Monrel Woes on Solaris x86
Greetings, I need some help... please be gentle :-) MY SETUP: Solaris-X86, ruby-1.8.4, Apache-2.2.0, Mongrel-0.3.13.4, MySql-4.1.10a I am using the typical setup with apache proxying request to mongrel with mod_proxy_balancer. Currently, I am only running a single instance of mongrel behind the proxy. I am also using the following gems with this app: capistrano (1.2.0) daemons (1.0.2)

Nightly mongrel issues...
Hi, I have Apache (2.2) setup to proxy requests through to Mongrel (0.3.12.4) for a Rails (1.1.2) application (on ruby 1.8.4). The setup is great, but I''m experiencing some nightly failures. I thought I''d post here before digging in too deeply, but it looks like Rails is going into lala land and Mongrel can''t recover... Seems like everything gets all backed up in

mongrel - server pooping out..
i am using the following comman to fire up mongrel: [sergio@vb_workstation chatlogger]$ mongrel_rails start -d -p 8088 ** You have sendfile installed, will use that to serve files. and everything works fine until some point at night.. i think it is pooping out some time in the middle of the night.. if i try to hit the app in the morning, it just stalls out.. if i restart it, it''s

Mongrel dying daily with Ruby 1.8.5
Dear ALL, I saw this in article from mongrel faq, Q: Mongrel stops working if it''s left alone for a long time. If you find that Mongrel stops working after a long idle time and you''re using MySQL then you''re hitting a bug in the MySQL driver that doesn''t properly timeout connections. What happens is the MySQL *server* side of the connection times out and

Application stops working over night: (Errno::EPIPE (Broken pipe)) is the error
I know this question gets asked a lot but I can''t seem to find the answer when I search through the mailing list. First off here''s my set up. Cent OS 4.3 Apache 2.0 Fast CGI 2.4.0 Rails 1.1 Mysql 5.0 The app starts up fine, but every morning it refuses to start and gives me the dreaded Application error untill I reload Apache. I thought my database was timing out so I added

Mongrel stops responding after period of inactivity
Hi I posted this to the Ruby on Rails Talk group but I thought I''d post it here too as it''s probably a more appropriate group. Hope this is ok. I''m running a 2-instance Mongrel cluster behind Apache 2.2.4 with Rails 1.2.3. If no requests are received by the application for several hours (this usually happens overnight) then Mongrel stops responding and no requests are

Mongrel dying daily with Ruby 1.8.6
Hi guys, I''ve been running mongrel for a while now with Ruby 1.8.4, and last week upgraded to 1.8.6. Since upgrading, each morning when I wake up there''s a big problem: 1. Accessing the site returns a "500 Internal Server Error" 2. All the mongrel_rails processes are still running, but none of them are active (when I run top) 3. Lighttpd and pound are still

"MySQL server has gone away" with Apache 2.2 + Mongrel cluster
Hi I just setup a server (Apache 2.2, mod_proxy_balancer, mongrel_cluster) with 2 Rails applications according to this excellent Post: http://blog.codahale.com/2006/06/19/time-for-a-grown-up-server-rails-mongrel-apache-capistrano-and-you Everythings works great, but after a long inactive period (say one night), the first 3 connections allways get an Error 500 Excerpt from production.log: ...

Mongrel freeze
Hi, I have had trouble with mongrel freezing after a period of inactivity. Following the advice from the mongrel FAQ, I added: ActiveRecord::Base.verification_timeout = 14400 to my environment.rb file. Unfortunately, that registered a mongrel error: "uninitialized constant ActiveRecord (NameError)" How do I overcome this one? I tried: require ActiveRecord::Base but that registered

[Slightly OT] Uploading files with firefox
I have been successfully using the latest mongrel and upload progress plugin with safari but firefox seems to have some issues with any request that takes longer than 5 seconds to complete. You get the "Warning: Unresponsive Script" screen. Apparently this problem is fixable by following this: http://computer-vet.com/weblog/2006/04/28/ firefox_warning_unresponsive_script.html

Troubleshooting unresponsive mongrel
Hi. I have mongrel 1.0.1 running a really simple application and found to lock up (rarely, but still). There''s nothing in the logs, it just stops responding. When I mongrel_rails stop it, I get lots of entries like: Waiting for 3 requests to finish, could take 60 seconds /usr/lib64/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/mongrel-1.0.1/lib/mongrel.rb:675:in `process''

Mongrel proxied through Apache won''t serve images
I followed the tutorial from Coda Hale[1] on setting up Mongrel/Mongrel_cluster and Apache to move away from my current Apache+FastCGI setup. The mongrels are all working fine, and Apache is proxying all dynamic requests through to the cluster using proxy balance. Strange thing is now, that all my images in public/images aren''t loading at all, if I access them directly I just get a

Mongrel stops responding after period of inactivity
Hi I''m running a 2-instance Mongrel cluster behind Apache 2.2.4 with Rails 1.2.3. If no requests are received by the application for several hours (this usually happens overnight) then Mongrel stops responding and no requests are detected by Rails (at least nothing is in the Rails log). Nothing untoward is in the Mongrel log. If you try and visit the application, the request times out

Mongrel performing only half as fast as Apache?
I''m trying to do some initial benchmarking of our setup, mainly just to establish baselines. I''m essentially using the process Zed outlines in a previous message: http://rubyforge.org/pipermail/mongrel-users/2006-May/000200.html What I''m running into is that Mongrel appears only half as fast as Apache when serving a small static HTML file. If I then add in Apache with

Apache+mod_proxy_balancer+Mongrel+Mephisto, Apache kills CPU
Our Mephisto install kills Mongrels and causes Apache to pound the CPU. This started when we moved to Apache+mod_proxy_balancer+Mongrel. Here''s what we know: The following things are working OK, except when used in the combination listed above: mongrel, mongrel_rails, MySQL, Apache, mod_proxy_balancer. We believe these are all OK because we moved five other Rails apps to this

Design flaw? - num_processors, accept/close
Rails instances themselves are almost always single-threaded, whereas Mongrel, and it''s acceptor, are multithreaded. In a situation with long-running Rails pages this presents a problem for mod_proxy_balancer. If num_processors is greater than 1 ( default: 950 ), then Mongrel will gladly accept incoming requests and queue them if its rails instance is currently busy. So even

deployment survey
Hello Mongrels, Building on the last messages about Fastthread, can we get a detailed survey of the different ways people are deploying their applications? It will help with near-future Mongrel development. Please include the following things: * Framework, if any (Camping, Merb, Rails, Nitro, Ramaze, IOWA, Rack...) * Mongrel version * Mongrel handlers used (rails, dirhandler, camping,

balancer://mongrel_cluster
A couple of questions please: What is the benefit of having more than one Mongrel/Rails instance on the same machine, could one instance not serve as many requests as say three instances? Is Mongrel Cluster a Apache add-in (like mod_*) or a separately running load balancer which runs on a separate port, I could not work it out from the sample Apache config... |# Redirect all non-static

ActiveRecord and Lost Connection
This isnt totally a rails question; I am using ActiveRecord for storing some simple values into a database. My problem; I keep gettign MySQL Errors. On the Win32 machine it was off and on. Now on the linux machine (ubuntu) I can'' t connect at all. I have all the password settings correct. My only thought, I am working with Threads and thought that might cause the issue, but I
