Best practices for long-running Samba server
Hi all, I have been having the weirdest network browsing problems on my network the past week. Come to find out the wins.dat file got corrupted. Removing that file fixed everything. Because our systems typically have uptimes measured in months rather than days, and it is difficult for me to restart Samba except as a scheduled task (which I'm afraid to do because there are users who

Samba / cups problem
Hi all, I have set up a printer in cups and I can see it with lpstat -a, and I can print to it. I put what I thought was the appropriate stuff in smb.conf, and yet no printer shows up to the NT client I'm testing with, or in smbclient -L output. Any ideas at all? Here is the relevant info: ### smb.conf excerpts ### [global] ... printing = cups printcap name = cups printcap cache

Samba HA on two nodes
Hi All, Is anybody succeed to run a configuration on a two node clusters with Samba installed on each machine? I compiled two versions on different directories (/usr/local/samba1 and samba2). At this point, I can run 2 samba's on one node in case of failure but problems are on Active Directory authentication for the Fallback node. Any suggestion! I'm running AIX 5.2 with HACMP and

WinXP print problem
Hello, I am using samba to acces a printer on my Linux server from Windows XP Home SP2 clients. It was working very well until yesterday evening. Since yesterday, I can print from the server (with cups) but I can't print from the Windows clients. And all the shared folders are still OK. There is only printing from Windows clients which doesn't work. We changed nothing on the server

Copying printer drivers across many servers
List, I am deploying a number of Samba servers across a WAN. To date I have manually uploaded printer drivers from an XP client to the Samba server. But it's slow, and I systematically upload the same drivers over and over again. I'm not quite sure of the recipe, but I'm sure there must be a way of replicating all the drivers, from a central point, out to the remote servers. Copying

Printing permissions problem
OK, I just took my first non-root user live on my Samba 3.0.7 system. Printing is via cups, with drivers stored in the print$ share. This user is a local power user. She can add printers, or root can add them. Root can also print from them. If this user tries to print anything (a test page even) she gets a non-verbose error that looks like a permissions error. She can view the queues

time for a poll -- does anyone use the testprns tool ?
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Mostly for print server admins: I am considering marking testprns as deprecated (or just remove it). It doesn't seem to be that useful anymore. Does anyone use it on a regular basis and would therefore be distraught if it were gone in a future 3.0.x release ? cheers, jerry -

Mirrored samba servers.
I have a customer that is using 250 gig drives for his business data. I have been using rsync to keep mirror copies of his data on a second machine. In the last 3 months I have lost 2 of four drives, the last one being the system drive. I have been doing a manual switchover. Each time rsync runs, I copy my samba conf files, passwd, shadow and group files from etc. Has anyone setup a HA

Samba 3.0.9 doesn't remove printjobs ?
Hello! I'm using samba with CUPS printing (with raw passthru) for a long time now and it worked very well. But after upgrading my samba installation from 3.0.2 to 3.0.9, the printjobs (sent from XP Workstations) aren't removed from the joblist anymore. Means: the job is printed correctly, but opening the printqueue on the XP machine still contains the job (not only mine, but jobs from

testparm bug in 3.0.7?
Can someone verify that testparm in 3.0.7 always reports the [printers] share as browseable = no ? I think this is a bug in 3.0.7. It might be affecting smbclient listing of printer shares too. Misty

Problems joining machine to domain
Our Samba server was recently the recipient of a major upgrade. I thought all the kinks were worked out, but apparently not. I think this is the first time I've tried to join a machine account to the domain since the upgrade. I've tried using smbldap-tools and also just using smbpasswd (I have my users in LDAP). I'll also say that 'net join' works just fine from my Samba

Changed SID after copied secrets.tdb
Hi, I recently did a complete upgrade and reinstall of one of our Samba servers. No problem, I backed up all the data, the Samba configuration files, and the secrets.tdb. Just compiled 3.0.8 on the new server (which has the same hostname), copied the smb.conf to /usr/local/samba/lib and copied th secrets.tdb to /usr/local/samba/private. Started Samba, did 'net getlocalsid' and it

Samba and LDAP Base DN
Right now, I have all of my Samba stuff under ou=corp,dc=mycompany,dc=com. I have it this way because there used to also be ou=furn,dc=mycompany,dc=com with a different domain. Now that I only have one domain, I would like to move everything to dc=mycompany,dc=com. So I copy all of the subentries of ou=corp (ou=computers, ou=people, ou=grooups, and the sambaDomainName entries) to

Switch profile from local to roaming?
I've got a WinXP machine that was configured for local profiles. I have now joined that machine to the domain, but when I try to log in as a user, it tries to use a roaming profile. Fine, that's what I want anyway. But it doesn't do the smart thing and copy the user's local profile to roaming -- it gives an error instead. OK, no problem, I will change the type. I log in as

Samba, print$, HP Laserjet 8500, XP
Hi, If anyone is successfully using the HP LJ8500 driver that comes with Windows XP in your print$ share in Samba 3.0.x, can you please mail me privately. I understand the issues I am seeing are probably not Samba related. In case they ARE Samba related, here is the main issue. Printing color graphics onto an envelope from MS Word 2000. The first time an envelope is printed, the background

Desperately need help with two printer issues
I just moved a new user onto my Samba server. He needs two things, and neither of them work! 1. When he tries to access one of the printers, he gets Access denied. Only for one of them. I can't find anything in the logs. When I try to access the printer as his user, I get: [2004/12/06 11:16:59, 5] smbd/uid.c:change_to_root_user(296) change_to_root_user: now uid=(0,0) gid=(0,0) I

Non-algorithmic RIDs
When I set up my initial users for the Samba domain i did not realize that RIDs were supposed to be dynamic. I was creating the user as a posixAccount in LDAP, and then adding the Samba elements via a script that I wrote. Their RIDs are the same as their UID. For instance if I have a user with uidNumber 1036, her SID would be <domain-SID>-1036. This is fine except for idmapping for

Group membership
I am using Samba PDC with OpenLDAP2 and smbldap-tools. As part of my logon.bat, I call a script called ifmember.exe. This script can list out the groups a user is a member of. It is reporting that my root user is a member of the group 'engr.' I don't know if this is a bug with ifmember.exe or if it's an issue in Samba or in LDAP. Here is some relevant data:

OT - Software deployment
Hi all, I have been fishing through the archives and have not found a lot of posts about this that were not 'golden oldies.' Do you guys use anything other than brute force to deploy software and updates to your client PCs? I would be interested to know what you are using, whether you use it for initial OS install, software deployment/upgrades, or other things, and roughly how much
