administering an MS Windows partition under Linux
Hi all, If I have a dual-boot machine (Linux and Windows) would I have any good tools under Linux that would allow me to look at the content of the Windows boot partition, administer it, clean up the registry, remove viruses if any, etc? The Windows installation seems to be so defective as to be quite useless so I am trying to think of a good strategy for dealing with the situation. Thanks in

Administering samba locally without opening root to the net?
Hello. I'm trying to find a way to administer a (set of) standalone samba machines (3.x style) locally. Most things are now done using `net rpc' command. But this one connects to a (local) samba server over network, and hence requires auth. Another example is pdbedit tool which accesses local passdb.tdb file directly as long as user running this command has the necessary permissions.

Win 2000 and Samba
I administer an NT network. My boss administers the Unix side. He runs a box that runs Samba. Our NT users have a share on the Samba box that is mapped by their NT profile. It contains their profile and personal file storage. We are planning a move to Windows 2000. It will be in native mode (no NT boxes, no WINS, no netbios). Can Samba handle authentication with Win 2000? What version of Samba

Administering SWAT using userid's other than root...
Hi all... Has anyone got SWAT administration working from other userid's other than root? I've got a rh6.2 box running Samba 2.0.7. I have myself (wkim) in the "domain admin users" and the "admin users". Both the smb.conf file and the swat binarary are owned by root:swat. I'm a part of group "swat". (I'm also a part of group "root" just to

DNS and DHCP setup
Hi, Does anyone know of a document that gives details on how to set up Bind 9 and DHCPD 3.x so that dns is updated when clients log on? I saw this is not in the howto collection (http://www.bibsyst.no/samba/docs/man/DNSDHCP.html#id2981727) so I was kind of hoping someone else has some notes. I would be greatfull for any tips and links. Tarjei

copying from Win to Linux
Hi, I'm about to migrate a lot of files from a windows server to a new, shiny samba-server. I just got a small problem : What is the best way to do this? I'e tried rsync, but it croaks on some files with names like "somethign :some.eml" the same does cp. What I'm wondering about, is has anyone else had these problems, and if so, how did you solve them? Do you have a

AD administrator can't administer
Over time I have ignored the fact that my AD administrator has stopped being able to administer. For example, the Ad administrator cannot install drivers or updates. Once a week now, I logout as workstation user and login as the "local administrator" to install drivers or run windows updates (in today's case a printer driver on the workstation.) Does this falls into that "gray

Outlook .pst files on Samba PDC
Occasional problems arise where the .pst file just will not copy from the users profile on the server. Doesn't seem to be related to the file size. Has anyone had issues with outlook and Samba PDC - (win2k clients). Solutions that have worked have ranged from complete loss of the .pst file to restarting users profile from scratch. thanks Alex Genna

Xen HVMs run VERY slowly on SAN box
We are running a 2-node cluster with Debian Squeeze (2.6.32-5-xen-amd64) and Xen 4.0.1 on the dom0 and Ubuntu lucid domUs. We are now using fully virtualized (HVM) vms. In our configuration the dom0 administers to domUs created and run on a SAN box accessed via private network (192.168...). A sample configuration file is pasted below. We have had little or no IO problem with HVMs created and

Bridging app
Hi All- I am trying to create a post call survey application. I would like to: 1. ask the caller if they want to take a survey after their call completes 2. If no, just transfer the call 3. if yes, 4. bridge up another extension 5. wait for that extension to hang-up 6. have the system (not the user) transfer the call to different extension that administers an IVR based survey. Anyone

Question regarding guest account =
Hi, I experiemented a bit with the guest account parameter the other day, and I some questions: a) It seems to me that if you turn this parameter on, the user will be used when someone browses the domain without beeing a domain member, is this a true observation? (Don't answer this one, I checked the manual and it said yes). b) It also seems that the guestuser must have a sambaSid that

administering permissions via Windows 2003 Server
Hi, We have a Linux Release 9 FIle Server with which we are having major problems controlling file permissions. Even though a directory may have 777 permisions when any attempt to change/add permissions on this directory (via computer management by admin in Server 2003) this just results in 'access denied' message even though we have full ownership. We also have a WIndows 2000 terminal

Problem Administering Permissions on Samba Server
I have a Samba-3 server on a Linux Fedora server configured as a member server on a Windows NT domain. Winbind works great. I can do a getent group or getent passwd and it will list the users and groups of the domain. I can also set permissions on the Samba shares on the Linux server using chmod or chown etc. I have the Official Samba-3 HOWTO and Referencd Guide. The HOWTO Guide says you should
