Problems attaching new XP box to samba domain esp. with Roaming Profiles
OK.... I don't know if these two are connected but they feel like they may be.... I've just installed a new machine XP (SP2 -prob b) machine on an OEM disk. It seems to be unable to join my Samba controlled domain properly. The Samba version is 3.0.7 - yes I know it's old but I don't want to upgrade unless I have to since there appear to be a number of dependencies to upgrade as

Question about world read permissions on system level files
All, I need to trim the world read permissions from the system sensitive files. I know that it would be safe to trim the permissions from many of the configuration files in /etc. But I was not sure if I could safely tighten the permissions form other system files. Does any one know of any documentation on this. Or can any one tell me if it is safe to trim world read permissions from the system

2k and 9x connect and print, XP won't
Good day! I am running Samba3 on a Mandrake 9.1 box. Right now, I have "security = user", but am not using any password authentication yet. I have 95 and 98 computers that can reach the shares available and print to the installed printer, and even a Windows 2000 user can do all of this. However, an XP computer I have can't go there. I double-click "DRAKEJAX" (the

samba, RH7.3 and windows NT/2K/XP problem?
Hi, We have a couple of RH7.3 systems. Both have samba installed and they were running well before. Now, one system's samba shows a problem after the system rebooting yesterday. Samba is still running and all windows 95, 98 users can access this RH7.3 system without any problem, but windows NT/2000/XP users cannot access it now. Before the rebooting, all windows (including nt/2k/xp)

Windows ME / 2K / XP Printing.
Hi, Our department has succesfully been using samba as a print server for a host of 95/98/NT4 boxes for some time now. However, we're recently started to introduce ME / 2k / XP machines and are having problems. Basically, under ME, 2k and XP after adding a printer as a network printer, I recieve an error message along the lines of 'Unable to Connect to print queue' , 'Unable to

[PATCH] chain.c32: add support for booting the Recovery Console of Windows NT/2K/XP
The following patch for chain.c32 adds support to boot the Recovery Console of Windows NT/2K/XP. Normally when you want to boot the recovery console, you need to patch "cmdcons\0" into the bootsectorof the partition (8 bytes starting at 0x3 (4th byte)). We can do this patching in memory: strcpy((char *) 0x7c03, "cmdcons"); To boot the recovery console with chain.c32:

Multi-user databases (DOS application) in WIndows XP and Windows 2k file locking problem
Hello all! I discover a strange thing. We use and develop DOS financial accounting application, written on Xbase (formerly known as Clipper). This application agressively uses of file sharing and locking (byte-range and all possible for DOS combinations), creates and uses huge amount of index (NTX) and Dbase III (DBF) files on network shared resource. Network clients are Windows 98se,

Okay, new question - dealing w/ logging in restrictions (controller?)
Hey all, so if you read my previous thing about nested routes - I''m just not going to do with them anymore. Anyway, so my controller has a before_filter on the edit action; which checks to see if the current post''s user, is the same as the currently logged in user, if true then they can edit, otherwise not. def check_user if current_user.login != @post.user.login

two printers: one works ok in w9x/2k, other printer unavailable in Win98 BUT ok in w2k!
Hi all, I try to explain my strange Samba problem: I've done a linuxbox with Mandrake 8.2 distro; installed Samba 2.2 packages and two printers attached via parallel port: one works with the motherboard built-in parallel port, the other is connected via a pci parallel port card. Both works fine on win2000 clients (and on the linuxbox, too :); on windows 98 clients, both printers are

Samba PDC, Win9x, 2k, XP domain logon problem
I hope this doc below helps out. But from what I have seen it looks like you created the machines accounts but did not create the smbpasswd for the machine accounts. See docs below Machine accounts: the manual approach As noted, Samba will not allow you to add an entry to the smbpasswd file (user or machine) unless there is a existing UNIX account for that user. So the first step is to create an

Win2K cannot retrieve print driver, XP is okay
Hi all, I'm having trouble persuading Windows 2000 to find the print driver on a CUPS/Samba 3.0.20 server. The whole system has been working perfectly with Windows XP clients for the last couple of months, but we have a few Windows 2000 PCs/servers that need to have the printers installed, and when double-clicking on a shared printer the Win2K machines are saying that the print server

Windows 2k/XP and roaming profiles
Hi I'm finding it takes ages to download a roaming profile from the server when I log into Win2k or XP. A 4Mb profiles typically takes about 2 minutes (and 2 minutes to write back when I log out). I did a test and copied the profile directory from the server to my PC. Running under Win98 takes 1-2 minutes. Under 2K/XP it takes nearly 5 minutes. However, a single file of 4Mb only takes about

Samba PDC + 2K/XP
Hey, I am just wondering how you enforce security (such as permissions) on local workstations while running Samba 2.2.x as a PDC with 2K/XP workstations? As some of us don't have or want 2000 Server to enforce things like policies etc... how do you all do it. E.g. If we want 'Administrator' to have access to all start menu etc... yet standard users to have only programs, no settings
