Phantom workgroup
I have a Samba 3.0.4 server configured as a PDC. NetBIOS name of the
server is "SERVER"; name of the workgroup is "AEC".
Problem is that there's now a phantom workgroup called "SERVER" when I
try to browse the network. Since there's no clients configured in this
workgroup, any attempts to browse this workgroup fail.
When I attempt to use User Manager for

Server name appears as domain name
I've got a Samba 3.0.4 server running on RedHat 8.0 as a PDC. It's the
only domain controller on the network, and the only WINS server on the
network.
The problem is, when I browse the network neighborhood, I see the
NetBIOS name of the server ("SERVER") appear as a workgroup/domain
(though there are no hosts listed in this phantom domain). It also
appears as a computer under

Upgrading from workgroup to domain: experiences & gotchas (LONG)
I've decided to share my experiences with the list in hopes that it will
help someone else doing something similar avoid the problems I
experienced, and hopefully, have a better experience.
Here's the scope of my project:
Original installation:
- Samba 2.2.x series server
- Workgroup security (read: local security, not domain security)
- no domain controller

Problems with password policy in Samba 3.0.4
Have an issue with password policy in Samba 3.0.4 with tdbsam password
backend on RedHat 8.0. This issue was observed with an up-to-date
Windows XP client, NT's SRVTOOLS on Windows 2000.
I can set password policy (expiration, length, etc.) using usrmgr.exe
from the Windows NT Server Tools. After setting policy, when I execute
'pdbedit -Lv someuser', it does not display the correct

Changing SID on Windows boxes (plug)
This sounds like an advertisement, but I've got nothing to gain. Just
thought you might like to know about this.
If you're cloning a bunch of Windows boxes, you'll have a problem with
SID's... they'll all be the same. That's a bad thing. Maybe you have a need
to change a SID... perhaps a dual-boot box where you want the computer names
and IP addresses to be the same. This

HOW TO: Migrating users' locally-stored profiles from one domain or workgroup to a new domain
Migrating Users Profiles When Changing Domain Affiliation: A Primer
I. Introduction
NOTE: This applies to Windows NT-based systems with locally-stored user
profiles. Windows 9x and Me do not manage user profiles in the same way.
Quite often we find the need to change a workstation's affiliation,
either from a workgroup (that is, the workstation is not in a domain
environment) to a domain,

complete newbie sid problems
Hi,
I'm trying to set up samba with ldap authorization on a windows network.
I have samba running on one linux host, and openldap on another. I have
used smbldap-tools to populate my directory and used smbldap-useradd to
create an initial testuser on the samba host. I can ssh in to the samba
host as the testuser ok, and get in to the testuser directory (ie. there
are no permission

SAMBA4: pdbedit not changing SID
Since I don't seem to be having any luck with the classicupgrade, I
decided to try starting from scratch and then adding users.
I ran the command:
/usr/local/samba/bin/samba-tool domain provision --realm=<my realm> \
--domain=<mydomain> --adminpass 'mypass' --server-role=dc \
--dns-backend=BIND9_DLZ
Then I tried both adding and changing users. In neither case can I

Urgent, Security: Privilege Escalation in 3.0.24?
Hi list,
we have spotted a serious problem with our Samba
(Debian version 3.0.24-6) on linux 2.4.31, ext2 with ACLs enabled.
We use "hide unreadable = yes" to reduce clutter for our
users. Today we noticed that with this option enabled any
linux client can access and read *all* directories under the
share, even directories that are owned by root and set to 0700.
No ACLs are set on the

Samba users profiles directory failing to mount in windows client
I am having some issues with Samba with roaming profiles running on Ubuntu
server. When a user logs in they get prompted with an error:

Windows cannot locate the server copy of your roaming profile and is
attempting to log you
on with your local profile. Changes to the profile will not be copied to the
server when
you logoff. Possible causes of this error include

Samba PDC + Openldap (no database connection established after reboot)
Hi, all. I really need your helps in determing what I did wrong. I have
been trying to setup Samba PDC (not using TLS at this initial stage yet) by
hand on SLES 9.1 and did not use YAST because somehow it just did not work.
I followed all the steps from the "The Linux Samba-OpenLDAP Howto (1.10)
from IDEALX.org) and Chapter 5 Making Happy Users from the book and a bunch

pdbedit and root SID/RID
Hi
I've been reading every documentation available for creating smb domain
groups and users, mapping domain groups and users... still learning...
Every document I read states that root should be modified to RID 500, by
running ' pdbedit -U `net getlocalsid | cut -d ":" -f2 | tr -d ' '`-500
-u root -r', but I always get root to RID 1000 and its domain group RID

Unable to update SID using pdbedit
Since I have had trouble getting the net rpc vampire command to
properly migrate passwords, I have been looking into stripping down
the net rpc samdump results into a smbpasswd backend file, then
importing from there into my tdbsam.
The first problem I ran into is that the samdump produces RID values
from the domain, whereas I need it to represent UIDs that already
exist. No problem, since my

LDAP PDC migration gone wrong.
Hi All,
I have a problem following the migration of my PDC's backend from tdbsam
to LDAP. We started out with a PDC called SMB1 which ran with a tdbsam
backend. I used pdbedit to convert it to LDAP and built a new server
onto which the LDIF file was loaded. Samba was then setup to use the
LDAP server as a backend. So far so good, Samba runs against LDAP and I
was able to add 60 new XP

Samba + OpenLDAP: LDAP server is running but could not respond to a search request
Hi, all. I am trying to set up SAMBA PDC with OpenLDAP using smbldap-tools
from IDEALX. This is on a SLES 9 and I had run the latest online update as
well as SP1 and SP2 for it.
At this point smb is off and ldap is running.
I have gotten up to where I needed to test for:
ldapsearch -x -b "dc=sample,dc=com" "(ObjectClass=*)"
# extended LDIF

# LDAPv3

Hello guys,

preparation of migration of users form Samba PDC with passdb.tdb backend
ot LDAP backend, i need to be 100% clear on it.
I can't find the reference to it anywhere, so if anyone can point me in
the right way ..?
What is confusing for me? I'll explain on example:

Samba PDC Server Local SID, Domain SID, and GROUP RID Question
Hi,
I have a question regarding an issue I am having with our new
Samba PDC. We used to be running an NT domain controller and about
two months ago, I made the transition to a Debian linux box running
Samba. The PDC is currently running Samba 3.0.8.
My samba PDC is using the tdbsam backend and, for the most part
is working flawlessly. However, when using smbpasswd to add samba accounts,

User Group SID behavior has changed from 21b to 23c
I am using LDAP as my backend. I have 6 PDC's running Samba 3.0.21b,
each domain has a different SID. I store all user, groups, and machine
accounts in one LDAP database. So that when I create a user once, all
domains can see the user. This keeps me from having to create a user
account on each domain for cross domain file sharing.
The behavior for Domains running Samba 3.0.21b is a follows.
