Problem Restarting Samba3
I have Samba 3.0.0 installed on Mandrake 9.2. I also have Samba 2.8.8a installed per instructions from Mandrake -- but I do NOT start Samba 2.8.8a automatically. In fact, I don't use it at all. Maybe I should uninstall the Samba 2.8.8a rpm??? I will update to 3.0.1 as soon as an rpm is available from Mandrake. Anyway, I have a problem when I try to add a new share to my smb.conf file. I

samba 3 mandrake rpms...where is net tool?
I installed the RPMS from samba web site for Mandrake 9.1. Configuration is weird as things are labeled smbd3 or winbind3... Testparm runs against /etc/samba/smb.conf yet swat configures the smb.conf in a different location...hmm.... But really my problem is joining the AD domain as a member server. I can't locate the net tool. How is this done? How does testparm know to test against

s3.0.0: problem getting usernames for a DOMAIN from win2000 and winXP's user configurator
Hi, we use a samba3.0.0b3 as PDC here. It's running smoothly, but one problem persists. When I'm trying to add new users to a (local) windows group "administrators" and select the DOMAIN instead of the computer name, it waits a few second and then reports in gray: "No objects are available in this location. Select another location." this is in the logs: PANIC:

ntlogon.conf
Hey Everyone... I'm hoping this is an easy one. I am using the ntlogon scripts that come with the samba examples (ntlogon.py and ntlogon.conf). It's working fine, except for one thing. I'm trying to set entries up for the groups "Domain Admins" or other groups with spaces in the name. The example that comes with it shows ... [Group-admins] I tried the following...

Samba (2.2.8a or 3.0.2a) + WinXP not updating roaming profiles on logout
I have a linux box running samba configured as my PDC with roaming profiles. Everything was running great until I upgraded to WinXP instead of Win2K. Now, when I log out of my XP session, my profile doesn't get uploaded to the server. The local copy remains in effect until I reboot. When I log out, the following message gets sent to the event logger: [quote] Windows has detected that

SeBackupPrivilege
We're using Samba 3.0.21a-1 on a CentOS 4.2 server (kernel 2.6.9-22.0.2.ELsmp); everything works more or less fine, it's functioning as the PDC with an OpenLDAP back end (setup essentially straight from the Idealx.org playbook), etc. We're trying to mount Windows shares to back them up, and getting "permission denied" errors when trying to read certain files from those

w2ksrv, and a samba based netlogon?
Is it possible to have a windows 2000 server in AD mode, with a samba server as a domain member, and have the roaming profiles and netlogon stuff all happen on the samba server? So: W2ksrv as ADC. Samba box is joined to AD on the w2ksrv box. We then add a user to the w2ksrv box, and set up the profile to load from \\sambaserver\homes\profile\ and to run the logon script from

Samba 3.0 issues with mapped drives properties
Mandrake 9.1 Samba 3.0, windows2000 pro sp4. I finally got Samba 3.0 working thanks to G?mes G?za. Now I am having another issue as outlined below: 1)There are 2 users on the Linux pc, markw (regular user) and root. Both have valid samba passwords. 2)I have a share called: [data] path = /test valid users = markw, root read only = No browseable = yes 3)I am able to map the share with the user

Samba PDC
Does Samba3 require windows machine accounts? I need to have users authenticate to a Samba PDC and be able to run logon scripts when authenticated, BUT NOT have to have machine accounts for every user be setup. In other words, can the user authenticate without his/her machine being part of the Domain? Thanks, Rich

At 4 a.m. it finally worked...Samba 3, interdomain trust, ldap, winbind
I spent a solid two weeks trying to make a RH 9 with Samba 3 PDC operate the way I wanted it to in a domain that includes an NT 4.0 PDC. Early this morning, the NT user dogbreath belonging to the NT group mongrels was able to log into the NT PDC, map to the big_ugly_dogs share on the Samba machine, copy a file there, open it in OpenOffice 1.1.0, edit it, save it and then delete it. All of this was

SaMBa raises 10x the traffic but only when _executing_, pizza offered
Customer is running a Delphi app talking to an MS-SQL-Server through Microsoft ADO. The SQL stuff is reasonably chatty but not a problem. Whenever the program is run or a significant feature is used, it generates much SMB traffic -- roughly 10x as much from a SaMBa (3.1 or 3.0) server as from a W2k or w2k3 server. As you might imagine, this makes the app run very slowly. This happens with
