net join echoes root password
Hi list,
# net join
asks for the root password (seems to be new).
This is not a problem, but when i do:
# ssh root@remote_host net join mydomain
the root password is echoed on the terminal.
Is this expected behaviour? (I hope not).

Printers not visible to other users
Hi all,
I run a 3.0.8 Samba PDC with WIN XP SP2 clients. I configured printing
(lprng) with drivers uploaded to the server for easy printer
installation on the clients.
This works like a charm: I can drag'n drop printers from the server's
printer share or install them with the local "Add printer" wizzard.
I do this as a domain admin on the client and it works fine.
BUT: If

Permission error on /etc/samba/private/secrets.tdb
Hi list,
I have a strange permission problem with secrets.tdb on an nfs mounted
filesystem.
A strace of smbd shows the following lines:

Folder Permissions
Hi All,
Can somebody help me set this up.
I'm trying to set up a public folder on my SAMBA server which will let
my users create their own folders to store their files.
And not let everyone delete them.
Following are the problems I'm having:
1) If I set the directory rights to 755 on /exports and share the
/exports/public directory with ~/public set to 755

Make PXElinux beep
Hi all
We are using some old SUN Monitors which won't display anything until
the OS is up and running, supplying the correct sync.
To let users know, when to select from the (unvisible, but known) menu,
i would like to output a beep when pxelinux is waiting for input.
Googling shows that this question has been raised several times and the
proposed solution was to insert a CTRL/G in the

r function definition
I am a very new R user. I am trying to write functons and debug functions.
One problem for me is that I need to alwasy copy the whole function body and
resubmit to R console every time I changed even one line of the function.
Because I have long algorithm function, copying and pasting is very tedious
for me. I assume if I save the function files, R should be able to just use
the new function body

within: order of newly added variables
Dear R community,
I am using function 'within' in R.2.9.1 to add variables to an existing data.frame. This works wonderful, except for one minor point: The new variables are added to the data in reverse order.
For example:
x <- data.frame(a = 1:3, b = 4:6)
y <- within(x, {
c = a^2
d = b^2
e = c+d
}
)
gives
a b e d c

Wine menue entry missing after source installation
Hi,
because wine 1.0 rc3 isn't available via yum (I'm using Fedora 9 btw.) I've installed it via Source-Code. In this case I downloaded it, run ./configure --verbose, followed by make depend, make and make install.
It's installed and seems to run, but there is no entry in Applications.
Have I forgotten to install something for that?

read.spss (package foreign) and character columns
Dear R users!
I am using R Version 1.7.1, Windows XP, package "foreign" (Version: 0.6-1),
SPSS 11.5.1.
There is one thing I noticed with "read.spss", and I'd like to ask if this
is considered to be a feature, or possibly a bug:
When reading character columns, character strings seem to get filled with
blanks at the end.
Simple example:
In SPSS, create a file with one

replace text at certain positions in a file
Hello,
I am working with R version 2.10.1 under windows.
In a text file, I need to replace all characters at certain column positions with blanks.
For example, say the file contains two lines and looks like this:
ab34cd78e
fg3 hi78j
I'd like to replace everything at positions 3-4 and 7-8 with blanks, so the output should be:
ab cd e
fg hi j

Dear R-users,
I am working with R version 2.10.1.
Say I have is a simple function like this:
> my.fun <- function(x, mult) mult*sum(x)
Now, I want to apply this function along with some other (say 'max') to a simple data.frame, like:
> dat <- data.frame(x = 1:4, grp = c("a","a","b","b"))
Ideally, the result would look something like

Exact, and at this point, im at also.
Here, typing the username results in the windows event and errors out.
Did a lot of research and im 100% this is and missing mapping.
Typing does not works, i dont know if this is a windows thing or a samba thing. But i found several reports where in a windows 7+ with Server 2008 also errors if you type the username.
And thanks you for having a look..

Samba printing
Using samba 3.05 and the point and print features how does one setup tcp/ip
ports for printing. After having loaded the print drivers using the APW all
the printer ports show a local port on the samba server and all of my
printers use a 192.168.10.X address. Is there anyway this can automatically
happen without user intervention.
I wasn't able to locate this info in the how to's.
