OT - use of R
Hello, is there an up-to-date reference for how many people use R? I'm giving an R demo and want to cite wonderful R usage stats. How many people use it (or download it)? How often is R used in peer-reviewed pubs, etc. Is there any whiz-bang citation that says something like "R is great and developed by the best minds in statistical computing." Any thoughts? -Andy

Upgraded to 4.8 - forced to use winbindd - retro how to missing?
We recently upgraded a test server to samba-4.8.3.... but wonder how to reproduce the legacy behavior with winbind now forced into the picture for better or worse. We specifically do not want any of the whiz-bang capabilities of winbind, just the old familiar mapping of windows usernames to unix usernames. It seems not sufficient to omit winbind settings in smb.conf; i.e., the defaults force the

Is Ruby on Rails the next step for the new generation?
Hi my 12 year old, WIX, is an amazing auto deductive computer whiz. I have to keep up... He is an excellent VB programmer and knows JAVA. I have been told ROR is the future. I want to guide WIX so he can build up a good methodical working knowledge but don''t want him to waste his time on archaic languages that will not be around soon...Should his next step be ROR or would you recommend

compile error
I've been trying to figure out for a couple of days why I can't get libvorbis to compile. It has me stumped, though I'm not a whiz at compiling from source. I'm installing on Mac OSX 10.8.2. The relevant commands are: export CC=clang ./configure --prefix=${TARGET} --build=x86_64 --with-ogg-libraries=${TARGET}/lib --with-ogg-includes=${TARGET}/include/ --enable-static

Modules will no longer be automatically included in RSpec version 1.1.4
Can anyone (David?) shed some light on what exactly this warning is complaining about? I started seeing it when I upgraded to Rails 2.1 RC1 and the latest RSpec from git. I''m getting it in some helper specs that I''m writing. And yes, I am including a module there, to reuse some utility methods I originally wrote for my controller tests (I''m switching to specs

oggenc: feature request
I have a small feature request for oggenc: Can a command line option be added to allow the user to set the first serial number to be used for the output ogg stream? This only takes a few lines of code, actually. Rationale: it is quite helpful for debugging other encoders. If oggenc is the "reference" encoder, ensuring that your new whiz-bang encoder has diffable output to oggenc is a

algebra/moving average question - NOTHING TO DO WITH R
This has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with R but I was hoping that someone might know because there are obviously a lot of very bright people on this list. Suppose I had a time series of data and at each point in time t, I was calculating x bar + plus minus sigma where x bar was based on a moving window of size n and so was sigma. So, if I was at time t , then x bar t plus minus sigma_t would be

Strange ! characters inserted into emails
I have never encountered anything like this before, so thought I'd post here and see if anyone can help. We have a java application that sends out notification emails to end-users. The body of the email is some boilerplate text and HTML that is pulled from a database. When the emails are received there are random instances of " !" (that's a space and a bang symbol) inserted

help migrating from file server to NAS w/ Active Directory
hello, I'm having a problem I hope will be easy for someone to explain to me how to fix. I need to migrate from an old server to a new Cisco Smart Storage NAS, which runs some flavor of linux and is Active Directory aware. Using something like Robocopy from the AD server, or rsync or tar from the file server does not preserve user/group identities or directory date stamps (maybe rsync

mac ghostscript help
Hello R community, I am hoping to use a new package that I just installed called "grImport" to import ps images into R for further manipulation using either base graphics or grid. I downloaded the most recent version of Ghostscript from http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/ that I could find (v.8.56) for Mac OSX. However, I am apparently quite ignorant about how the required

Use windbind to keep same passwords between NT4 DOM and linux email?
Hello-- I'm working my way through setting up an email server for faculty and staff use at the school my wife teaches at, and while not a Linux whiz, am making good progress so far. The school has a NT 4 server which is used for domain authentication, and I am trying to grapple with whether I can achieve the "holly grail" of synchronized passwords between the email server on Linux

Best mobile SSH client?
I'm up for a cell phone contract renewal and am considering upgrading my handset. I looked at some devices at my local AT&T store but nothing really jumped out at me. I'm particularly interested in a cell phone that has a reliable ssh client, with ssh-agent and public key authentication abilities. Those of you who administer systems remotely, what mobile ssh client do you recommend?

Good md5sum snapshot tool?
I have a server that is undergoing some patching soon and would like to make note of any files that have changed after the patching is complete. Can you recommend a tool that uses md5sum snapshots to do a quick before and after test, showing anything that's changed on a particular file system?

Good version control package?
We have a directory full of installation and configuration scripts that are updated on a fairly regular basis. I would like to implement some sort of version control for these files. I have used SVN and CVS in the past, but I thought I'd ask if anyone can recommend a simple, easy-to-use tool that would be better than cvs or subversion for this fairly simple setup.
