AACPlus Shoutcast v1.90
> hmmm.. very interesting.. any info on how they've done the licensing ? No idea how the licensing works. If it's free for the streamer then that may destroy Vorbis's inroads into streaming. I'm hoping that Monty and others can improve Vorbis to start competing with AAC+ at low bitrates. Monty said he had some ideas but I wonder if anything is being worked on presently.

Call for Beta Testers: R+ (read R plus) for Solaris and L inux:
Note that it's "commercially supported", not just "commercial". Also, "commercial" does not mean "closed source". Open source (and even GPL) and "commercial" need not be mutually exclusive. Remember that the "free" in "free software" is as in "freedom" rather than as in beer (as far as GPL is concern, at least).

incorrect password
Hello list, Currently I have upgraded again to Linux-Mandrake 7.0. I don't think I'll upgrade anytime soon. Nonetheless, I have made tremendous inroads with Samba. With RedHat 6.0, I could not get the Linux box to show in Windows Networking Neighborhood; now I can visually see it and it prompts for a password. Cool, I said no! It's just a password issue and I have it fixed in no

ERROR! Out of file structures
Hi, Ive just installed Samba 2.0.4b. The server has minimal load, but when I copy files from a PC (NT4 Workstation) to the Samba server, partway though the transfer I get the following error message. "Cannot copy <filename>: Network Access is denied. Be sure you have the correct network permissions to perform this operation" In log.machine the following error's are

Centos podcast on FLOSS weekly
If you've ever wondered what Karanbir Singh looks like, check out this week's (142) video podcast at http://twit.tv/floss. I'm only partway through the audio version (will finish on the drive home) and haven't heard anything that would be surprising to people already using Centos yet but it's a great presentation and something to recommend to people who aren't

Slow winbind lookups
Hi all, I have a Samba 4.0.0 domain running on a Gentoo box with a 3.7.0 kernel. I have added 'winbind' to the passwd and group lines in /etc/nsswitch.conf wbinfo -t returns immediately saying trust checking succeeded. wbinfo -g returns immediately with a list of groups wbinfo -u takes a long time to return a list of users # time wbinfo -u | wc -l 336 real 0m4.211s user 0m0.000s

[LLVMdev] Windows interface for clang
I've finally developed what I think is a general solution to the problem of building existing Windows programs with clang: https://github.com/russellw/wic Using this, I've managed to run attempted builds of Python, Ruby and Perl. Python 2.7 works - it generates a python.exe that at least passes a preliminary smoke test. Perl generates an executable that crashes partway through the

Slow DNS lookups on CentOS6
Most of my desktops are still running CentOS5, but I have installed CentOS6 on a few of them. The users on those desktops are reporting that DNS lookups are slow, and from my brief tests, that does appear to be the case. After some googling, I found a suggestion to disable IPv6, but that didn't help. So I tried to figure out where the delay occurs using strace and ltrace, but that

Low bandwidth circumstances
Hello, my name is Oren, I’m using Quickblox for making streaming phone calls and the library as you know uses the OPUS codec. My goal is to make a phone call with very low internet speed (low bandwidth) because of using satellite. Until now, I succeed to make a phone call with 25-30kbps, my satellite can provide only 20kbps.. Can you help me in some way? I know that technically the codec should

very low bandwidth encoding
I'm trying to encode audio tracks as ogg vorbis at very low bandwidths for peer to peer broadcasting. I.e. need to have two streams uploading from modem users, which means the bitrate needs to be around 18-22 kbps. It's not easy to get good quality at this bitrate. The recipe I'm using at the moment is: oggenc Mon-Sep-20-04-0\:3\:27.wav -b 20 -M 22 --resample 17000 --downmix -o

ices0 config for high and low bandwidth users
Hello, Does anyone have a config for the above? I've got several static playlists of mp3's that i'd like to offer. Offering them for high bandwidth cable dsl users works fine, but i'd like to give them out to dialups as well. Currently whenever a dialup user connects the stream1 plays for about two seconds then goes sluggish. I'm theorizing that i'm giving to much for

Odd icecast hiccup problem with low-bandwidth cellular client
Here's a very odd question - I don't know if anybody can even begin to answer. I am attempting something very odd and geeky. I set up an icecast Win32 server streaming a 96kbps mp3 stream (using all the latest as of today software, winamp, icecast2 and oddcast v3) so I can listen to it on my cell phone while at work. My phone does GPRS EDGE data at 131kbps-ish, just barely fast enough to

Speex and low bandwidth communication
Hi, I'm fairly new on codecs, I'm trying to implement a communication between two PCs. The data rate should be of approx. 6Kbits/s, this 6Kbits/s can just be the useful data. Any encapsulation (for example UDP , RTP, etc ...) can be present even if that means to rise the overall bit rate. Also if this rate can be achieved on Asterisk. For exemple I've tried to change de rate on

what is the best codec for low bandwidth? for quality?
The number of codecs is overwhelming to me. What do ya'll consider the best codec for conserving bandwidth? [I realize at the cost of quality] Secondly, what do you think the best codec for voice quality is? Yours, Matthew
