Setting home path to a dir within a users Linux home dir
Is there a trick to append an additional directory level onto the defauly behavior of a [homes] share looking in /etc/passwd to find the users Linux home dir? It would offer a bit of protection if Windows clients ended up in say the WinHome directory within their Linux home directory when logging in from Windows so they are not tempted to tamper with their desktop settings files for Linux from

HOW-TO (mini): Samba in an ADS environment
I've just completed this little document and posted on my blog. http://bob.rasey.net/archives/000137.html Really, I did it for myself, but I pitched my voice to the Samba community at large (current and potential) in hopes it might help some other poor schmuck trying to do the same thing. Many thanks to the Samba team for a great product and some extremely helpful documentation. If you

Using Samba to Mount User Shares as Linux Home Dirs?
I'm trying to get a linux machine integrated into an all-Windows network. Following the instructions of the *wonderful* Official Samba-3 HOWTO, I was able to get the machine to authenticate with the ADS. I can also allow domain users to log into the linux machine. What I would like to do now is have a way for the users' network share/home directory in the window environment to be

Providing Home Dirs
I'm running samba version 3.0.2 on a Mac OS X Panther server and am experiencing problems when I have users log in and have their login drive mounted for them. The server is a PDC and when a user authenticates it maps the drive but the underlying folders are not accessible bye the user who is logged in. It says access denied. It seems to create a Virtual Share Point on the PDC,

Choosing hardware for a Samba based home media server
I am considering obtaining a PC to host Samba as a home media server. The server will hold: * music files (about 6000, mostly mp3) * images (about 4000, mostly jpg) * the odd video (about 15, mostly music videos) It will be used to stream media to no more than 5 PCs (i.e. one in the living room to handle 'My Picture' slideshows, and playing music files, etc). Most of the

Folder Redirection, Roaming Profiles and Working Offline
Hi, I have been trying to use samba for a while as a way to have an identical desktop/startmenu/profile/favourites/etc on multiple PCs. Samba is setup as the PDC and I can join the domain and login. The problems started firstly when I wanted to have some sort of caching and also logon concurrently to different pcs with the same user. The main problem being that whichever computer I log off

Cannot see linux machines from XP
I'll try to spell out the problem as best I can. There are three computers on a LAN, "ADS1", "ADS2" and "DRS2". ADS1 and ADS2 run samba-3.5.8-76.fc14.i686 under Fedora 14. DRS2 runs Windows XP professional, SP3. Each of them can successfully ping all the others by name. They are all in the same WORKGROUP (GAMMA5). The Fedora machines (ADS1, ADS2) can see all

Windows XP sees fedora14/samba3 shares but not fedora20/samba4 shares
Marc, et al, Thanks for your reply. Sorry, I didn't mean to be confusing. Summary of problem: 1) XP sees samba shares on fedora14/samba3 machine, but not on fedora20/samba4 machines. 2) all fedora machines see all shares including on XP machine. 3) clicking on f20 machine from XP tries to log in rather than showing the shares. Login is not successful. 4) all machines can ping each

No inbound or outbound
I'm trying to set up a 2nd DC.  The primary is a Server 2003 (ads1).  But DNS is being done on a Linux proxy server.  It appears that I have joined correctly (wbinfo -t: checking the trust secret for domain SAMDOM via RPC calls succeeded).  But when I check inbound and outbound (samba-tool drs showrepl) I get the following: > Default-First-Site-Name\ATHENA > DSA Options: 0x00000001

Hello, I'm hoping that somebody out there can help with this strange problem... First off I'm running Kernel 2.6.9, Samba 3.0.9 on Debian Linux, with WinXP clients. Users working out of their home directories are creating and saving Excel documents and when they later attempt to edit and save the document they've created it results in this message from Excel 2000: "Document
