Input/Output problems with smbfs mount
I have a disk on a samba 3 server that works great with all the windows
machines connected to it. However my backup server tries to connect and
constantly gets Input/Output errors, cp and rsync have given errors like
can not stat file etc. I am using mount -t smbfs to mount the share. I
would be glad to give any more information that would help. Thanks

Troubles loging into Samba PDC
Hello everybody,
I have been trying to set up a PDC in samba. As I continue to make what
I think are advancements I am still nowhere near having things running.
My problem is as follows:
I have been in the past using Samba as a simple file server on our
Workgroup and decided that I would convert this server over to being a
PDC. After configuring and reconfiguring the smb.conf I managed to

Wine64 status
Just wondering something: the last time I've read anything on wine64 stated
that it compiled, but couldn't run anything (complex at least). Just
wondering as of feb 25, how is wine64 coming along? Have a 64-bit system,
and due to a bug in 32-bit wine WoW crashes constantly due to using more
than 4gb of memory, and I figured the 64-bit version won't have an issue
with this...

smbpasswd or tdbsam? Which one?
All, I have a site with around 200 concurrent users, with a user count of
over a thousand... I'm currently using just one PDC using the smbpasswd
backend. I currently do not want to go into an LDAP backend... but would
tdbsam be a better alternative?
One of the issues I have is, pretty randomly, I have some machines that
cannot find the domain controller (dell wireless card utility tells you

nis password file -> smbpasswd?
ive got several hundred user accounts in NIS that i need to get into the
smbpasswd file. since samba doesn't actually use NIS, but can only be in
sync with it, what is the best way to get all these passwords into
smbpaswd? I'd hate to have to have all users re-enter their passwords...
anyone done this before? thanks in advance,
alex

Can't boot with a new install
Hi everyone,
I just finished installing FreeBSD 6 RELEASE on my Toshiba Tecra A4
laptop and the installation was fine, however, when I rebooted the
machine, I don't get the boot loader screen as if the machine can not
see my drive! I tried the reinstalling and ensured that I set the slice
to be bootable but that didn't change anything.
Not sure if this is a common issue with FreeBSD 6 on

timeout after inactivity on mount.cifs
Hi Ivan,
Not sure if you have found a solution or not since your post was back in
February, but I thought I'd reply as this is the only thread I could
find anywhere that mentions a problem that I was having on a recent
installation of Arch Linux.
A few minutes after boot all of my CIFS/Samba mounts would go offline
and I'd get an error "The host is down." But I could unmount

Firefox keyword searches for R & S-Plus
If you've 'rediscovered the web' with Firefox (http://getfirefox.com), you
might find this tip handy. Suppose you want to search the (local) R
documentation for information about the lme function. Wouldn't it be nice
to just type into the browser address bar:
r lme
and have the search performed? Here's how (on Windows):

Cannot change ACL from Windows Explorer
Hello all,
I'm implementing Zimbra 4.5.6 and Samba PDC and a slave LDAP (with Samba
too). Thanks for the great tutorial from Greg and friends.
I put all the files shared in the slave LDAP (with Samba). So, client
authenticated to the master LDAP Samba PDC, and then access the files in
the slave server. All is running OK.
There is only one obstacle: I cannot change Samba ACL using windows

Time and Login restrictions
Hello,
I wanted to improve a bit Samba security, and add same
new functions so I worked around its code. Changes that I've done
are described below.
If anyone is interested, and wants my patch for testing
please send me a message. I'm not joining it here as it has
20kB gzipped.
Patch is against clean Samba-1.9.18p8.

xen2.0.3 and aic79xx
Has anyone expirienced problems with the aic79xx controller and xen

I have got FC3 running and compiled xen-2.0.3 from the sources. The
compile ssems to work fine but after rebooting the xen0 domain the
server stops during boot at the aic79xx message - no harddisks are
recognized.

Request SMBPASWD feature
One of the sticking points when using SaMBa is that two sets of
passwords need to be maintained, one for SMB and the other for
the host OS, usually a UNIX variant. A partial solution exists
on some systems in the form of SMB-PAM modules. They let the
UNIX like system validate passwords against the SMB password
database. The problem is that, allegedly, you have to be on a
WinXX box to change your

Multiboot and machine trust accounts
I have client running windows 2000 which is part of a domain with a samba
(2.2.3a) server running as PDC. Authentication works fine. On the _same_
client I have added a partition that boots into Win XP, it has the same
machine name. However I cannot get it to join the domain. I can use
the administrator account to look at objects on the pdc, but when I try to
create a user account I get a

Samba trust NT Domain machine accounts!
Hi,
Is it possible to get SAMBA to trust an NT Domain's machine account's but
still authenticate the user from the local domain,
i.e. the users account is on the SAMBA Domain but the machine he is loggin
in from is on the NT Domain. Basically the SAMBA domain my trust the NT
domain for resources.
All I've found so far in the lists and faqs; is one way trusts where the NT
