Good Morning,
I am trying to setup a basic samba config by first starting up swat. I have
followed the guide http://us2.samba.org/samba/docs/using_samba/ch02.html but
have problems.

WAS: Newbie: can't connect localhost:901 - help
Don't feel stupid. I'd guess you're using 2.4 kernel and not the 2.2 kernel?
In 2.2 services default to using inet.d
In 2.4 services default to using xinetd to start stuff.
You need to go to /etc/xinet.d and make sure the file swat
has a "disable=no" in it.
As a matter of fact, for security purposes, I'd do a vi * in that directory (/etc/xinet.d ) and make sure

SWAT works with Webmin but not via localhost:901
I have tried everything that I know of.
I have reviewed the services file and the swat file in xinetd.d a tun of times. It appears, via netstat that swat is listening on port 901.
However when I attempt to access it via the Mozilla browser on my Fedora server (with 127.0.0.1:901 or localhost:901) nothing happens. It just sits there.
However, if I access it via webmin (which has swat stored

Upgrading bundled Samba in Mac OS X to 3.5.1?
Hi. I just joined the Samba mailing list and this is my first question.
I would like to upgrade on of my PowerPC Macs (running Mac OS X
10.5.8) to Samba 3.5.1 without stomping on the bundled installation
(3.0.25b-apple).
This is something I've never attempted before, and though I've made
progress, I'm stuck trying to figure out how to override Apple's
version of Samba.
So far,

lokkit
I have used lokkit to setup iptables ( I have a big script that does
this) basically just ports I want with "--port=https:tcp" etc...
I wish to allow igmp and add igmp to the lokkit command line?
How do I do that?
I can add this to /etc/sysconfig/iptables:
iptables -A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -i eth1 -j ACCEPT
iptables -A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -i eth1 -p igmp -j ACCEPT

2.2.8a newbie path problem
Hi
I'm presently installing 2.2.8a on Mandrake 9.1
I'm a newbie to Linux as well as Samba, so it's been fun...
When I first installed Linux I installed Samba from the discs (2.2.7a), but
on reading up on the subject it became clear that I should give installing
the source a go.
My problem is this - I don't think I have rerouted all of the paths to
usr/local/samba from what

Still having that problem with samba seemingly corrupting files, it seems to be the same files that are corrupted again and again, yet they are corrupted differently and sometimes not. I ran my md5 summer against one file ch02.pdf, and it almost contineously corrupts, I checked in a hex editor and there are some differences. Yet the problem is that

FW: Newbie Help
I guess you are in what I think of as "Newbie Hell." It sounds like you
are learning linux like a lot of people, all by yourself. That's how I
did it, and it is maddening and worse, very time consuming. The important
thing is not to keep hitting your head against the brick wall over
and over.
So, what to do.
First, I would join a linux email support group. I belong to a very good

Connection refused
Hi,
Here is my situation : I have installed Samba 2.0.6 on my computer, which is
running with Linux RedHat 6.0.
When somebody tries to connect to this server, he's got a 'refused
connection' message after he tried to my_IP@:139.
I don't think the smb.conf is responsible because we have tried with the
basic one, and it doesn't change anything.
As I'm fresh in Linux (and

Redhat firewall problem...
I've just tried setting up a Shrike (9) version of Redhat. Using the
medium settings of lokkit, then adding manually accept commands for
ports 137/udp 138/udp, 139/tcp and 445/tcp, I thought I should have been
ready to go.
This isn't the case, however. I know it's not the smb.conf settup
because when I kill iptables samba works.
When iptables IS running however, it will respond
