encrypted passwords and /etc/passwd
Hello
Why is it necessary to specify
encrypt passwords = no
to make Samba server start using solely /etc/passwd?
Isn't it possible to tell Samba server that on the way between a client
and the server, the passwords sould be encrypted, and after decryption,
they will be checked against /etc/passwd and not smbpasswd, tdb or
whatever backend?

Upgrade Novell 4.11 to Samba 3.0.7 wisdom needed
Has anybody done such a thing as this? I'm looking to make this transition as
smooth as possible. I have the new fileserver up and running, and I'm using
rsync to keep the Novell data current on the Samba server. Any words of
advice on transferring the users and groups and permissions over to the new
server in the least painful way possible? I have some idea that Novell uses

Any danger in having two shares with same name?
Hi,
Don't ask why I'm posing this question -- actually, I WILL explain below --
but is there any danger in having two shares in Samba with the same name?
Here's our situation. We have a bunch of production machines out in the
field. On those machines, we are constantly setting up "special project shares" for
each user (different from the user's Home directory) that

Printing to PC's with no form feed
I have a binary release of Samba version 1.9.16p11 running on SCO Open
Server 5 and I'm using smbclient to print text files to shared PC
printers. This works great except for one thing; smbclient insists on
appending a form feed to the end of each print job. For my particular
application I cannot have form feeds appended so my questions are....
1. Is there a way of suppressing the form feed

Printing with samba2.0.7
Hi all,
I've just install samba2.0.7 on server Tru64.
We have one printer HP5Si and others HP4 on the network. Using Samba from
our Win95 customer we can print correctly to HP4 but to our HP5si we have
the file wanted and one blank page and one page indicated "@PJL RDYMSG
DISPLAY=" " ". So we want to suppress these pages. Is there anyone who can
help me ?

Printing: Access denied, unable to connect
I have been having a printing problem recently on a setup that has worked
for quite some time. Configs below. The symtoms are slightly different
on a W2K and a WinME workstation, but the result is the same; no printed
output. However, when I print from the local Unix server or from any
other Unix server in the network the output is as expected.
The W2K machine reports 'Access denied,

HP Deskjet 1000c
Howdy all -
I have Samba 2.0.3 running like a champ on a dual PPro 200, 128 MB RAM,
running Slackware 3.6, kernel 2.2.5. Running like a champ as far as file
sharing is concerned, that is.
I have an HP Deskjet 1000c hanging off the parallel port. I set up a raw
printer in /etc/printcap, the line looks like this:
dj1000|DeskJet 1000c:sh:lp=/dev/lp0:sd=/var/spool/lpd/dj1000

Samba - cannot print multiple copies
Hi,
I successfully setup printing on my FreeBSD box
using Samba with apsfilter and lprng. However, I
have encountered two issues:
1) Cannot print multiple copies of documents from
my windows box (e.g. notepad). Only the first
copy is printed and the rest don't get printed.
2) My spool directory is getting filled up and
I would like the job removed after the print
job is finished

Page printing problem
I'm having a problem printing from a W2K client to an HP4 Plus
printer connected to a FreeBSD 4.5 server.
Using lpd from either the server or other clients on the network
prints correctly. The printer also works fine when connected directly
to the W2K client.
Anything I print from the W2K client with more than one page, prints
all pages on one piece of paper. Makes it a little hard to

Printing to Samba 2.0.7 from Windows 2000
Hi,
I've recently installed LPRng 3.6.22, ifhp 3.3.19, and
Samba 2.0.7 on my FreeBSD 4.1 system. Printing works
fine from the FreeBSD machine, and I am able to access
shares via my Win2000 machine. I've configured a
[printers] section in smb.conf, and I am able to see
the LaserJet 2100 when browsing, but on installing it
I am unable to print to it. I get en error connecting
