roaming profiles and folder redirection: programs 'not responding'
Heiko, I suggest you concentrate on the re-directed folders - not the roaming profile - because the roaming profile is copied to the local hard disc when you log on - so throughout your session it is locally stored. You might try un-directing your re-directed folders one at a time (over a period of a week) to see which one appears to be affecting performance. Regards, David Collins On Sun,

Re: roaming profiles and folder redirection: programs 'not responding' (solved)
I seem to have solved the problem. While I had the 'wins' entry in /etc/nsswitch.conf of the samba machine, winbind wasn't installed, so it wasn't able to do a netbios lookup of the client machine. Since I fixed this problem, the 'not responding' problem didn't occur anymore. Greetings, Heiko 2008/8/10 Heiko Harders <heiko.harders@gmail.com>: > Hello, >

Samba roaming profile with folder redirection
Hi, I have a domain controller which was configured to use the local profiles. We have a relatively small group whose work required it. Now we are moving toward using the domain for all machine with roaming profile. There are a lot of posts dealing with the roaming profiles and the folder redirection. But I've met some issues. My configuration: NS3 and SMB are hostnames of our servers.

Roaming profiles problems Samba 3.0.2a / Win XP Pro/Win2K
Hi guys, I'm experiencing seemingly random problems using roaming profiles with Samba 3.0.2 on Debian Woody and clients being Win XP Pro and Win2K (all of them running the latest service packs and critical updates and so forth). Sometimes when one of the machines tires to login the server profile can't be found. The error Windows comes up with is "Network name cannot be found."

Win XP Pro x64 and roaming profiles
I've recently connected a 64-bit windows box to my existing Samba-run domain. In order to do this, I upgraded to Samba 3.0.23c. Most things work fine. However, I'm having trouble getting the 64-bit box to properly pick up the location of the roaming profile. I want the profile to be stored in a directory in the user's home directory called ".profiles". However, 64

Folder Redirection, Roaming Profiles and Working Offline
Hi, I have been trying to use samba for a while as a way to have an identical desktop/startmenu/profile/favourites/etc on multiple PCs. Samba is setup as the PDC and I can join the domain and login. The problems started firstly when I wanted to have some sort of caching and also logon concurrently to different pcs with the same user. The main problem being that whichever computer I log off

Samba 3.4, Windows 7, Roaming profiles and Folder redirection
Hello, I'm quite new to Samba administration and I've inherited a working samba setup with roaming profiles however the login and logout times for users has been growing and I'm starting to think it's time do something about it. I'm thinking redirect some folders to a samba share on the network will speed up the login and logout times. Our setup has 25 Windows 7 workstations

folder redirecting for non-roaming users - is it reasonable?
Hello, I have non-roaming users (that is, they have their own PC / place where they sit and they don't change it). They use roaming profiles though - mainly because the profile is uploaded to the server, and then uploaded as a backup somewhere else. Now one of our IT staff is forcing the idea that these non-roaming users should have mad folder redirecting (that is, keep My documents and

Win XP/7 with roaming profiles
Before last week, we have been running Samba 3.0.28 on Ubuntu Hardy as a PDC for Windows XP Pro machines using roaming profiles. This has worked for years with no issues. We migrated to a server running Ubuntu Lucid and Samba 3.4.7 so that we could start adding Windows 7 Pro machines to the domain. We first moved servers/samba versions and worked out a few kinks with the XP machines.

Windows 2k/XP and roaming profiles
Hi I'm finding it takes ages to download a roaming profile from the server when I log into Win2k or XP. A 4Mb profiles typically takes about 2 minutes (and 2 minutes to write back when I log out). I did a test and copied the profile directory from the server to my PC. Running under Win98 takes 1-2 minutes. Under 2K/XP it takes nearly 5 minutes. However, a single file of 4Mb only takes about

SOLVED: Roaming profiles not updating XP
After almost 40 hours of work and testing over 6 computers I have finally figured out the answer to my problem of Roaming profiles not updating. This has occurred with SAMBA versions 2.2.* and later up through and including 3.0.2a (completely clean install in each case, including rebuilding domain, users and groups and smb.conf from scratch). It does not appear to be a SAMBA issue but one

Moving from SAMBA to 2003 domain with XP SP# client machines roaming profiles stopped working
We have been directed to move off a SAMBA domain to a server 2003R2 domain. We run roaming profiles with samba and would like to continue this on 2003R2. After bringing all the XPSP3 desktops into the 2003R2 domain, roaming profiles wont work. I'm not even trying to use the SAMBA generated profiles. The error I get when logging on is: *Windows cannot locate the server copy of your

Roaming Profile & Folder Redirection Problems
I'm running Samba 3.0.7 on SuSE 9.1 with OpenLDAP for auth. I've been mostly following along Terpstra's Book "Samba 3 By Example", as lots of other people here have been. The three big problems I'm having are: 1) After a Windows XP user logs out for the first time, upon next login they get an error message saying "Windows cannot log you in because your profile

Windows Vista roaming profiles "access denied" forced local profile (samba PDC), but Windows XP OK
Hello, I'm having an "Access denied" issue using roaming profiles for Windows Vista Ultimate RTM (patched to current). The actual login is successful, the full name is set properly and the password is handled correctly, however only a temporary profile is created. The interesting thing is that all else being the same, I do not encounter the same issue for Windows XP roaming
