SMP/PCMCIA
I have two sacrificial lambs -- one is an SMP box, the other one''s a
laptop, but I don''t see kernel-smp or kernel-pcmcia-cs packages.
So, can I use the ext3 patch on an SMP box or a laptop?

Hi,
When there is a blank in the name scp doesn't work correctly:

Converting / to ext3.
My guinea pig laptop has only a / partition, and a small /boot
partition. I installed the ext3 kernel succesfully (I think). Now, how
do I get / converted to ext3? I'm thinking:
* Use mkbootdisk on a floppy, to create a boot disk with the ext3 kernel.
* Boot off the floppy.
* Follow the instructions to convert / to ext3.
* Change the filesystem type in /etc/fstab to ext3.
* Reboot.

Compiler Cert Suggestions
Somewhere on the download page you should make *very* clear that audio
encoders in general are *very* compiler dependent. To that end, when you
approach 1.0 release, you should enumerate known working and broken
compilers (including which optimization flags are recommended for each).
These checks should probably also be included in the .spec file to prevent
people from rpm --rebuilding without

sftp client
As of Sunday evening, OpenSSH has an interactive sftp client. It should
be in the more recent snapshots.
It would be appreciated if you could test new client and find all the
bugs :) Please also have a read of the manpage and ensure that it
matches what is implemented.
I am working on fixing the ones that I know about, so please try to
stay up to date with the snapshots.
Thanks,

No PCMCIA Support?
I see that the ext3 kernel being used is an enterprise kernel which
doesn''t build the PCMCIA modules generally. Any chance of getting the
SRPM so that testing on a laptop can actually be possible? It''s too
much fun to have a laptop and just hit the power button and not have to
fsck:)

Ext3 step by step installation procedure
Hello!
I'm using i868 (Pentium III) machine running Windows 2000 and running Linux,
installed on dedicated partition, in parallel via VMWare. Linux config is
RedHat 7.0 (kernel )
As I'm pretty new to Linux, I'd like to know exact procedure how to install
ext3 filesystem support (also which packages do I need). My kernel config is
as follows:

Software RAID & Ext3 v0.0.6b
I've just set up a brand new system with software raid1 (in degraded mode)
with one IDE 20GB drive, using kernel 2.2.19pre16 with ext3 0.0.6b.
It's split like this..
32MB /dev/hda1 /boot
2GB /dev/hda2 /
~18GB /dev/hda3 /home
all partitions are marked as 0xfd (autostart raid) with the patches from
http://people.redhat.com/mingo/raid-patches for 2.2.17. And I've made all the

Oops when using ext3 with quota
Hi Stephen,
I posted a similar report on linux-kernel a month ago, but didn't hear
anything new from you. So I try it again in this list, this time with
some additional info:
Using a stock 2.2.17 kernel with NFS-patches and ext-0.0.3b I can
reliably lockup the kjournald when extracting two or three tar.gz files
(e.g. kernel tar-balls) onto a ext3 filesystem with activated quotas.

Fwd: Re: Swap: create or not?
I think I wrote not very clearly.
I say ''swap in domU will save in case lag or little mistake with
balloon''. If course, there is no any kind of ballooning for dom0.
Right now we running pretty much VMs for our cloud services and we use
heavy memory management (it grabs and gives memory with lag less then
second depends on usage in customers VM). And we have some statistics

sysvol replication and posix uid / gid mapping
Hi,
I just found out the hard way that sysvol replication with rsync stoped
working when I activated winbind (libnss-winbind actually) on my primary
AD DC.
Originally I hadn't planed to activate winbind on the primary AD DC
since that machine was not meant to provide any shares.
What I hadn't thought of was the fact that GPOs reside as files on the
sysvol share and thus are subject

Quotas?
Hi Stephen,
it's me again with a problem report about quotas and ext3...
I'm not quite sure whether you tried to resolve the quota problems yet,
but since I read in the changelog of 0.0.5e that you included some quota
specific fixes I decided to give a try (again).
And once again: Bad news.
Still lockups, reliable reproducible.
But this time I have a little backtrace for you of two

can't access samba share from xp
Hello,
I am running slackware 9 and I have also updated samba to version 2.2.8a
from the slackware security update. I can access my xp box with no
problems from my linux box but I cannot access my linux box from my xp
box. I have been on several forums and IRC channels and no one seems to
have much insight into my problem, someone recommended trying to post my
problem here.

[Bridge] Clarification regarding device matches in bridge-netfilter
Hi folks,
in 2.4 kernels, device matching for bridged packets was done with
iptables -i/-o. Since 2.6, I was used to use -m physdev here.
In 2.6.18, This seems to be more complicated. At least the filter/INPUT
chain now doesn't match with -m physdev --physdev-in anymore, but
FORWARD and OUTPUT does. I also read the note that -m phydev is now
deprecated for non-bridged traffic.
Does this

Setup and configure file shares with Windows ACLs
When reading the wiki page about setting up new shares there is some
information missing.
https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Setup_and_configure_file_shares_with_Windows_ACLs
The information I am missing most here is which posix.1 ACLs to set
after creating the shares directory.
There is only
# mkdir -p /srv/samba/Demo/
but on my system that will create a directory that is owned by root:root

I have recently installed wine (Wine 20040213) on SuSE 9.1 (from
RPM) and I am trying to get a few windows application to run.
My procedure is as described in the wine user guide: copy the
"app" directory from original windows to the wine "Program Files"
directory, run "wine app", see what DLL is missing, copy that one
