smbclient-winpopup-message
Hi! I updated my Samba from 2.0.7 to 2.2.2. Now the command "smbclient -M <username>" doesn't work anymore. Even <username>#3 doesn't work (where nmblookup finds the correct IP). I know that you have to give a hostname, but I will send messages to users whereever they're logged on. Any hints? Thanx! Jan

Re: Winpopup message to all user on a PDC
Ok that is pretty much what I do.. Except.. Most of my net sends don't end up working.. They fail unless I explicitly do a nmblookup and specify the broadcast to find that computer.. Seeing how im dealing with the entire contents of 10.x.x.x around 20,000 computers that I may have to contact for some reason.. Its easy for me to know there netbios name.. As its there login name.. sending "WinPopup" message to a user
Just wondering if there is a way to send a WinPopup message to a user (using username). I have had a look at smbclient but it appears to only allow sending messages to a computer name. Thanks in advance, Russell Kliese

Sending / Receiving WinPopup on Ubuntu Linux Workstation
Greetings- Perhaps slightly OT, but still involving the SMB/CIFS protocol: I am searching for an application which would allow a Linux client (Ubuntu) to send/receive WinPopup messages. The only one I have located thus far is LinPopup. However, it depends on the Samba (server) package. I do not want to deploy a bazillion Samba servers! TIA! -- Michael Lueck Lueck Data Systems

Weird problem in NMBD
Hi, I've a got kind of weird problem using nmbd. At least, I think is is weird because this problem isn't dealt with in any documentation. I got my nmbd up and running, when I issue the command 'nmblookup -U 10.0.0.1 __SAMBA__' (my IP is 10.0.0.1/255.0.0.0) I get a correct response: 'querying __SAMBA__ on 10.0.0.1 10.0.0.1 __SAMBA__<00>' But when I use a

BDC nmblookup and net getlocalsid not working
Hi, After lots of struggle and rtfm I finally got most things running, except for 'nmblookup' and 'net getlocalsid' on the BDC. I'm not new to Samba, but plenty more to learn. Here's the setup in summary: system pdc is the PDC on subnet 192.168.0.0, running SuSE10.1, LDAP master, wins server, domain master browser, no iptables; system bdc is the BDC on subnet 192.168.2.0,

Revised smb-wall (Was: smbclient -M --> ERRmsgoff?)
I've gotten smb-wall to work with Samba v3. If there's a better way, please let me know. rpcclient-style call for windows messenger service ("WinPopup")?
Can Samba be used to generated WinPopUp RPC calls on TCP port 135? I am familiar with using the "smbclient -M" command to send messages using the Win Popup protocol, otherwise known as Windows Messenger Service, or what a Microsoft user does from a DOS prompt as a "net send" command. WinPopup can be generated either via Microsoft file sharing protocols, using the

nmblookup failing
Hi, I can't get "net view \\<servername>" to work from my Windows test client. It fails with "The network path was not found". I followed some of the online debugging guides and have found that a couple of the test nmblookups on the server are failing. The server is named 'fileserver1' and its IP address is 155.2.196.251 for the purpose of this email.

samba 207 on solaris - idiot newbie questions
Hello all. I've decided to try using samba on our Solaris systems to give users who are stuck with PCs on their desks access to our gis data. I obtained a compiled binary package of version 2.0.7 from one of the samba.org sites, and have installed SAMBAroot, SAMBAusr, SAMBAman, and SAMBAdoc. All apparently worked just fine. I've made a couple of changes to the smb.conf file, changing

Cross-subnet browsing
I have two domains which are on different subnets, connected by a routed OpenVPN tunnel. The domains trust each other. Domain A has the WINS server. Domain B is confused to use Domain A's WINS server. The VPN pushes the WINS server as part of its DHCP options as well. >From either domain, I am able to use smbclient to see the shares on the other domain's PDC. I have to specify -W

Winpopup/RealPopup
Hi all, I have network with few win 95/xp machines and suse 9.3 prof server. On every win client is installed RealPopup (RealPopup homepage: www.realpopup.it). I can send popup message from my xp computer to win 95, and I can get reply on new message addressed from win 95 computer, so looks like popup communication works well. If I use: server:~ # echo "test" | smbclient -M bane
