Slow Printing from XP clients with SP2?
Hello,
I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this.
>From an XP machine printing to a SAMBA printer, printing is painfully slow.
Selecting the printer, and even sending the job through windows makes the app
appear non-responsive. The print job is completed fine, but just takes a long time
to print.
XP boxes with SP1 print like a dream. I've managed to replicate this on 4 boxes

Printing help from Windows XP
Hello,
I'm trying to get priting working from a Windows XP box to a printer
that's been shared via SAMBA.
I can browse the printer fine, and can print fine from linux, but not from
Windows.
The following errors appear in the SAMBA log for the windows host I'm printing from:
lp: unable to print file: client-error-not-found
lpstat: Unknown destination "level3-bw"!

2 HD, same PC
Hello,
I have two hard drives on one PC. One is a Windows XP drive and the
other is a Linux (redhat 9.0) drive. I want Linux to recognize and
share files on the XP drive. Where is there documentation addressing
this situation? Because now I work mostly with my Linux environment, I
wanted to access the XP drive from Linux.

Upgrading Centos 5.3 -> 5.4
Still the same problems I'm afraid. I read the release notes and
followed them to the letter.
I'm now seeing:

Unable to unmount filesystem (bug in kernel reported in kern.log)
I tried to unmount a btrfs filesystem located in a external usb hard
drive. This belonged to a raid1 data and metadata filesystem mounted
in degraded mode.
Unfortunately, I couldn''t save the image of filesystem but I could see
this error in kern.log:

Upgrading CentOS 5.3 from local mirror
Good afternoon folks.
Earlier today, I started upgrading a few of our servers to 5.4 based
on input from the list. So far, all has gone well. I have about 6
servers (not very many, but still) that need to be upgraded. Instead
of taking precious bits from the mirrors for each upgrade, I was
curious if I could rsync the 5.4 directory from a local mirror, and
configure yum to use that repo, if

Samba & LDAP
Hello,
I'm trying to get SAMBA (v 3.0.1) to use my LDAP server but don't seem to be getting
very far.
Here's what's being logged when I try to join the domain (Sambe is acting as a PDC).

Samba 3 to 4 AD migration - extensive permissions problems
Finally biting the bullet and upgrading home machines to Windows 7 but
experiencing many problems.
Server is a Debian Lenny, old Samba 3.2.5, new Samba 4.1.4 built from
source. My setup has been doing roaming profiles for XP since 2003 or so
with almost no changes. I want to keep roaming profiles going plus do some

Create a vector of indices from a matrix of start and end points
I have a very large dataframe and wish to extract a subset of rows. I
have a two column matrix listing the starting and ending indices of
one subset on each row. My idea is to create a vector of indices that
could be applied to the dataframe and I have a solution using a for
loop (below). But surely there is some more elegant way to do this! I
looked thorough the archives without

Male and female symbols?
Does anyone have an idea of how one might plot male and female
symbols on a graph using R? Thanks!

polynomial contrasts in R
In S-Plus, I can obtain polynomial contrasts for an ordered factor with
contr.poly(). The function also exists in R, however is limited to factors
where the levels are equally spaced. In S-Plus, one can obtain the contrasts
for a set of numeric values representing unequally spaced ordered factors.
Has anyone implemented this in R? I see that the S-Plus function calls
another function (poly.raw())

Estimating parameters for a bimodal distribution
For several years, I have been using Splus to analyze an ongoing series of
datasets that have a bimodal distribution. I have used the following
functions, in particular the ms() function, to estimate the parameters: two
means, two standard deviations, and one proportion. Here is the code I've
been using in S:
btmp.bi <- function(vec, p, m1, m2, sd1, sd2)

Junk e-mail .... help needed!!!
Hi!!
Of late, I'm getting a lot of un-solicited mails from this
list, and inspite of un-subscribing mails, messages, threats
, nothing really seems to work...
My question:
1. Is there any way I can 'avoid' or 'bounce' incoming messages
at the mail-server level??
2. I cannot change my address (alias) as such... since this
involves sending reminders to God knows how many

Looking for R analogue of S-plus function ms()
In S-Plus, there is a function ms() [minimum sums] that estimates parameters
in a multivariate model and returns, along with the estimates, a
loglikelihood score. It's very handy, but I have not found an R version yet.
Does anyone know if such a thing exists? Thanks.
Cheers, George

Extract Df under lme4
I need to extract the degrees of freedom and log likelihoods from a
series of mixed models computed using lmer/lme4. If I ask for logLik
(lmer.object), I get something like
> logLik(lmer.object)
'log Lik.' -177.1000 (df=10)
Can I easily get that df from there (or elsewhere) into an object?
Thank you for any ideas.

Can't use mount command with samba
I have a home network based on Win XP Pro, with one Linux machine
running Red Hat 9. All updates have been applied. There's no domain
controller.
I can connect from the Linux machine to the XP machines via Konqueror
using
smb://mymachine/myshare
However, I can't use the mount command.
I'm trying to use syntax like
mount -t smbfs -o username=myname,password=mypwd //192.168.0.1

Being VERY careful while using the --delete option
On UNIX, I am executing an rsync command, from within a script. The command
goes something like this:
/usr/bin/rsync --verbose --progress --stats --compress --recursive --times
--perms --links --safe-links source_dir/
user at target_machine:/parent_path/source_dir
In other words, I am replicating source_dir on a remote machine. It ends up
next to a lot of sibling, directories, like this:

Domain problem with NT4 & Samba 3.0.2a
All,
I really need some help. I'm putting samba up on a new windows domain
called SIERRA. I'm using Samba 3.0.2a on Solaris 8. I'm barely
knowledgeable on Windows NetBIOS... but am good with Solaris. The
status is that I've got the daemons running and working normally. I
have 1 desktop with 1 PDC & 1 BDC in the SIERRA domain. On the desktop,
I can see both DC's but
