[profiles] server seperate from PDC ?
Hi! Due to performance problems (old donated hardware) I would like to move [profiles] service from our Samba 2.2.8a PDC to a seperate samba server. 1) Is this at all possible and 1b) how do I make this profile server know all necessary user data and file permissions? - Does it simply have to become a domain member server? Or do I have to transfer the UNIX accounts, too?

DVD burner in WINE
I have a program, ProShow Producer, that works flawlessly in WINE, but I need to use a DVD burner in it. The program will only export the DVD slideshows to a disc, not an image, so I need to be able to use the burner or somehow fake it and save to an image. Does anyone know how I can either get the burner working or (ideally) fake the burner and create an image instead?? Thanks so much for the

ATA driver not as good in 4.8 as 4.5?
I have a Lite-On 24102B burner on an Epox 7KXA (VIA 686A southbridge) together with a few SCSI disks. I recently upgraded from FreeBSD 4.5 to 4.7 then almost immediately to 4.8. I've had trouble with the burner since. With FreeBSD 4.5, I used "sysctl hw.atamodes=---,---,dma,---" to set the burner to DMA. Everything then worked fine. As far as I know it was using UDMA33.

SATA DVD Burner / AHCI / CentOS 4.7 (kernel: 2.6.9-78.0.22.EL)
OK, it seems that the kernel I have (stock CentOS 4.7: 2.6.9-78.0.22.EL i686) seems to gronk the nVideo SATA controller in AHCI mode. It is NOT able to deal with the SATA DVD Burner I have. It is a "Sony Optiarc DVD Burner with LightScribe Black SATA Model AD-7241S-0B LightScribe Support". Is there some special magic I need to do? Here is the relevant bit from the boot up (SATA ports

Hardware serial number access from (a) command(s)
Over the weekend, I had to make a technical support call on one of my DVD burners, and at one point the recorded message mentioned I should have my serial number handy. I thought there was a way to read that from at least one piece of software on the system, but I couldn't remember one and man -k on a number of subjects was unrevealing. Can someone enlighten me (us)? Thanks. mhr

PCI passthrough of a SATA/PATA controller, "FLR functionality not supported"
Hi there, I have a question regarding PCI passthrough on the Citrix XenServer 5.6 (Xen 3.4.2). I already managed to get some soundcard passed through to a Windows guest. So I think my knowledge about that topic isn''t _that_ low. But I cannot seem to pass through a SATA/PATA controller to a Linux guest. I have some additional CD/DVD burner (PATA) attached to a SATA/PATA controller

Problems w/ CentOS 4.4 ....
.... I just installed CentOS 4.4 yesterday P.M., on my 2.4 GHz P4 box, Foxconn i865 mbd, 2 GB DDR400 RAM (4 X 512 MB), 1 X 20 GB HDD (hda), 1 X 160 GB HDD (hdb), 1 X LG GSA H22N DVD reader/burner (hdc), 1 X 400 GB HDD (hdd), Coolmax CP500-T PSU. I wiped SuSE 9.2 off of the 20 GB drive & installed CentOS. The other 2 drives were already ext3 FS & will be mounted as /home & /work

Using cdrecord on CentOS
Hi, I'd like to use cdrecord on the command line. I'm currently reading the relevant chapter in Carla Schroder's "Linux Cookbook". Unfortunately, some of the tricks and hints included in the book don't seem to work the same way on a standard CentOS 5 install. 1) Am I supposed to be root to use cdrecord and burn an .iso file? 2) How do I specify a device?

Gnome CD/DVD Burner?
Hi all, Wondering if this might be a good item for either CentOSPlus or even Extras repository. I've been looking for a decent CD/DVD burner for Gnome.... at present I load up k3b (KDE app) and thus much of the KDE environment). Someone pointed me to GraveMan (http://www.nongnu.org/graveman/ ) which looks very good. All reports is that it's lean, mean and quite stable. Anyone else

Qanah being put on the back burner - for now
All - I owe a few people an apology. I jumped in to trying to start up a project at a time when my schedule just wouldn''t handle the load. I did not accurately estimate my time commitments for the coming months when I made the announcement of Qanah this past March. So, for now, Qanah is being put on the back burner. Note I didn''t say abandoned: just postponed. If you

CHAINing to a USB Thumb Drive
I was doing a laptop repair job today and needed to boot from a USB thumb drive, in order to free up the CD/DVD burner. Fortunately, the laptop to be repaired permitted one to boot from a USB thumb drive. However, there are still PCs out there that can't boot from a thumb drive (I have two), so I was wondering if it's pos to use the CHAIN module to boot from a thumb drive ? I looked at

MD5 checker for Win2000 for ISOs
For a change, I am going to try and check the checksum before burning the CDs.... My burner is on a Win2000 box, and I have all 6 of the Centos 5 ISO images there already. So I grab a checker from: http://www.diamondcs.com.au/freeutilities/md5.php And checking the ISO image files with this program, I get different numbers than in the MD5 hash txt file. Can anyone point me to a

Weird netinstall issue
Hi. The other day I burnt a copy of a CentOS 6.4 64 bit netinstall disc, verified the disc which passed & about a third of the way through the install it informed me that there was no CD in the drive & refused to carry on. So I burnt another & the same thing happened. So using the same disk burner & the same batch of disks, I burnt a copy of a Debian 7.1 netinstall & it

ftp issue in Centos 5.3
I manage a small server that I back up weekly. I do this by making a tarball of relevant files then transferring it over the local subnet to my station (Fedora 11), whereupon I burn it to DVD. There is no optical burner on the server. The tarball amounts to a bit under 5 gigs. Recently I've started getting an error telling me to try PASV or PORT first. I use the gFTP client on my

PCI Master Abort
I am always getting multiple PCI Master Abort messages when I try to plug in a second TDM400P. I have asked this question before, but I nothing really solved my problem and I just put it on the back burner for a while. I am at a point where this is a crucial issue. I have read that the Zaptel devices share an IRQ, is this causing the problem? Is there a way that I can manually change the IRQs of

Problems joining a Samba domain
Hi, I am trying to set up a SAMBA-PDC for our school's network and find a strange Problem with two Win2k workstations. When I try to join the SAMBA domain I receive an error which says the user account - I am using root - is unknown. I call this "strange" because other Win2k machines on the very same subnet work correctly - and what is even stranger: I can manually access all
