setup_new_vc_session error message on samba-3.4.8/solaris10
folks, we're running samba-3.4.8 (--with-krb5=/usr/local/lib --with-ads --with-ldap) under solaris_10; in the past week we've seen an issue where the number of smbd processes begins to far exceed the number of connections (as reported by smbstatus). when this occurs, we see the server in question stop answering new requests (ssh, smb, nfs) though old requests are honored and system logs

unable to join a NT4 Domain since 3.0.28a

login processes from attacks staying for hours
I'm in the process of rolling out new setups with dovecot on CentOS 5.2 and I notice that dovecot doesn't handle the brute-force attacks too nice. I reduced the limit a bit to some reasonable looking value: login_max_processes_count = 32 to stop them earlier and the number of processes stops at that figure when an attack happens. However, it stays at this count for hours although the

questions from a 10GbE driver author
Hi, I maintain a driver for a 10GbE nic which supports multiple hardware tx/rx rings. We can steer rx packets into rings using the "standard" NDIS6 Toeplitz hashing on TCP port numbers, IP addresses, etc. We can also steer packets based on MAC address. Would this NIC be considered to be capable of supporting crossbow? Also, can crossbow do things like steer outgoing packets to the

ISCI Network Hang - Lun becomes unavailable
I am sharing out ZFS ISCSI luns to my Mac. When copying large files, the network will hang in the middle of the transfer and the LUN will become unavailable until I plumb the NIC. This issue appears to only occur only when I am reading files (ie..syncing an ipod) and not writing (I''m not 100% sure though). When I snoop the interface I notice a bunch of ARP lookups. Any ideas? Thanks in

Samba w/Winbind HA cluster
We are planning to build an HA cluster of samba servers, using winbind to authenticate against an Active Directory domain. The problem I see with this, is that the Winbind uid mappings will not necessarily be the same on both nodes in the HA cluster. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get the winbind uid and gid mappings to match on 2 separate servers? Alex Laslavic Havertys Tech

NEG_CONN_CACHE questions
I've tried searching manuals and wiki, but I can't seem to find any specifics about NEG_CONN_CACHE entries other than 'idmap negative cache time' option in smb.conf, which refers to SID/UID/GID queries and not unavailable DCs. Specifically the issue I've ran into recently is that with 'winbind max domain connections' set to 10 I saw Winbind had single active connection

Network tuning for working with very old Solaris
G'day. I am trying to get a very old Solaris 5.7 server to ftp data to my updated CentOS 5.4 server but the Solaris box keeps losing networking after sending some data. I can't ping the Solaris box from any of the servers on my network. Could this be related to a much newer (modern) TCP/IP stack in Linux and TCP options? If so, does anyone have any suggestions for how I can tune the

Reclaiming transmit descriptors by NIC drivers with Crossbow new scheduling
The following is mainly a capture of parts of multiple off-line discussions within members of the Crossbow team (Gopi, Thiru, Roamer, May-Lin, Thirumailai, Nitin, KB, ...), I thought I''d open it up to other participants. Crossbow''s core scheduling involves switching a NIC (or individual Rx rings on the NIC) to polling mode. The receive interrupt will become not only rarer,

remove revalidate_disk()
Hi Jens, this series removes the revalidate_disk() function, which has been a really odd duck in the last years. The prime reason why most people use it is because it propagates a size change from the gendisk to the block_device structure. But it also calls into the rather ill defined ->revalidate_disk method which is rather useless for the callers. So this adds a new helper to just
