Lag on network using Samba
I am using Samba for a file server and get a lag when accessing files across the network, I assume it is due to inactivity, because the first file I access takes the longest to access, and then other files I access immediatly after are much faster. If I do not access any files for a while I get the problem again. It all works well, but I would really like to get rid of this Lag when opening a

suprising behaviour of tryCatch()
Hello, I run a fisher.test() in a loop, with the issue that some of the data will not be useable. To protect the loop I used tryCatch but: sexsnp = rep(NA, 1750) for(i in 1:1750){tryCatch(sexsnp[i] = fisher.test(table(data[,3], data[,i + 38]))$p, error = function(e) print(NA))} Error: unexpected '=' in "for(i in 1:1750){tryCatch(sexsnp[i] =" But this works: for(i in

extreme performance requirements
We are trying to use Samba to serve as a file server to support an application requiring relatively low absolute bandwidth, but extremely low latency (think voice over IP). We find that while Samba (with Linux) gives very good performance compared to windows, we find that as time progresses, minimum latency seems to step up while under load from our application. It is almost as if the server is

FW: Some queueing disciplines that I wrote.
Dear LATRC and devotees, I have developed some Linux queueing disciplines. I developed them for my masters project. You are free to use or distribute my work. Here is the abstract from my dissertation:- This is a project to implement a Mice and Elephants queuing discipline on Linux. My project has three aims. The first aim was to produce a prototype Mice and Elephants router

Determining frequency and period of a wave
Hello! I'm collecting data on a refrigerator that I'm using to cure meat. Specifically I am collection humidity and temperature readings. The temperature readings look sinusoidal (due to the refrigerator turning on and off). I'd like to calculate the frequency and period of the wave so that I can determine if modifications I make to the equipment are increasing or decreasing

WWDC Puppeteer lunch
Reminder for Mac Puppeteers going to WWDC How about we meet for lunch at noon on Tuesday. Let''s try to get the table closet to the Odwalla refrigerator, just for reference. We can get more specific on this list on the 8th after we verify the set up. I might even get there a little earlier and put down "reserved" tags. --- Thank you, Allan Marcus Solutions Architect Central

Tar Compression issue
I have a file Server CentOS 5.10, its on the internet, so I compress all csv into one file using (tar -czvf compressed_files.tar.gz *.csv) on this server so that I can download them as one compressed file to save bandwidth, Disk space on this server available is 50Gig, so when I copy the files onto Redhat EL 5.9 and decompress them using (tar -zxvf *.gz) It decompresses maybe 80% then get error:

[LLVMdev] Variable length condition code for SETCC and SELECT?
After a hiatus on the CellSPU development, I've got all of the instructions necessary to get the llvm-gcc frontend to build. I've now discovered a new and interesting problem that I'm not sure how to solve cleanly and it's due to the fact that CellSPU has no fixed size condition flags. CellSPU's condition flags depend on the size of what's being compared, i.e., if both

Samba + ACL backup solution
Hello all I am looking for a good backup solution for samba shares, I do not mean to start a jihad between rival backup religions, but I would appreciate any suggestions. I have tried star and love it, unfortunately there does not seem to be a gui or any frontend that can be used with it (it needs to be available to a couple of GUI-only (read as windows admin) people). Thanks again, Hamish

How should I denormalise a data frame list of lists column?
Hi, I have a data frame where one column is a list of lists. I would like to subset the data frame based on membership of the lists in that column and be able to 'denormalise' the data frame so that a row is duplicated for each of its list elements. Example code follows: # The data is read in in this form with the c2 list values in single strings which I then split to give lists: > f1

Authentication problem?
LAN - mixed architecture - 2 x win98, 1 x winME, 1 x win2k, 3 x Mandrake Linux 10.0. Most samba activity is between the Mdk boxes, file-moving, etc. Versions - Mandrake 10.0, with all updates applied, Samba 3.0.6-4.1 I had a properly working lan, with occasional problems between box1 and box2 (Mdk boxes). Now I have no connection between them, for file-sharing purposes, at all. Box3,

Combined Marimekko/heatmap
Hi all, I'm trying to figure out a way to create a data graphic that I haven't ever seen an example of before, but hopefully there's an R package out there for it. The idea is to essentially create a heatmap, but to allow each column and/or row to be a different width, rather than having uniform column and row height. This is sort of like a Marimekko chart in appearance, except that

how does the bootup screen move the cursor around?
While rebooting my computer after installing the new kernel a few minutes ago, I got to wondering about how the initial bootup screen (after grub, before rhgb) is constructed. The "Loading kernel blah blah blah" lines start at the top of the screen and proceed to scroll down as one would expect. But "kernel alive" shows up at the bottom of the screen and then more write-up is
