Samba vs. Firewall and/or SELinux
Hi all.
I created a smb-share on my el6 for all windows-pcs in my
home-network (I'm the only Linux-User in my family) for sharing all the
stuff we have, like music and videos and documents. The share will be
shown on the other pcs (Windows XP), but they can't open it. The
error-message ist "Share not found" on our preferred language of course!

SWAT: please help
Hello all:
Here's the problem [on a RH7 running kernel 2.2.17-14 with
Samba 2.0.7-21ssl and xinetd-2.1.8.9pre14]:
http://localhost:901 does bring up the SWAT login dialog
box.. but upon entering root as the user, followed by my
root passwd in the next entry... it tells me "Authentication
failed. Retry?" I can tell you that I did enter the correct
root passwd, because I am root

Why is an extra 'home' dir showing up?
My question is, how come daevid (on XP) sees the following directories:
\\linux\dae51d
\\linux\homes
Shouldn't there just be the home dir only? Why does "\\linux\dae51d"
show up (I assume it's b/c that's who I am logged in as on XP which maps
to linux)? However, the fact that it does show up, shouldn't it be the
actual HOME directory of the linux user account dae51d (as

How do I create a globally accessible directory [partly solved] (XP works/98 doesn't)
I just want a simple, globally accessible directory for anyone on my
LAN. I don't care who they are, who they're logged in as on their
windows machine, I don't care about security (it's my own private
LAN!!!). Why is this so difficult to do? I've looked through the
archives (which by the way, could someone spend a few minutes and put a
SEARCH feature there. Following threads

Trouble Renaming Computer
Hi,
i've just migrated from nt4 to samba 3.0.10-1.4E.9 with tdbsam, running
on Centos 4.4
The net rpc vampire went fairly smoothly.
Now that samba is running as the PDC (nt4 machine has been laid to rest)
i am having trouble renaming computers in the domain.
If i try this from the windows workstation (XP Professional) i get
access denied. I use "root" or administrator which is

Samba + username with spaces_
How does samba handle NT usernames
that contains spaces. Also NT can
have long usernames while Linux can
only have 8-10 character long usernames.
Is there anyway you can map those long
usernames to Linux?
Thanks

username maps and security=ads
I have been having problems with username maps and security=ads.
I now have a solution (or at least a work around) that is working
for me. I sort of stumbled across it, as I don't recall reading
any samba docs that mentions the need to have the realm name
in the smbuser file.
Samba server is RHEL3 with samba-3.0.20 compiled from source
authenticating against a windows ADS.

Samba 3.0.4 PDC w/ LDAP - XP client
Hello,
I am currently trying to set up my Samba 3.0.4 testbox to be a PDC for
a MS Windows XP Pro SP1 box.
I am using the latest smbldap-tools from IDEALX and I have really
REALLY tried to do things right. Followed their manual...
I cleaned my setup three times today and started from scratch ...
Managed to join my DOMAIN yesterday but right now no chance.

Looking for successful implementation of Samba + W2K3 AD
Dear Samba users,
I am desperate to know whether there is any successful implementation of
Samba 3.0.x as member server of Microsoft Windows 2003 server running
Active Directory.
I have in production the said architecture and it is giving me all sort of
connection problems to SAMBA shares during peak hours when users are
numbered as many as 500+ concurrently. When there are only few users,

How does the "guest account" param work?
smb.conf states "This user must exist in the passwd file, but does not
require a valid login"
What exactly does this mean? As I understand it, adding a user with
'smbpasswd -a nobody' automatically gives it a valid login.
My reasons for asking are;
I added myself to passdb.tdb with my passwd.
I added the 'nobody' user to passdb.tdb with no passwd.
I then logged in to

cached credentials local login -- notebook domain members
Hallo,
I wonder if cached credentials local logins are expected to work with samba.
I have users with notebooks that I want to be domain members.
If the notebook is in the wild I want the users to use their profiles
(either local or roaming) stored on the notebooks.
But once disconnected from the network the users can't login.

A few questions
1. There is no Domain Users group on my Samba 3.0.6 server. Does this
group need to be manually created?
2. In my smbpasswd file:
# Unix_name = SMB_name1 SMB_name
root = Administrator
nobody = guest pcguest smbguest
I can not join a domain using administrator. I must use root. What did I
do wrong?

the admin group on the

Access to shares is denied after upgrading from 3.6.3 (openSUSE 12.1) to 4.1.17 (openSUSE 13.2)
Hi,
please have a look into the attached smb.conf. The only changes since 3.6.3 are commenting out all *security* settings and adding
winbind expand groups = 1
The attached smbusers hasn't been changed yet.

One account can access samba, another can't.
My wife and I each have our own workstation dual-booting WinXP and
Gentoo Linux. We also have a third which runs Gentoo all the time. I
wanted to set up samba on the third box and provide some extra storage
space for both our Windows installs. It worked for a few days, then all
of a sudden it stopped letting my account (michael) in while still
letting my wife's account (amy) use the share.

Problems with winbind, idmap and usrmgr.exe
I am trying to get two Samba PDC/Domains setup with a trust between
them. They are separate domains because they are separate companies
(one is a subsidiary of the other) located in different cites.
I am using Centos 5.1 x86_64 and Samba 3.0.28a packages built by me from
Fedora 8 source RPMs.
Based on what I have read, in order to do the trust thing I need to use

Joining a Windows XP pc to Samba / LDAP domain
Hi, guys,
I'm trying to create a PDC using Samba with an LDAP backend. According
to all the guides I read, this should be fairly easy really, but I've
done nothing else for the last week and it still doesn't work the way
the manual says it should! As far as I can see, everything is set up and
working correctly right up to the point when I try and join a machine to
the domain.

Wine and Windows 2000
I had the latest wine running under winblows 98 SE for a week or two with no
problems, then I installed winblows 2000 and now I cannot get wine to work.
It is important for me to get it running again since I run United Devices
cancer research agent (http://members.ud.com) 24/7 to help them find a cure
for cancer. Is wine compatible with Win2k, or will I need to re-install 98
again?
