SAMBA, NIS and NFS
Hi All Some background first I have been asked to set up an environment involving three machines 1. A windows 2000 client 2. A Solaris 8 E450 / NIS client 3. An SGI IRIX fileserver/ NIS server holding user home directories The E450 NFS mounts the SGI and users have their home directories on the SGI. Help with nis password changes
I normally try not to ask questions until I have done as much research as possible, and again, this is the case... Just after I thought I had my RH5 samba/nis server working fine, I come across the inability to update nis passwords. >From the server as root: passwd guest1 Changing password for user guest1. New UNIX password: Retype new UNIX password: NIS password could not be changed.

Generating password string in /var/nis/passwd with Perl
Hello, in our network we have AD (Win 2003) for user authentication under Windows and NIS (CentOS 5.2) for same under Linux: # rpm -qf /var/yp filesystem-2.4.0-1.el5.centos ypbind-1.19-8.el5 yp-tools-2.9-0.1 ypserv-2.19-3 I have written a CGI Script to add new users both to AD and NIS and also to create the home dirs at our NetApp-Filer. Unfortunately some steps still have to be made by hand

nis password file -> smbpasswd?
ive got several hundred user accounts in NIS that i need to get into the smbpasswd file. since samba doesn't actually use NIS, but can only be in sync with it, what is the best way to get all these passwords into smbpaswd? I'd hate to have to have all users re-enter their passwords... anyone done this before? thanks in advance, alex ---

PDC, NIS and password sync.
Hi. I have for a while been trying to get my samba 2.2.1a PDC to be a NIS master and still maintain the password sync feature, without any luck. Now I made something that seems to work - but I would like to get your input to see if what I do is ok or it is something I should'nt do. 1: Samba uses passwd to sync the password (not yppasswd) 2: cron runs make in /var/yp every 15 minutes to

Samba and WindowsXP
Hello all. I'm writing to inquire about two particular problems with Samba and Windows XP that have me perplexed. Problem #1: I have a Solaris9 Samba 2.2.5 server, which acts as a print server to all the other UNIX nodes on the network. This works fine, however, when I print from WindowsXP, instead of getting the actual printout, I get the PostScript source code, pages and pages of it.

question NIS password authenication
Fellow Samba Folks, I am trying to setup Samba version 2.2.8a. I would like to authenticate the users with their NIS password and not use a smbpasswd file on the Samba Server. I also want to use the encrypt password feature. The clients will be using XP or Win2K os. Is this possible or do I have to find a Windows Domain Server. Dear all, I have a NIS server which shares a database of users between some computers (nodes exactly) and I would like that, on the first login, the user changes its password. So, on the NIS server I have made: chage -d 0 USER Then: # cd /var/yp # make On the NIS server I have: chage -l USER Last password change : password must be changed Password expires

Problem with yppasswd ans openssh on Irix
Hi, I compiled openssh 2.1.1p1 on Irix 6.2 with MIPS 7.2.1.2m compiler. All works fine except the yppasswd command from Irix (it's no NIS-problem, same with rlogin works): Logged in with 'ssh machine -l user1' # who user1 ttyq0 Jun 19 15:17 (xxxxx.iwr.uni-heidelberg.de) # ypcat passwd |grep user1 user1:xxxxxxxxxxxxx:1535:1500:User1:/usr/people/user1:/bin/tcsh # ypcat passwd |grep

Samba, pam, NIS and password changes
Hi I have a customer who is having a problem with Samba password changes. The samba server (server12) is set up as a PDC for a WIndows domain with XP clients. Samba is Version 3.0.26a-SerNet-RedHat. OS is Centos 3.9. There is also a separate mail server (server56) running FC6 which uses NIS for user validation. NIS server is running on server12. Generally speaking, everything is working and

nis passwords
Has anyone come up with a creative way to us nis passwords for both encripted and non-encripted passwords? Or a way to convert the nis password table to the smbpassword file, without having each user to login and change their password? LDAP-based NIS server .vs. NIS migration to LDAP?
Greetings! I tried to post this question to openldap group but somehow my post never showed up there. Anyway, I built PDC using Samba3 and OPENLDAP and now like to integrade NIS service to it. I searched the net there are quite a few guides on how to replace NIS with LDAP. However, in our environment, we have almost all sorts of Unix platforms, e.g. Linux (mainly Redhat), Solaris, HPUX, AIX,

Converting passwords to Linux (NIS)
On our network, some users authenticate against a linux server running NIS, while some authenticate against a Windows NT machine via Samba. We want to dispense with the Windows machine (who wouldn't!). Ideally, I'd like to preserve the users' current passwords. Does the Samba suite include tools that allow this? Thank you for your help!

FW: Samba authentication against a windows 2000 domain.
Hi all, I've got an authentication issue with SAMBA as a member server in a Win 2000 domain, Basically I need to authenticate users against the domain. Unfortunately my clients are not all domain members so they send <something>\username not <domainname>\<username>. I need to get samba to replace whatever with the domainname or to get the clients to send the right

nis homedir
I would be grateful if anybody could supply some more information on the 'nis homedir' option (Samba 1.9.17a4). We have home directories spread over several Samba hosts. Although they can be accessed via 'amd' from any other server it would be a great benefit to be able to guarantee that all connections were made directly to the correct server. The man page looks promising but I

Shorewall and NIS
I was trying to get NIS working today and it seemed that Shorewall was blocking the NIS traffic as the ypbind worked fine on the NIS master (the shorewall server) however a client could not connect as it could not find the domain server. I stopped shorewall and tried again however it still would not connect which should eliminate shorewall. I am not sure that I have NIS set up correctly
