Win2K Client / Samba 3.0.4 PDC -> Setting Win2K Profile Settings
I'm trying to locate the list of registry values to adjust how Win2K clients handle the user profile with the Win2K boxes joined to a Samba PDC and logging in with domain accounts. Specifically I
would like to DISABLE roaming profiles!!!
Many moons ago, the WarpServer Win2K client from IBM came with very good documentation on how to adjust that client to not create roaming profiles, etc...

storing of roaming profile fails
Hi list,
a strange problem occurs in samba 3.0.8 (Debian 3.0.8-2 package):
When a Domain-User tries to log off (WinXP SP2), the workstation fails
to store the profile in the PROFILE-Path.
The message "cannot store \\SERVER\Profiles\Administrator\Recent" pops up.
But this is only the half truth.
The directory for the user (f.e. Administrator) is been created.
A few files are copied

roaming profiles and samba
I have a network comprised of a linux server (mandrake) running samba 3.0.4
as a PDC and clients all being windows xp. I am in the process of doing a
practice run of roaming profiles and am currently stuck. What is the most
common way to prevent two of the workstations from logging into the pdc and
thus corrupting the roaming profile? Ive googled this till im blue in the
face and am getting

Roaming/local profiles behavior in XP
Hey all,
Relatively new to Samba configuration here - I've set up a system where
XP clients can login and get their roaming profiles and all is well
with that, but I see the synchronization which takes place on logout to
be a big problem. So, I'm looking to turn off roaming profiles and
instead go with remapping the documents, desktop and pictures folders
to their server

Is there a way to support both local and roaming profile with one server / domain?
Recent list messages got me thinking... Is there a way to support both local and roaming profile with one server / domain?
As I understand it, the "magic" line that tells Samba not to do roaming profiles is the smb.conf line:
logon path =
Which the line must exist, and must be set to null.
But that is in the global section. So is there a way to support both local and roaming...

PDC without profiles?
Hi --
I'd like to try running Samba as a PDC simply for authentication -- that
is without doing any profile management, i.e. I'd like Windows to not
write anything to the network after logout. Is this possible with Samba?
I'm not seeing an obvious answer to this. Thanks!

w32time and Samba PDC Domains
I see that the w32time service as it is configured when a Win2K Pro client joins a Samba PDC Domain is not configured in such a way that the service is able to successfully sync time with Samba.

PDC Administrative scripting
Hello:
It's been quite some time since I've posted to the samba lists. I'm
wondering if there are any other Samba administrators out there that have
developed shell and/or PERL scripting for managing user profile (roaming)
directories. Essentially what we're trying to accomplish is automated
cookie cleanup "illegal file" (i.e., mp3, wav, avi, etc.) file clean up

Reality Check -> Roaming Profiles
Disclaimer... I know Roaming Profiles are a modern day example of "the emperor?s new cloths". I also know that 2+2=4.
Let's think Linux/Unix here a second. Preference files are stored in the user's home dir. A user can log in (text or X) multiple times, they will always get the same home dir. Thus each login instance
will share those config files.
The same just happens to be

Minor annoyances: Samba 3.0.2/Win2k and WinXP
I have three users that are having trouble with my Samba network. This
trouble is composed of two (possibly distinct) issues. My network is
controlled by a Red Hat ES 3 server running Samba 3.0.2 with an LDAP
backend.
Issue 1: Laptop users, with "Offline Files" that are made of their "My
Documents" directories. These directories are stored on the Samba server

Error messages every 32min after Win2k security update
I'm running Samba 3.0.10 from Debian Sarge (3.0.10-1). Samba is
configured as the primary browse master for the network, and there are
two windows boxes that access shares from the samba box, one win2k and
the other XP Pro.
Earlier this week, I installed a number of patches to the win2k box via
windows update. I'm having trouble finding out exactly what patches
were installed, but

How do you create an accout that can ONLY add workstations to the domain
Is there some way to configure a special account which is able to only join workstations to the domain? I believe the operation talks over IPC$ - such as the NETDOM.EXE command. Can one set admin
users for IPC$ and thus join the domain without allowing that special account too much access to Samba.
Maybe one extension of this would be allowing to join workstations to the domain plus read only

Samba not listening on 127.0.0.1... hua???
<rant>Every time I set up a new test Samba server, the step to "net rpc rights grant..." ALWAYS fights me tooth and nail... ALWAYS with a different error message. I've even created little scripts to
run so I am not typing commands incorrectly... but NNNOOOOOO, the script to grand rights to one stink'n account always has to complain!</rant>

Does "Admin Users =" accept groups?
man smb.conf does not specifically say admin users supports @groupname syntax. Google turns up lots of examples of it being used, but everyone hanging their smb.conf's up to air does not mean they are
100% accurate either.
Here, Samba 3.0.4 in PDC mode, I can not get it to accept the name of a group in /etc/group, user ID's only.

Setting home path to a dir within a users Linux home dir
Is there a trick to append an additional directory level onto the defauly behavior of a [homes] share looking in /etc/passwd to find the users Linux home dir? It would offer a bit of protection if
Windows clients ended up in say the WinHome directory within their Linux home directory when logging in from Windows so they are not tempted to tamper with their desktop settings files for Linux from

What file gets corrupted in Samba when perms stop working correctly?
I have a share which a group write list.
That group is mapped to a Linux group in /etc/group.
That group in Linux has two users.
The first user listed is suddenly unable to write, but the second one is.
With the affected user logged in to Win2K, ifmember /list shows they are a member of the group, as does the working account.
I am guessing one of those .tdb files or something got scrambled on the

Samba lock problem?
Hi,
Is there a locking problem with version 3.0.2a? We have been running this
version over the past several weeks with no problems, but over the past few
days have been experiencing horrendous apparently random problems with
Outlook, Printing and Excel.
Outlook fails with the error "folder being modified by another workstation"
Excel gives "disk full" errors
Printing stops
