Domain problem with NT4 & Samba 3.0.2a
All,
I really need some help. I'm putting samba up on a new windows domain
called SIERRA. I'm using Samba 3.0.2a on Solaris 8. I'm barely
knowledgeable on Windows NetBIOS... but am good with Solaris. The
status is that I've got the daemons running and working normally. I
have 1 desktop with 1 PDC & 1 BDC in the SIERRA domain. On the desktop,
I can see both DC's but

smbcontrol
All,
I want to be able to disconnect a user from a samba share. I'm using
Samba 2.2.8a on Solaris 8. If I'm reading OReilly correctly, I should
be able to use smbcontrol with the SMBD process id of the user who has
the share mounted. Here's an example:

Many Thanks for your explanation, Ted!
All the necessaries to produce (and live from) new UPS-Equippment I
understand. Because of this I decided years ago to sell MGE-UPS. MGE did
have the greatness to pay Arnaud Quette to improve the Metasoftware NUT.
So we have one Software for brand new models and over 20years old IT
dinosaur. We earn money with replacement of accumulators and save in

Occasional failure of authentication
Every once in a while a user cannot connect to one of two samba
servers. Most of the time (but not always), if he waits 15 minutes
to an hour, he can connect successfully. Sometimes he can connect to
one server, but not the other, which have the same configuration.
We are using authentication from the NT server. Samba version 2.0.3

Incompatibility with free version
First off, I am not a subscriber, so please CC replies to my
email address. The problem I am having -- I do not know who is to blame,
but am just covering all angles. I run OpenSSH 2.1.1 on FreeBSD. When I
try to connect to a server running ssh2d from ftp.ssh.com, it fails
saying corrupted MAC on input. I am including a log of my connection
below:
% ssh -v -l diwanh tomcat

Administration
I know this may sound a bit lazy, but I don't really wanna bother with
writing many scripts from the Administration of my SMB-2.2.2 as an NT PDC
Box... (like adding users, deleting users, adding shares and modifying
passwords stuffs, knowing that I do the Unix-SMB password sync)... So does
anyone have good scripts, or some reference pages?? I searched everywhere in
vain for that...

Samba Configuration
Maybe I'm missing this - but I'm having problems setting up some file
shares that are limited to certain groups. I've done countless searches
on setups and on the tree connnect failed error message, and just
haven't found anything that solves my problem.
I am able to create shares that are basically open to the public, but I
know the security is all messed up.
I have openLDAP

Problem with reboot of machine with openLDAP
I'm having a problem with the reboot of a machine. I can get a list of
the shares by running
smbclient -L BGCFC
but if I reboot, I get
smbclient -L BGCFC
Error connecting to 192.168.10.100 (Connection refused)
Connection to BGCFC failed (Error NT_STATUS_CONNECTION_REFUSED)
but if I restart slapd it works correctly again. What could be wrong?
Thanks

cron'ing rsync
My setup is: I run rsync daemonized on various server machines in my LAN
- i.e., the source machines certain partitions of which I want to
backup. I would like the client, destination archiving machine to run
hourly crons over SSH, but so far the only thing I have been able to do
is rsync across (as root so that I am not denied anything) only after
interactively supplying my root password to the

Multiply Iterated Measurements and Pairwise Comparison
I am familiar with pairwise t-tests, corrections for multiple testing, etc. however I have a problem whose answer I have not found after extensive R-help archive and Google searching.
What I have done in the past:
I have N items which are measured, exposed to a condition, and then measured again. I wish to know if the condition changes the items so I can perform a t-test. Better yet I can

Best way to setup Samba + OpenLDAP + Linux to use a different partition for /home?
Thanks in advance! I can't believe the level of service / help I've
gotten from this group.
Anyway, I have a Samba server acting as a PDC on a network. The server
has a small OS drive and one very large RAID array for data / files.
Right now, I have Ubuntu 8.04 installed and Samba is using openLDAP for
authentication.

Carsten,
This is a common issue in technology when you have complex products
that the majority of consumers of those products do not understand how
they operate.
If most UPS customers understood the importance of standardization they
would have refused to purchase non-standard UPSes and all UPSes would
have long ago standardized on a single management protocol.
The normal thing is that product

ZFS Compression algorithms - Project Proposal
Bellow, follows a proposal for a new opensolaris project. Of course,
this is open to change since I just wrote down some ideas I had months
ago, while researching the topic as a graduate student in Computer
Science, and since I''m not an opensolaris/ZFS expert at all. I would
really appreciate any suggestion or comments.

LDAP: strange "net groupmap" behaviour
Dear Sirs,
I did the following command (against ldapsam backend):
net groupmap add rid=3002 unixgroup=wheel type=local ntgroup=Marketoids
comment=Mm -d 10
I just wanted to add new group. But instead of that I saw many-many-many
records:
lib/smbldap.c:smbldap_search(963)
passdb/pdb_ldap.c:ldapsam_getgroup(2008)
they all wanted to find group with gidNumber=4294967295, yes, sure,

Having problems with Samba and openLDAP Groups
I'm getting a little closer and understanding how the logs, etc work. I
can log onto a Samba share, can read and write to my home directory, but
I'm concerned about trying to get the file share Staff to work - want it
to be read and write to the Group named Staff. I have set up the group
and added myself to the group
If I do a smbldap-groupshow Staff - I get

Does this tell me anything? Traffic report
I'm trying to get Samba up and running and having a terrible time. It
says that I should be able to run nmap and see that 137 and 139 are open
- which they are not. I have not added any restrictions in smb.conf, do
not have a firewall running and I have increased the log level to 5 to
see all of the messages. It says that it is talking on 137 but it kind
of looks like it's not talking
