a printer that I share out with anonymous access from v. 3.0.1 on Solaris 8 to Windows 98 & XP Pro clients.
Should I change the server to require a password and then set this (according to pages 236 ff. of the new Samba book) and change it back, or is there another way?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Repeat Review Request
Folks,
I like criticism! Please give me lots of it - particularly in respect of the
updated "Samba-Guide". It should now be up on the Samba mirror sites.
You can download it from:
http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/Samba-Guide.pdf
I have incorporated all feedback into this book. Did I get it right this time
or should I give up?
So far, not a word of feedback is deafening!

TDB to text
I seem to recall the existence of a utility to convert (dump?) TDB files
into text format so one could peruse the contents. I also seem to
recall that one could do the reverse - build a TDB from a text file.
Is this true? Does this utility exist? Would I have to hack my own out
of the TDB code in Samba?
Best
