Compile from source FAILED - Mandrake 7.2
Mates,
The saga continues, but THANK GOD 'make revert' WORKS. Here is my
problem. I am trying to compile 3.0.7 from source and install it on my
Mandrake 7.2 box. The gcc compiler is 2.95.3. Here is what I have done:
[stop samba]
# ./configure --prefix=/usr --with-smbmount
# make
# make install
# /etc/rc.d/init.d/smb start
Here is what I get:

smbd won't start - new installation
Hi all,
I installed SuSe 9.1 with Samba 3.0.4-suse. I can not get the smbd to
start from swat, but nmbd is running, When I start smdb and nmbd with
the SWAT restat then ps -A shows that the processes are there and it
seems to run, but not according to the 'status' of swat. Copying files
from samba and printing with the shared printers work though. The
printers show "access denied, no

can't open files off of samba shared drive on w2k/xp workstations
Hi,
I have somewhat successfully got Samba working where as users can map
the drives to their win2k/xp workstations and wrote to the folders
they are given permissions to. They can write to the folder, delete
folders, write files, delete files, view the file listing, however,
they can't open files. For instance, if there is a word document,
they can't just double click on the share and

Samba 3.0.25c Going Nuts on our Network???
POSTED TO THE LIST W/O ATTACHMENTS
--------
Jerry,
I am sending this to you directly because it contains the tcpdump
information in addition to the samba logs just in case there is sensitive
information contained in the files.
What is happening is that samba 3.0.25c, after first running
smoothly, is becoming very "chatty" across our LAN. I don't know why, but

Best way to update old Mdk box w/2.09 to 3.06??
Mates,
I am at the point that I will have to update my trusty samba 2.0.9 to
3.0.6 or 2.2.11. (damn SP2) Problem is that my production machine is still
running Mandrake 7.2 and, of course, there aren't any RPMs for the old
distro. So, I guess my option is to install from source. Do I need to rpm -e
the 2.0.9 before attempting to compile and install 2.2.11 or 3.0.6? My
server is a simple

testparm bug in 3.0.7?
Can someone verify that testparm in 3.0.7 always reports the [printers] share
as browseable = no ? I think this is a bug in 3.0.7. It might be affecting
smbclient listing of printer shares too.

'add/change/delete share command'(s) in smb.conf
Hello.
I need to allow one of my users to add & delete shares on my Samba server
through the 'server manager' applet on his client .
This same user also writes some files to the same Samba server.
I don't want the files that he writes to be owned/written by 'root' .
The way I understand the 'add share command' currently, this is not
possible.
Am I missing

STOP PAYING FEDERAL TAXES - LEGALLY!
I down loaded the Acrobat Reader but I still cannot view the form 1192 W-8
Certificate of Foreign Status. Maybe I'm not following the instuctions
correctly or something stupid. Can you e-mail me back a copy of this form so I can
read it and see how to follow up on federal tax avoidance? I might purchase
your product if you can better convince me on how to legally get it done.

How to connect across the Internet
Hello All,
Well my Samba server is up and running good, but I am now needing to
be able to let some of my users connect to our server who is not
located on our local network.
Actually they are located some distance away and I would like to be
able to allow then to connect.
Has anyone had any success with this and how it might be done?
Best Regards,
Lonnie

Samba Printing Extremely Slow from Windows XP
Hi,
I have setup samba server on my linux box (Fedora Core 4 with latest
samba, just updated via RHN) and has configured file sharing via samba
for this server and connecting to it from my windows xp box. So far,
everything works fine and it is very fast.
Then, I configured a printer, and shared it via samba. And, I can
see+connect to it from Windows XP and can even print. But, everything

Compiled 3.0.7-1 on Mandrake 7.2 -- Did it work?
Mates,
Just got done configuring and compiling 3.0.7-1 on my Mandrake 7.2 box.
The process was as follows:
./configure --prefix=/usr --with-smbmount
make
The following is a listing of the ../bin directory. Does it look like
all the pieces got built and are about the right size?? Any feedback before
doing the 'make install' would be appreciated.....

Testing to see if drive mounted with smbmount
Mates,
I have set up a backup scheme that uses rsync to backup shares from my
mdk 7.2 box to an old ibm box that is running win95. Basically I use
"smbmount //backup/d /mnt/backup -o password=" to mount the ibm's d:/ as
/mnt/backup. How can I test to see if the drive is still mounted without
using another smbmount call prior to starting the rsync backup. smbmount
works for this,

There is a networked laserjet 5000 using a static IP which I can print

The weird thing is that, on the win2k worksations, if I double click on

Samba basics

I know little to nothing about samba so need some advice on a problem I'm

error "not authorised from this station". He was able to do this until he
had his hard drive swapped out. Desktop have said they all settings are as
they were previously and that this is a UNIX issue. Other users on the

Re: Logon Hours problems (really stuck)
Hi guys,
Unfortunately this is still happening I've tried restarting Samba. Users who
should be denied access after 21:00 are being denied access at 19:00.
Our time zone in South Africa is GMT+2. Perhaps I should set the timezone on
the server to UTC/GMT ?
Do you think this will help ? Should I then leave the time set to the
current time in South Africa ? Or should I set the time to the
