Managing users and home dirs
For those of you using virtual users, and SQL, how are you managing your users and their home dirs ? That is, what process do you use for adding/deleting users, creating their home dirs etc ? I suppose it's easy enough to do manually, inserting rows in the database, creating dirs, chown/chmod yada yada, but there must be a better way to do it ... If you're doing dovecot replication then it

Current thinking on backups ?
I run a pair of dovecot servers for personal small domains with several layers of backup in place ... - The two dovecot servers replicate to each via a Tinc vpn mesh. That gives email resiliency. - All mail is replicated via offlineimap to a 3rd server over that Tinc vpn. It's on the mesh, it has space, so why not ? - All mail is replicated as well as via mbsync to a zfs dataset on my

Replication with virtual users and static userdb possible ?
Is it possible to get replication working in a virtual user setup that uses a static userdb ? My environment is fairly simple and typical - there's a single system user (vmail) that owns all the home dirs (/var/mail/domain.com/user). The virtual users (userid at domain.com:secretpassword) are kept in a single file (/var/mail/domain.com/PASSWD) that's unique per domain, and referenced as a

Problems with Samba and Windows 2003 Active Domain Server
Can somebody with experience making a RedHat Fedora Core 3 server with Samba installed work in a Windows 2003 Active Domain please give me some pointers? I have a small installation with one Windows 2003 Server running as a domain controller for about 10 Windows XP machines. This is working just fine. I decided that I wanted to add a RedHat Fedora Core 3 server as a Mail server, running Cyrus IMAP

Valid users question
Hi, I've a question about the syntax of the valid users option. Any help is greatly appreciated! Here is the Background: samba 3.0.4 Linux as Domain Member Active Directory, not in Native Mode Compiler opions: --with-winbind --with-pam --with-smbmount The goal is to authenticate via the Windows Domain and allow access via Windows groups. The syntax in my smb.conf looks like this:

ocfs2 filesystem seems out of sync
Hi there I recently installed an OCFS2 filesystem on our FC-SAN. Everything seemed to work fine and I could read & write the filesystem from both servers that are mounting it. After a while though, writes coming from one node do not appear on the other node and vice versa. I am not sure what's causing this, and not very experienced at debugging filesystems. If anybody has any

Current thinking on backups ?
Hi, What are people doing for backups ? My current process is LVM snapshot and backup from that to NFS share. But there seems to be hints around the internet that people use/abuse "doveadm backup" for backup purposes even though it seems its original intention was for transferring mailboxes between dovecot instances. Assuming its ok to "doveadm backup" to an NFS share, is it

Dovecot - Upgrade Solr 7.7.2 to 8.4.1
Hi, thanks for your answer. I confirm, mitigate this issue is very very easy. There are other issues with high severity for example CVE-2019-17558. Description: Apache Solr 5.0.0 to Apache Solr 8.3.1 are vulnerable to a Remote Code Execution through the VelocityResponseWriter I think for this issue there is only a solution, upgrade Solr to 8.4. It's Correct? So, with Dovecot is it possible

OT: Large corporate email systems - Exchange vs open source *nix based
Hello, There has been some whispers about considering migrating our mail systems to Exchange Server. I want to try to nip this in the bud. I would like to ask for some help with providing some kind of comparison of large(r) commercial companies use of email systems... specifically, those using Microsoft Exchange Server, vs those using open source Linux/Unix based systems, including even

NT user token: (NULL) what does this mean?
I've just noticed this in the log file for a user that cannot connect. It simply repeats over and over in the log. What the user sees is that he maps to the share, then gets a message "access denied" He can however connect to any subdirectory beneath the share. Weird. The setup is samba 3.0.4 on Redhat compiled with windbind as a member server Connecting to a Win2k domain using
