Samba hanging from time to time
I am having some trouble with Samba. It was working fine on an old server with 3.0.21.
Now I have updated to 3.0.28 (via 3.0.25) and a bigger fatter faster server.
There are two problems. Firstly the new server seems slower than the old one, and some users
are experiencing intermittent data loss via MS apps such as Word or Excell crashing.
The system runs on Arch Linux, with a slightly

Weird "Share violation"
Hi all!
I've got an OS X Server (10.3.7) running the built-in version of Samba
(3 something).
I've got one sharepoint set up ("Apps") with 2 DOS applications in it.
One is an old DOS version of Q&A (4, if it really matters). The other
is a custom application that is text based. (.bat files, for the most
part. A couple of complied pieces done in Turbo Basic.) All

FileMaker lock problem
We have a customer system running Slackware Linux (kernel 2.4.25) and
Samba. The customer was running Samba 2.2.8 but we recently upgraded them
to
Samba 3.0.13.
The customer has a FileMaker database on a public share. Before the
upgrade, the customer was able to have multiple concurrent access to the
database. After the upgrade, only the first user to access the database
was successful.

weird loop selecting print driver from w2k client w/ samba 2.2.5 w/ patches
After uploading the print drivers from w2k and pressing OK or Apply...
or selecting this printer from the uploaded drivers and pressing OK and
Apply, the printer properties window hourglasses and my machine logs
fill up with the messages below. The general idea is, it opens the 15
files that were uploaded for the drivers. Then reopens and closes each
one, then closes them all. This process

specific client machines can't write / execute others can and oplock causes panic
Hi all hope you can help,
I have a mixed XP / 2K client deployment, and the samba server is running as a PDC. On most machines I have no problems, but on 2 2K machines and 1 XP machine I'm getting the same behaviour every time I either try to write the file or execute a file, no matter whether I log on to the domain or which userid I log on as. I'm also running debian woody 2.4.19, and

issues with cifs mount
I have a samba 3.0.14a PDC on FreeBSD 6.0-RELEASE.
With pam_mount on Ubuntu 5.10 users have their home
mounted with mount.cifs.
I have 2 issues with this setting.
First with the evolution email client, when I pop my mails
I have the following error:
Cannot append message to mbox
file: /home/profs/user1/.evolution/mail/local/Inbox: Permission denied

Excessive file traffic when viewing Printer Properties with 3.0.11
List,
I have a printer on a BDC at the other end of a VPN tunnel, and
updating the printer properties (such as loading additional driver
files or configuring the paper size) of a printer that is installed on
it is very slow, on the order of half an hour for basic operations.
Just opening the properties dialog box results in all the driver files
for the printer being read. Many times. Very slowly.

Changing printer properties caused infinite loop (samba-2.2.7, cups-1.1.16, Solaris 2.8)
Hi,
we have a samba printserver 2.2.7 with cups 1.1.16 with about 15 HP
Printers.
The samba server runs under Solaris 2.8 and is a member of a NT4
controlled domain.
Because of some problems setting the document defaults, I tried
cupsaddsmb with the Adobe PS driver.
The installation of the driver works fine, but some document defaults
(eg. download as softfont instead of substitute with

Sysvol: users - access denied
Hello,
I have a question regarding to access permissions.
Recently I have upgraded my DC from version 41.12 to 4.1.21. This weekend I
have decided to upgrade to 4.3.3.
I have noticed that my users weren't able to access the sysvol share after
the upgraded to 4.3.3.
As a test I have created a new user "test" and I was able to open the
sysvol share without any issues.
Next I have

Tracking down random server drops...
I've been fighting with a samba install on top of a amd64 Ubuntu 10.4 system
for a couple months now. I have a small flotilla of Windows systems running
anything from Win 2000 up through Windows Server 2008. All save for the
2008 systems are setup with nightly NTBackup jobs with my samba server as
the destination. The 2008 systems are running MS SQL and use the samba
server as the

MS Office files on NT client
Samba has worked well for several years - upgraded to 2.2 with Suse 7.2 6
months ago all well and happy.
An NT client - logged on as Administrator - that was working with Samba for
over a year had its share changed from one user to another - using clear
text passwords, the machine was also tidied up. It connects to Samba with
the new user's log on and password and NT explorer sees the shares

FlashMX creates BAD .swf file on Samba
Hi peoples,
I have a Samba Server that has had the same config for over 10 months now
(read: never had a problem).
Just today, I thought, let's Play with Flash MX, so download I did.
Start playing around, and went to test my first movie and it came up blank.
Not a flash GURU that I am, I was stumped. Anyway. Saved the flash file
to my local C:\ (Oh did I mention the WS is Win2k ;) .. and

Fw: MS Office files on NT client
No one replied to me .....
But, in case anyone like me searches archives in vain for this problem,
the answer is turn off oplocks on the share that the NT client wishes to
save Office files to.
Don't really understand why this resolves the snag and I guess the
performance will take a theoretical hit. But with 20 client machines on a
100Meg LAN this is not really a problem.

Problem with 'homes' share
I am using samba3 on centos5 and have a problem with the 'homes' share. I
have existing Linux home directories. When I access the samba server from
the windows terminal server (via \\servername) I see 2 shares, backup and
mikeg (my username). The mikeg share takes me to my Linux home directory so
all seems well. The problem I have is that any file I try to open opens
read only. I did
