Logging logins with preexec and Samba/LDAP
Hi all,
I had the following line in my smb.conf with which to log access to the
home share when users logged in:
preexec = /bin/echo \"%u logged in to %m at %T\" >>
/var/log/samba/logons.log
Since updating to LDAP however, it's stopped working and I suspect that smbldap cant handle the % substitutions for user, machine and time. Has anyone else run into this problem? If

Samba4, MS CAL and Windows Server as domain member
Hi everyone,
I have a licencing question : do one need to buy CAL for every user in a Samba4 domain when there is a Windows Server as a domain member, knowing that the Windows server will be accessed using SMB by Windows workstations?
As per http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/using_samba/ch01.html and many other web sites, one of the main advantage of samba is that no user CALs are required. And I

Migrate BACK to WINDOWS -> Talk me out of it QUICK
Not thinking about migrating back due to issues, it is more due to
implementation needs and a little situation I have been wrestling with
with for a bit now, and would love some feedback
First a little history:
We currently have 10 locations connected via a dedicated 1/2 T-1.
Last year I migrated from a WINNT domain to a Samba/LDAP domain. It
has been running great. Basically did this for

Windows license on Xen 3.3
Hi all, I would like to run 10 x Windows 2003 server(enterprise edition)
guests VM on top of my Xen3.3 box. Each guest vm need 5 terminal service
connections.
I am not sure how to buy the guest license. I think 2 possible ways, can
anyone give some idea to me:
1. buy 10 x Enterprise edition license and buy 5 TS CAL to each window
license
2. buy 1 x datacenter edition license

Looking for successful implementation of Samba + W2K3 AD
Dear Samba users,
I am desperate to know whether there is any successful implementation of
Samba 3.0.x as member server of Microsoft Windows 2003 server running
Active Directory.
I have in production the said architecture and it is giving me all sort of
connection problems to SAMBA shares during peak hours when users are
numbered as many as 500+ concurrently. When there are only few users,

Grouping by 3 variable and renaming groups
ALCON
I'm trying to figure out how to rename groups in a data frame after groups
by selected variabels. I am using the dplyr library to group my data by 3
variables as follows
# group by lat (StoreX)/long (StoreY)
priceStore <- LapTopSales[,c(4,5,15,16)]
priceStore <- priceStore[complete.cases(priceStore), ] # keep only non NA
records
priceStore_Grps <- priceStore %>%

ZFS core contributor nominations
The time has come to review the current Contributor and Core contributor
grants for ZFS. Since all of the ZFS core contributors grants are set
to expire on 02-24-2009 we need to renew the members that are still
contributing at core contributor levels. We should also add some new
members to both Contributor and Core contributor levels.
First the current list of Core contributors:

Windows XP slow access to network places shortcut?
All,
In winxp & 2k for that matter, you have the ability of saving shortcuts to network places in the my network places. When some of my users try to access these shortcuts(to a samba share) in winxp, it takes a horrendous amount of time for the folders to populate the screen. Especially when viewing in windows explorer with the folders view button depressed. Under tools>folder

rsync 2.6.2 crash
OK, I will do that next. I just tried 2.6.1 on both ends, and it died in a similar fashion.

Grouping by 3 variable and renaming groups
Hello,
See if this is it:
priceStore_Grps$StoreID <- paste("Store",
seq_len(nrow(priceStore_Grps)), sep = "_")
Hope this helps,

Converting passwords to Linux (NIS)
On our network, some users authenticate against a linux server running NIS,
while some authenticate against a Windows NT machine via Samba. We want to
dispense with the Windows machine (who wouldn't!).
Ideally, I'd like to preserve the users' current passwords. Does the Samba
suite include tools that allow this? Thank you for your help!

New to the list ... Looking for any recommendations inre: VMWare Vs. Xen
I'm new to the CentOS arena and I'm curious as to what virtualization
products are preferred?
The two main ones that I know of are Xen and VMWare. VMWare seems to be
the most capable inre: number and size of vm's allowed. When looking at
Xen it appears that since Citrix acquired them the free version is
cripple-ware and is very restrictive.
Thanks in advance for any information.

Grouping by 3 variable and renaming groups
Hello,
Sorry, but I think my first answer is wrong.
You probably want something along the lines of
sp <- split(priceStore_Grps, priceStore_Grps$StorePC)
res <- lapply(seq_along(sp), function(i){
sp[[i]]$StoreID <- paste("Store", i, sep = "_")
sp[[i]]
})
res <- do.call(rbind, res)
row.names(res) <- NULL

replacing microsoft file server with linux samba server ?
This is a question about microsoft license fees for desktop connections.
If a microsoft file/print server is replaced with with a linux samba server
or if the company starts out with a linux samba server, how would
the desktop connections be monitored for the purpose of microsoft
collecting connection fees? When using the linux samba server
is there even a need to consider this scenario?

Is it possible to store XP Profiles on Samba 3.0.2 ?
Hi all,
Can you use Samba to store an XP Pro profile?
I'm running Samba 3.0.2a (compiled from source) on Solaris 9.
Compiled it against OpenLDAP 2.1.30 and MIT Kerberos 1.3.3 (both
compiled from source from fresh downloads today).
Am now trying to get Windows XP Pro to store profiles on to this box.
The smbd and nmbd seem to run fine.
Every time XP Pro goes to create a user's

samba and NIS?
Hi,
I have a few questions. My goal is to run
NIS and samba so I have a central point of passwd control
and just one place to change passwords. I will eventually
have 5 samba servers so this is quite important to me as
I don't want to have to change passwords and setup passwords
on 5 servers when changing or adding new users.
Can this be done? So that if a user changes his password
