Archive bit oddities
Hello everyone,
I've been scouring the web, reading documentation and experimenting with
settings and I am having no luck in getting the behavior of the archive
bit to be anywhere near expected. I have the file foo.txt in the
personal folder that has the ADS group DOMAIN USERS with read/write
capability (660). When the user jsmith (domain user) modifies the file,
the archive bit is not

Challenge to experts: Is archive bit so difficult?
I have had this problem for more than one year and have asked this same
question twice on this list without any answears for past two years. So I
assume that this question is quite difficult unless I really missed
something, :-).
We are using Samba 2.2.0 on RedHat 7.2 with domain authentication on NT 4.0
server. We are using NTbackup on a NT BDC to backup samba shares via mapped
drives. The

Error changing ACL when not the owner of the file...
Hi there folks,
I hope someone will take a minute to help me out...
We succesfully joined Samba 3.0.22 (on Debian using the .deb's from
samba.org) to our W2K3 ADS domain. We done all the steps needed to get
ACL's to work (compiled the kernel and mounted with ACl support) and all
seems to be working great.
What goes wrong is that when a user creates a file, the Admin can't

Synchronizing offline files that I am not the owner of fails (Samba 2.2.8/3.0.0)
Hi everyone,
Problem: Windows XP's offline files synchronization fails with an
"Access is denied" message, if you have edited an offline file that you
have group based access to, but you are not the owner of. (Not using an
ACL-compatible filesystem.)
In 2.2.x the change appears to be successfully written to the server
anyway; subsequent synchronization attempts suggests that the

More on the archive bit saga
Thanks to all that have helped so far.
I now have a test server running on Ubuntu 6.06 and Samba 3.0.22. I also
configured ACL and user_xattr on the filesystem running the shares. But
now I have very strange behavior that I hope someone has a clue about.
User smith can open two files (foo.txt and faa.txt) with Notepad,
Wordpad and Microsoft Word. The behavior for all three is different:

Excel - share Access Denied after opening file
I have a strange problem with Excel + Word from an XP Pro (SP2) PC to a
Linux Samba share (HOME).
If I
1 - open Excel,
2 - then open a file on my Samba share HOME,
3 - any subsequent attempts to save or open a file on the HOME share
immediately result in an 'Access Denied' windows error message
as soon as I select the root of the HOME share!

Re-setting the Archive Bit
Hello,
I am using Brighstor to backup my Linux machines using shares at the moment
as I cannot get the agents to work (neither can CA). This would work fine if
the Backup program could re-set the archive bit (Linux file owner execute
setting). The problem is that, when accessing the share from a Windows
machine, I cannot re-set the archive bit under any combination of
permissions, unless the

only owner (and root) can change attributes?
if i understand correctly, only the owner, and root, can change
attributes of a file?
thus, even though group members may be given permissions to write, and
delete, a file, they cannot change attributes, without the workaround of
copying and replacing the file?
and do i understand correctly that on winnt and successors, permission
to change attributes (eg 'everything' permission) can be

DOS/Windows Archive bits, and file ownership
Preamble:
I've done a lot of looking round news-group archives etc, and I haven't found a definitive answer on this question:
My environment:
Clients are all Windows boxes.
Assume backup of the "share" is a Windows based client. It relies on
the DOS Archive bit to determine Diff/Incr backup selections. (User
Execute bit in Linux)
Goal: Allow users to "own" their files

Archive parameter doesn't preserve owner:group property!
Hi!
I would like some advices to combine security and automated backup...
How rsync manage hosts allow parameter compared to /etc/hosts.allow?
Is it possible to use ssh key just for authentification not for crypted
transfert?
I have also a problem to preserve owner:group properties even with archive
parameter which is supposed to do that.
I have to put gid =root and uid = root in

Can't get 'dos filemode' to work as expected
Hello,
After an upgrade to samba 3.5.8 (from 3.2.5) the option 'dos filemode'
does not seem to work anymore. If I (as a user) do not own the file I
can't change permissions.
I am user 'felix' and member of supplementary group 'Development'. To
test things I use the following share definition:

path = /srv/samba/file-shares/tmp

Parameter 'dos filemode' - I'm giving up !
Hi folks,
I'm trying to set up a share with samba 2.2.8a (SuSE SLES 8) with ACL
support and winbind where every user with write access to a file should
be able to change the permissions of that file.
According to the man page "dos filemode = yes" should do it - but not for
me. It seems that this param is doing nothing at all.
I'm I dump ?? What could be wrong here ??
