Samba share of a NFS mount
I've got a NFS directory that's shared among my RHEL5 servers that I'd like
to give access to a couple of Win2K servers, also. The easiest way to do so
is to NFS mount the directory on my Samba server, and export the directory
as a Samba share.
It works. Kind of. But it redefines 'slow'.
Copying the file from a normal Samba share takes under 10 seconds on a slow
network:

Samba 4.11.6 cannot JOIN - 'Could not find machine account'

When I run samba-tool like this without specifying the server, it chooses the older backup
server that runs Server 2008 (named PE2600).
Joining to this server results in a different error:

Re: specified network name no more available
I was stung by this bug yesterday myself and although
there are numerous references to this error message
I haven't seen any qualified resolution of the problem.
Not that the following rant hopes to be such, but it's
a good story.
My setup is a stable 2.2.8a production domain and an
experimental 3.0.2a-SuSE domain. The passwd backend is
still smbpasswd. I wish there were a better

Any advice for installing Samba as an AD server on Raspbian Buster with BIND9 and ISC DHCP?
Sorry about the HTML in the last email - I'm attempting to resend
(with fingers crossed that my mailer doesn't throw in a bunch of HTML this time...)

I've taken the good suggestions and made some progress getting a bind-dhcp-samba server
running on the Pi with Raspbian Buster.

Re: Still trying to backup 66 GB from LINUX to W2K
But there's a little rub - the redirection on W2K side
introduces a carriage-return character before each
line-feed, like ftp in ascii mode. Sorry about that.
Even the cygWin filter "dd" can't help it.

Re: Still trying to backup 66 GB from LINUX to W2K
Both "rexec.exe" and "rsh.exe" from W2K have the problem.
However, the "rsh.exe" from Hummingbird's Exceed
package works just fine. I copied it into my cygWin's
/usr/bin directory and did
cd /cygdrive/c/temp
time rsh p92 "cd /local;tar cbf 64 - SAS" | dd of=here.tar
and the file is OK. It tars out all the files in SAS
directory.

Win2K Profiles and a Samba PDC.
We're a Solaris/Linux shop, trying to migrate the last vestiges of our
NT domain over to Samba. We've got a few users using Windows 20000
workstations, and for some odd reason can't get them to join the domain
with local profiles. The Winboxen always try to create roaming profiles
on the PDC (which we don't want), and there's no way to force a local
profile, other than

can't browse across subnets
Hi folks -
I'm having an issue here.
I have my samba server sitting on one subnet, and the rest of the clients
sitting on another (due to IP administration reasons).
I assign both my clients and the server to the same workgroup, but
the winboxen clients can't browse to the samba server.
The win clients all have WINS resolution turned on, and I specified
all of my WINS servers in

Incoming rsync connection attempts
Greetings -
In my logwatch report this morning I noticed reference to an attempt to
connect to rsync from an external IP address. It doesn't appear that
the connection was successful based on correlating information between
/var/log/secure and /var/log/messages. But I am looking for some
suggestions for implementing more preventative measures, if necessary.

netlogon runas Administrator problem solved
Hi Sambatistas,
a few days ago there was a discussion, how to force
jobs runas administrator at netlogon.
If you use a default.bat at netlogon this is executed
as the logon user , therefor you are running in rights problems
if you wanna execute job which need admin right like regedit /s .
I found myself in this problem too, pushing
the user to use the logon screensaver as default,
i created a reg

Linux 2.2.0 and Samba client not happening for me
Dudes and/or Dudettes:
HEEELLLPPP! (such a newbie statement)
I can't get my remote SMB mounts to work on my Linux box.
duke was happily running Slackware Linux 2.0.36 and Samba 1.9.18p8 .
I upgraded to Linux 2.2.0pre9 (2.2.0final), which seemed to require
upgrading to Samba 2.0.0 . (I don't remember the exact errors)
Now i can't get my NT and '95 disks to stay mounted on

Windows 2003 AD/Kerberos Ticket error
I'm attempting to configure Samba 3.0.4 to work with Windows 2003 Active
Directory, mapping users' home directories automatically. Currently we
use this method in production with Windows 2000 but wish to migrate to
2003. The problem seems to be Kerberos related. I was able to join the
Linux box (RedHat 9) to the AD. I can do a "kinit <username>"
successfully. Klist shows a

Frustrated...Samba on linux w/xfs SLOW problem
I have a very simple setup here that I have recently made some
modifications to and it has affected my ability to save files to the
linux samba server.
The recent changes are: converted all fs's to xfs from ext3.
Upgraded to latest kernel 2.6.7 from a 2.4 kernel.
Samba used to work fine. Now, I can copy files out of my linux samba
server to my windows machine at full speed. However, when

Slightly OT: Centos KVM Host/Guest functions and LVM considerations
Greetings -
I will be getting a new server for my company in the next few months and am
trying to get a better understanding of some of the basic theoretical
approaches to using Centos KVM on a server. I have found plenty of things
to read that discuss how to install KVM on the host and how to install a
guest and setup the network bridge, and all the other rudimentary tasks.
But all of

Dovecot 1.2.12 + Postfix + virtual domains: delivering to system users
As mentioned in my previous posting, I've set up a mailserver for a domain of
Winboxen, authenticated through Active Directory. After some struggles, I
finally got that working. But I also need to receive emails for a few system
users on the mailserver (like postmaster, and a couple of accounts set up
for maintaining the system).
I thought, based on the way I read the documentation,

Authenticating off a Windows 2003 ADS DC with Samba/Winbind
[originally posted to fedora-users]
I'm having difficulty getting samba/winbind to authenticate of a W2K3
box. I've searched the list archives and although there
are some similar problems, none have seemed to help resolve this one.
Here's the network configuration:
- Windows 2003 Server gx270-rmaniar [192.168.0.100]
- Fedora Core 3 gx280rmaniarFC3 [192.168.0.5]
