spec''ing helpers that use controller
Hi all,
I''m in the process of creating rspecs for my helpers. One of the
helpers in app/helpers/application_helper.rb looks like this:
def page_name
@page_name || "Define @page_name in
#{controller.controller_name}::#{controller.action_name}"
end
The rspec is simply:
it "should something" do
page_name
end

helper spec not finding rails core helpers
Hi,
My helper specs were going ok until I added a call to a rails
DateHelper method in one of my helpers
http://api.rubyonrails.com/classes/ActionView/Helpers/
DateHelper.html#M000574
The helper runs fine from my view templates, just dies in the spec test.
I boiled my question down to a simple (not too useful) example. I''m
not sure what I''m missing.

adding layouts within layouts
Hi,
I want to be able to have several layouts within each other so that I don''t
have to keep repeating the layout code for one, in another. An example
would be having a layout for the title of your web page and then having an
embedded layout for the body portion in which the HTML for whatever view
gets displayed. Is this possible?
Thanks.

issue with edge rails and urls
I just switched our project over to Edge Rails, and I''m running into
this problem with all of my helper methods that call _url methods:
NoMethodError in ''ApplicationHelper home_link should generate a valid
home link when User.current and Profile.current is not set''

content_for
Any ideas how I would go about writing specs for views which make use
of content_for?
I''d like, for example, to be able to specify that ABC view places XYZ
in the sidebar, which I do using content_for(:sidebar).
Am I missing something obvious?

Is testing output within content_for possible?
I wanted to test that the links below were being rendered in the views.
- content_for :sidebar do
%ul.links
%li= edit_link edit_admin_contact_url(@contact), "Contact"
# view test
it "should have the correct side bar links" do
do_render
response.should have_tag("ul.links") do
with_tag("a[href=?]",

RSpec 2/Rails 3 - content_for in view specs
My main layout includes separate content_for/yield sections for my header,
sidebar, footer, and content. However, when running a view spec, the
`rendered` variable seems to only contain a string of just the primary
content and ignores the header/footer/sidebar as well as the rest of my
layout file (the "render" call just returns my primary content wrapped in
generic <html> and

Accessing content_for html in view specs?
Hi All,
Hope all is going well.
I''ve got a few views that create some content using ''content_for'' blocks
<% content_for :blah do %>
.....
<% end %>
Has anyone worked out a way to be able to access the html that''s
generated inside those blocks?
Since they''re not part of the view, have_tag('''') seems to miss them,

Is there a way I can create a sub-layout with ERB?
I have 2 pages that have almost the same content except for stuff in
the middle. I''d basically like to have a sub-layout that wraps the
content that is different - exactly the way a normal layout file
would.
How can I call into a layout inside of erb? I''d like to do something
like this:
<%= render :sub-layout => "reusable-wrapper" %>

Add method to get at captured content_for
In Rails 3 the only way to get for content captured with the
content_for method in a view is to call yield from within a view.
However, sometimes is it useful to get to this data from within a
helper (for instance to provide a default value). Calling yield from
within the helper method won''t work, and accessing the @_content_for
variable directly is not encouraged.
Proposed solution: add

testing instance variables that are set inside views
Hi all,
In my view specs (for Rails), how can I get at instance variables that
are set within my view? For example, if my view looks like this:
<% @header = "My Header" -%>
<div>some content</div>
How can I get to @header from within my view spec? I''ve tried @header
and assigns[:header] to no avail.
TIA,
Jeremy

RSpec 2 view example: render_template

simple output string
Hi!
I am new to Rails and wanted to know how I can print an easy
string-line.
I wanted to generate a dynamic title for my blog articles made with
"typo":
The first part of the html-title stays the same:
<title>softrockcookie</title>
if it is not the mainpage ("softrockcookie") it shall add the
page_title, so:

Testing layouts with RSpec on Rails
Hey guys,
Does anyone have any wisdom to share on the subject of speccing Rails
layouts?
Most of it''s plain old view specs stuff, but are there sensible ways
to verify things like the yield call? (Mocking doesn''t catch that)
Thanks,
Matt

Looking for help on two issues with Rails 2.1 and RSpec 1.14
I have specs that ran fine in Rails 2.02/RSpec 1.13 that are failing on
Rails 2.1/RSpec 1.14.
There is one problem and one issue:
problem: sometimes (but not always) I get a NoMethodError referencing a
has_many association
issue: in helper specs, instance variables don''t get set unless the
HelperModule is included. Using the preferred helper.<method> I can''t seem

partials and content_for
let''s say i''ve got a partial that looks like this:
<% content_for :foo do -%>
partial.id
<% end -%>
then the following works:
<%= render :partial => "partial", :collection => @collection %>
<%= @content_for_foo %>
but this does not:
<%= @content_for_foo %>
<%= render :partial => "partial", :collection =>
